Re: Maine Hockey 2014-15 Volume 2: Red's Revenge

Which ones have you seen play? What about their games was missing?

Haven't seen any of them in person, just not impressed by their numbers. And wasn't Maine's incoming class rated as the 9th in HEA somewhere?

As per usual when making those kinds of remarks, I hope I'm wrong. ..But I haven't been lately. :p

At mid-season Maine's Recruiting Class was rated 11th out 12 in Hockey East.

Well, that's even worse than I wanted to recall... This program is on the skids, clearly.

If Maine doesn't lower ticket prices drastically, the Alfond will be empty in a year or two, and Maine will have had squandered its very last chip.

They need to get people in the building, but they don't THINK...lowering prices and making it a incentive to have a season ticket is the way to go...once they start winning or if they start winning...people don't mind paying...winning makes all the difference in the world...not a very good Marketing Team @ UMaine.

i just read that Bill Buckner has been helping the BU goalies this season... any truth to that?

What they're worried about is dropping prices during the season and ticking off season ticket holders. I am a STH with the Columbus Blue Jackets (stop laughing) and have passed on several ideas to enhance the value for STH at Maine beyond just the price of the ticket. For example, a "tunnel of pride" the Blue Jackets have, where a set number of fans get to stand outside the locker room and high five the team as they take the ice. Doesn't cost the team a thing but it adds a tremendous amount for the fans - especially kids. Have a drawing where a few lucky winners have their season tickets delivered by Red or one of the captains. A pin to wear to games and events that identifies you as a STH and places like Pat's or the Governor's gives you a discount on game days. Things like that which won't impact revenue but makes having season tickets worth more than just the cost of going to the game. That frees them up to do "Family Night" or buy one get one free promotions during the season.

I have been told these ideas are being considered, which is nice, but I fear that what happens is ideas are considered and considered and considered but no one in charge ever gets around to implementing them.

If they want people in the seats...pins and high 5's are NOT going to do it...nope...drop the prices and start winning then think about revenue...don't know but I bet that season ticket sales drop again this year(5% maybe?).

Im a season ticket holder and I have no interest in high fives or having my tickets delivered by Red. I want to see a quality product and for a reasonable price. I'm tempted to give up my tickets which I have had since I graduated college. Games don't sell out and I have little interest in going to every game when 1) the team is awful and 2) I no longer live in Bangor.

Re: Maine Hockey 2014-15 Volume 2: Red's Revenge

Been to a ton of college venues, and I have never paid what Maine charges in any of them. The tariff simply doesn't match what the product is worth, which is why we see Maine (mostly) on the road anymore. An inferior item at an inflated price is just not going to work for much longer.

Well said. I think the fundamental problem Maine has is that there are so many single game tickets available and little discount on season tickets so there isn't much incentive for people to buy them. Last year was better but the schedule in recent times hasn't been overly exciting either. I can't imagine many people want to invest much money in seeing Maine play Canadian teams or American teams such as Bentley or AIC. Hopefully this is the year they bite the bullet and sell season tickets for something around $200 each. If they did this and kept prices for single game tickets the same I think they would see a huge boost in season tickets.

Also if you check around the rink...a good percentage of season ticket holders are the OLDER die-hards of the Walsh era...once they stop buying or give them up because of fixed incomes...who's left? Better start lower prices and getting the younger crowd involved, and I don't mean the Students...I mean fans that are out in the working world...get them to buy into a season ticket is better then just single tickets...will be a hard sell,Maine needs some Marketing know how...start looking over @ UML/Merrimack/Providence...in the last 4-5 years they have become better at selling there Program and Product...bottom line lower prices and a start winning/start improving will make somewhat of a difference...but Attendence will drop again this year...watch and see...single game sales will drop along with a percentage of season tickets that are not renewed...bite the bullet and put in a plan for say 2-3 years at a lower price and keep it in place to people that renew there season tickets...incentive to have that ticket is the way to go...not being done now with sadly a who gives a blank...well once you lose your Die-Hards,good luck filling the Building...

Really? My most recent Agganis stubs are for $28 and $30 and I've got one for $26 from UNH. What the heck are they charging in Orono these days?

The average of what I have for stubs from Lowell, Northeastern, Merrimack and Providence is around $15. Couple Mack playoff games were $20 plus arena fees.

Prices aren't the issue, it's the product on the ice. Win and they will come

IIRC the center ice seats with chair backs are $50 for games against UNH, BU, BC etc., and $40 against UMASS, NEU, etc. I think the ticket is actually $23, but there is an added "donation" - in quotes because it's not optional. These donation seats include the crappy obstructed view ones (IMO) behind the team benches. No wonder the arena always looks even emptier than it is during TV or stream and the camera pans by the benches.

In business, price drops are rarely the solution to an increase in revenues. I agree, the problem in filling seats lies with the product. If they produce a better product on the ice, people will come again like they once did, when there was a good product.

There are actually a fair number of season ticket holders in the first two rows behind the benches. The seats are awful, however, so most fans move up a few rows to empty seats, which hasn't been an issue.

Re: Maine Hockey 2014-15 Volume 2: Red's Revenge

If they're asking 40-50 bucks for a college hockey game that's a little nuts
