Maine @ Michigan State (10/14-15)

Re: Maine @ Michigan State (10/14-15)

Spartans played great defense tonight and deserved the win. Congratulations...

Was it defense or goal tending? As we all speculated in the offseason, Maine's goal tending is the determining factor for success. The goal tending corps will have to develop as the season progresses if Maine is going to make it to the post season.

I wouldn't blame Sirman for Thursday's effort. He was fully screened on one goal, not even a wave. On the shorty, the defenseman didn't take away the pass and left him out to dry. He was at least a partially, if not fully, screened on another goal.

Tonight, Sullivan was shaky. He may have been partially screened on the first two, not sure. But he waved at the game winner as it went by. There was more than one odd man rush tonight, the back checkers were more interested in taking away the shot. That shows a lack of confidence in their tenders. If they don't learn to trust them, it's going to be a long season. We need you all to do well from here on out, learn them some confidence, the tenders aren't that bad.

I thought Maine's tenders did an adequate job considering it was their first college game experience for the most part. They certainly didnt steal anything. I think it was the second goal last night from the high slot that came at the goalie right from the defenders legs. You could see it in replay. Tough one for a goalie to pick up. Overall, I didnt see a Jimmy Howard out there, but I'm optimistic that Sirman and Sullivan will get the job done this year. Good experience for them in a hostile environment to start the season.

MSU's got a nice young team there....big, quick and solid goaltending. They certainly played well this weekend and should do just fine in the CCHA.

Right now the Goaltending is still the Question-Mark and the Penalty kill is awful...but the biggest problem of all is what team will show up each night...the team that works all game long or the team that shows up and figures to just flip the switch when needed to pump in a few goals and play 10 minutes of hockey..?

Re: Maine @ Michigan State (10/14-15)

the officials did not necessarily see anything done by Diamond. they called as many or more phantom calls against MSU.

I should amend that, the ONE ref called all of the calls, just like Ritchie did up at Orono a week ago.
I do not know why they have 2 refs if only one of them is going to call everything, no matter how close it is to the other ref.

also, goaltender interference is supposed to be when diamond is in the crease and interfering with a goaltender making a save, not just having a Hamilton in the crease. bad call.

(one Hamilton of course being the unit of measure, known to Maine fans, as a miniscule amount of a skate touching the paint outlining the crease... the rule was changed because of the size and effect of one Hamilton)
