Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

Story on new Maine commit Patrick Holway

Couldn't get in contact with Boston Advantage coaches, but did get some quotes from Holway's high school lacrosse coach who praised his athleticism, size and character.

I really like the sounds of this kid. I think Red and Co have done a good job so far of getting guys who might be a bit below the radar but will wind up being decent college players. For a team like Maine that is what it is going to take.

It would be interesting to hear more about what you have heard on this year's frosh class.

I've seen Nolan Vesey play numerous times in HS, summer and USPHL. He's good, has some skill, but not as willing to go to the net as his older brother. His dad is Merrimack's all-time leading scorer, played briefly in NHL. Brother picked by Nashville 2nd rd so there are some good bloodlines. As of now he's more of a perimeter player, but he's got some moves.

Liam Pecararo is small, but very crafty. He can really dangle. He's not going to out-physical opposing defensemen, but he'll bounce around from side-to-side and make some D look silly. I've only seen him live a couple times, seen him on FAST Hockey (stream) a few more times.

Malcolm Hayes and Mark Hamilton are similar players. Both are big, strong, physical defensemen. My personal opinion is Hamilton is more refined, but Hayes has more upside and has potential to really blossom under the tutelage of Leach and Gendron. I've only seen Hayes a few times, but I've heard good things about him from guys on campus right now who've seen him in informal on-ice workouts. I've watched Hamilton a few more times in prep and high school. He's steady, solid, nothing flashy.

I haven't seen enough of the other guys to really comment, but I'd say the four above-mentioned players are head-and-shoulders above the other rookies. Lacroix could add some physicality, be a good 4th line grinder from what I've heard. Musil is a shot in the dark in my opinion. If he works out great, if he doesn't, no scholarship $ wasted. Romeo had some potential when he was younger, but I think Morris will need to play 60% of the games to really give Maine a fighting chance.

Although not considered a incoming recruit, look for Nik Nugnes to make a pitch at playing time between the pipes for Maine this season...along with Morris.

Anyone know anything about Maine's new recruit Justin Rai of the Prince George Spruce Kings of the BCHL?

It looks like he is off to a flyer this year, seven goals in five games. I believe he would be Maine's first Indian(not Native American) player. He might be a bit of a late bloomer.

HockeyDB shows him with 10-6-16 in 10 games. 5-10, 165lbs. He would be 21 when he arrives at Maine (June 1994 birthdate). 25-28-53 in 57 games last year for the Spruce Kings last year and 11-14-25 in 40 games the year before that.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

Glad to see we're tapping back into the Western Canadian recruiting pipeline. Pretty nice get for Red and Leach

Oliver Wahlstrom update:

Playing for Shattuck St. Mary's Bantam team:

12 GP: 16 G, 13 A

http://ssmhockey.org/2009-2010-boys-bantam-tier-i-stats/

Guess he's going OK for himself.;)

Also.....more info. on Jake Pappalardo:

Outstanding Oliver. A true gem for Maine hockey.

I also like that Rai is a big PKariya fan, wears #9, and says it is a dream come true to play for Maine. Sounds awesome.

I can only imagine this will attract more attention and top recruits to Maine.

Also, I noticed Joe Widmar is doing well on his USHL team thus far(7 games, 3 goals, 3 assists, +7)

http://www.pointstreak.com/prostats/teamplayerstats.html?teamid=3133&seasonid=12983

From word of mouth the mass HS recruits(Shea, Holway, and Pappalardo) are all very solid.

Sounds like Maine is on the uptick, but hard to prove it given the disappointing results over these first 4 games.

I am thinking the schedule has been brutal on the players. And I am guessing they'll be "out for bear" this weekend.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

This was all Guite.

I think he will be very good at recruiting. And given what we see about the type of player Gendron wants... what better example than Guite. Power forward with a capital P, drive hard, door stepper, hard to the net, hammer D in the corners. Guite was a horse.

http://overtheboards.net/maine-adds-proctor-97-scorer-jake-pappalardo/

The Salem, New Hampshire native is a skilled forward who plays an up-tempo game with strong skating and the ability to capitalize on his opportunities. Following this summer’s Beantown Classic Pro Division, we wrote this:

“97 F Jake Pappalardo – Proctor Academy – Uncommitted

Height: 5’10, Weight: 185

Had a stellar week here for a young player. Pesky forward, very good offensively with good speed, throws quick dangerous wristers at the net and smart without the puck – puts himself in situations to succeed and re-engage.”

A potential sleeper for the NHL draft this summer, after leading Proctor in scoring this past year, the Black Bears newest recruit will look to take his game to the next level as a dominant force in prep. He’s likely to arrive by 2017.

Pappalardo has some teammates who will likely be key targets this winter. Forward Hunter Luhmann is attracting a lot of attention, while 1999-born defenders Reilly Walsh and Matt Slick both look to be key names in the seven-team Lakes Region conference this season.
