Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

I thought teams had to have a players rights in order to invite them to camp. Also, the Sabres haven't released their camp roster yet. The only source I found to support this is Tyler's twitter.

Not true. Mike Collins of Merrimack is headed to Minnesota Wild camp. Quite a few college players who are undrafted go to D camps. They just have to pay their way to avoid losing amateur status. Same goes for drafted players too.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

Correct...Will Merchant went to Minnesota Wild's rookie summer camp last year as a free agent invitee.

Sabres won't officially release the roster for the camp early next week. NHL teams usually take a hometown/player(s) that played junior or college hockey in the area to the summer camp. With Michael Peca as Gjurich's coach this year, strong connections with the Sabres.

Good to know. Thanks for clarifying!

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

Nolan Vesey, the brother of current Harvard foward Jimmy Vesey - has committed to Maine. He had 18 goals and 13 assists for Austin Prep (Mass) last year. Drafted by Dubuque in May.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

Yup 2014 or 2015. He will play with the South Shore Kings of the newly formed USPHL (basically replacing the EJHL) this year. He was one of the top uncommitted kids in New England so Gendron snapped him up in a 1-2 month period after other schools nearly had ten months recruiting him.

Looks like Red & Co are quite the salesmen. Next we'll hear Red is selling refridgeration units to the Inuits.

Gendron lands Maine’s first top recruit
By Nathan Fournier Published: 16th July 2013
LEWISTON – Nolan Vesey didn’t begin to receive college interest until last fall while playing major midget for the Neponset Valley River Rats.

It wasn’t until Dennis “Red” Gendron took over as the new head coach of the University of Maine and the new coaching staff was put into place that the Black Bears entered the picture. After winning the Massachusetts Major Midget Championship, USA Hockey’s U-18 Tier I National Title with the River Rats and making it to the Massachusetts Division 1A Super 8 Championship with Austin Prep over the last year, Vessey capped it off Monday night by committing to Maine for the fall of 2014 or ’15.

Nice to have two journalists providing information about Maine hockey. Thanks.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

According to USHR, 2014 University of Maine recruit Ryan Cloonan has decommitted from the school.

Just texted Ryan and he has confirmed that report.

any reason given? coaching change, gendron tell him not to expect much playing time, etc.? i know he was 14 or 15 when he committed...

I think it is a numbers deal. At one time Maine had like five forwards committed for 2014 and there are only two seniors. I think we'll see one more de-committ, especially with Vesey on board.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

Bottom line: how would you describe the trade (Cloonan out, Vesey in)?

Without knowing anything more, it seems to me Maine is still ahead of where they were a week ago - even if not by as much. I guess I just like Vesey's size.
