Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

I think all of us here support the team. Sometimes we place too, much fault on the players when it should be directed more at the coaching staff. After all ,these are college students who are here to receive an education and play hockey. Not necessarily in that order.;) It's just that most Maine Hockey fans are passionate and need to vent after being subjected to this continuing downward spiral. I still have season tickets and I support the team (for now).

You just got to love Maine fans!

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

That guy coaching at Union, where was he an assistant again? ;)

And how does he, with no scholarships, outcoach two-time Penrose nominee(and one winner) TIMMAY Whitehead? And how does his team, with no scholarship players, outmuscle and outhustle the UMaine team?

Wow, if only we could get coaches like that guy. Where do you find guys like that?

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

yoh...Whitehead. Any idea why the players aren't ready to play the first period? Any guesses ???

Looks like its going to be the "were young" excuse again this year from Whitehead.

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Unbelievable. As if last weekend's performance wasn't bad enough, today's story in the BDN just makes you sick. My take on the weekend is that the guys just didn't show up. They played a period or two of decent hockey and took the rest of the weekend off -- the story of the program under Whitehead. Unfortunately, there's no world class goaltender there anymore to bail them out.

If you can't get a young team motivated to play on the opening weekend, when players should be looking to set a tone and fighting for ice time, then when exactly do you expect them to be motivated? Recognzing he publically admitted the lack of effort (for which there is no excuse), Whitehead is now backtracking and blaming the performance on youth and lack of depth. I could accept that argument if they played BU last weekend. But, they played a team that they could have beaten -- at least competed strongly against. Whitehead is just depressing. He sounds like Eeyore most of the time. Even worse, he clearly has a chip on his shoulder. It's no surprise why he can't motivate his team.

I have stopped reading the coach's comments in the BDN. I still enjoy reading information about the team, though. Same old excuses. It's really pathetic. Now, he has thrown in a new one. The players don't know the system. Please. Too, bad about Mark Nemec (broken thumb). He is a good kid and a good student.

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Count the excuses in today's BDN article:

"Maine coach Tim Whitehead had 13 freshmen and sophomores in his lineup each night and said that explained some of the problems, including the tentative first-period play.

“Unfortunately, we’re going through a transition period here,” said Whitehead. “We have a very young team and it takes time for guys to develop chemistry and learn how to execute our systems.

“The bottom line is that the players aren’t comfortable with the systems yet,” added Whitehead. “We’ve had only five or six practices. When you aren’t sure where you’re supposed to be, you’re going to be hesitant. Once they get the systems down, we’ll have a better team than last year.”

Here is my count. Everyone's count could be different as some excuses could be lumped together:

1. 13 freshmen and sophomores in his lineup
2. tentative first-period play
3. going through a transition period here
4. takes time for guys to develop chemistry
5. learn how to execute our systems
6. had only five or six practices

Can anyone name any coach in any sport who can come up with as many excuses as Whitehead? Has he ever said "I was out-coached" or "My game plan did not work." How can he preach responsibility to his players when he never takes any himself?

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

1 sounds almost like there's a smirk or rimshot missing (attempt at dry humor). 13 is 1/2 of a typical roster, right?

Phercrissakes.....doesnt every gd coach in the country deal with items 3 through 6 on an equal basis?

Timid Tim is grating on my nerves.

If MSU starts embarrassing this Maine team this weekend, I wanna hear the boobirds in the crowd. Time to tell Timmay we've had enuf of his bs. Having said that, I do expect the players to respond to last weekends debacle in better fashion....but, you never know with Tim in charge what will happen or I should say, not happen

Just for the record. I counted 18 freshman and sophomores on the MSU roster....not that that would prevent Timmay from still using the "were so young" excuse if Maine gets blown out this weeknd.

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

“There’s no doubt Dave can bounce back and help the team.”

I would think there is a lot of doubt.

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Didn't Timmy's Lowell teams always have a ridiculous imbalance between classes?

Wasn't there a year where he had something like 15 seniors and everyone in the league thought they were going to dominate?

I think Whitehead is just in self preservation mode. He's got to know that his days are numbered. Maine is the best gig he will ever have. Short of a DII coaching job, he'll be back on the pro scouting circuit, which is where he was before Maine picked him up. The bottom line is Maine will have to force him out. He won't leave on his own. Too bad. He's a nice guy, but he's in way over his head.

Amen to all of that! (except I'm beginning to think that he's not even a nice guy)

Funny how UMaine used to be a place that developed young coaches and then saw them move on to greener pastures after they had success in Orono. Boy, those days are LONG GONE! I hope all of those fans that wanted "lifers" at UMaine are happy now!! We have top-of-the-line coaches now in Whitehead, Cosgrove, and Woodward.

It comes down to this........bad recruiting + bad coaching = Maine Hockey.
