I have to agree. Red's recruits look bottom-feeder fare.

Recruiting woes were my main complaint under Tim, and it appears to be getting worse under Red.

I fear Red inherited much worse of a train wreck than has ever been admitted or suspected. We will never know. As one would expect, he has never ever said a word about what he took over. He inherited the other guy's players, recruits, a depleted fan base, poor season ticket sales, and a declining financial picture for Maine Hockey. So yes, there's a tremendous weight on his shoulders. To be accurate, he's really had one recruiting class one could call his, this past season's. All the Freshmen from this season were Red recruits except Peccararo. Give the guy two recruiting classes before you call the kids bottom feeder picks. In comparison, I don't think Bazin, Leaman or especially Montgomery inherited anything of a mess like Gendron has. Look, I'm unhappy and dissatisfied with the performance of the 2014-15 team. I give them a C+ at best. But give the guy two recruiting classes, maybe three.

Totally agree with this assessment! I think Cedric Lacroix this year was typical of the kinds of players he wants. Defensively responsible, physical and can chip in on offense. Hayes could become another. However we need the Vesey's and Peccararo's to find the back of the net! Byron, Brown, Morgan, along with the two freshmen mentioned will need to step it up on offense. "IF" we can roll 3 solid lines that play strong two-way hockey I think we will be okay without a Shore or Hutton, but while scoring was an issue last year, so was zone coverage in the D zone. Red does need 3 years of his recruits before a full judgement can be made.

Looking forward to being in the Garden this weekend and counting all the Maine Jerseys! Hope I don't have to wait too long until the jerseys with Maine on them are on the ice and not in the stands!

Year three, Walsh was playing BC in the Garden for a HE championship. This is year three for Red. Where do you expect to see this team?

It was also a different time. There were fewer schools trying to compete in those days. Other than UMass, every school in the league is pouring resources into hockey these days that are at least in the conversation of being equal to Maine's. Maine in the early 80's decided it would become a national power in hockey and put in the financial commitment to do so. The goal these days seems more akin to "keep the lights on," as it is with everything in the UMaine system.

It's over. Lower your expectations to "an NCAA appearance once every five years and we will see from there."

No chit. But Leamon seems to be pretty similar. Would have made a pretty good hire back around 2009-2010. Quinn too. Maybe even Corkum, who knows? Probably quite a few others out there as well. Just gotta know where to look for them.

But better to play it safe and hire the established old school old guy.

I don't disagree but it isn't Reds fault Maine waited to long. Heck they should have had a Natl search once the 01-02 season ended and I said that on here at the time along with several others. I don't know if Red is the guy but let him get his guys in there and then we'll see. Its possible its already too late????

First thing is, the program needs money, so he is out amongst the people trying to raise it. Second, whenever I've talked him he seems genuine to me but....

No one believes me when I say it, but I think Maine should start paying players. The kids deserve it, they are the ones risking injury, and winning is fun. Who cares if the wins get vacated later? Doesn't mean it didn't happen and wasn't fun in the meantime.

Very surprised by this comment. If one has ever spent 5 minutes or more with Red, and you don't think he's genuine, the compass needs recalibrating. He's as direct, unpretentious and "Red" as he can be. He is who he is. And he sure as heck ain't trying to be anyone else.

Given how toothless the NCAA has become (no action against UNC, Miami; not vacating wins at Georgia; restoring wins of a man who covered for a pedophile) Maine just might get away with it this time.

Just to make it clear to all of the above...no disrespect towards Gendron...have been around him and feel his Passion for the Program and Hockey...my feelings are at times he comes out the way Walsh might have,but we all know that Walsh knew when to push the Buttons to his advantage...100% behind Gendron and with that said he has a load of a task still ahead of him...this season imo was a step backwards and the next 2 seasons/recruiting classes will tell the tale if this Program has what it takes to make the steps upwards...if I offended anyone it was not my intentions at all...sadly wanting to see this Program rebound but at times losing patience...ok good day to all.

At this point the only hope this program has is that Wahlstrom is as good as Eichel and he actually shows up.

I remember the whole deal a little differently than most posters seem to...

Monty had been convicted of a DWI, and then he was quoted as feeling injured to have been left-out of the interviewed by Maine.

(I don't have any idea if one thing had anything to do with the other, but I'm fairly confident that both are searchable facts. And it seems clear that Maine didn't want him.)

If I had a magic wand, I'd go back and hire Corkum. He had the pedigree, the relative youth and the fire. I can't imagine how Maine hockey could have been any worse right now if he'd been given a couple of years to right the ship, and I wouldn't be at at all surprised if it would have been a lot better.

Jim took the Denver job before anyone was interviewed at Maine because they wasted too much time. They named Bob as interim head coach and took their time. Abbott did talk to Jim about the program but did not interview him before Jim interviewed at Denver.

Jim took the Denver job before anyone was interviewed at Maine because they wasted too much time. They named Bob as interim head coach and took their time. Abbott did talk to Jim about the program but did not interview him before Jim interviewed at Denver.

Bottom Line was Denver knew it was time to offer the Deal with Montgomery on the fence...knowing he could very well have a chance at the Maine Job...BUT at the same time if he refused the Denver Deal and then have Maine NOT offer him a chance at a Interview and a good chance at the Job,then he's stuck with no Job and back to the USHL for another year until another opening would appear...he had to make a CHOICE for himself and his family...in the long run he had no choice but to take the Job. History now...
