Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

Looks like Red is being pretty pro-active to set up events that capitalize on inherent rivalries, and will draw new fans and old to watch Maine hockey. First the Ice Breaker, and now this. Done more in three months to elevate the visibility of the program than his predecessor did in ten years.

I suspect the past coaching staff, athletic department and CCCC were responsible for securing the Ice Breaker Tournament.

Excerpt from a July 23, 2013 article by Larry Mahoney in the Bangor Daily News regarding the Ice Breaker Tournament:

First-year Maine coach Red Gendron said he was “very pleased” with the news and praised the school’s athletic administration for putting it together.

“They deserve the kudos. I can’t take any credit for it,” said Gendron.

“It’s great for our fans and alumni in the southern part of the state. I love Portland. It’s a great city to host an event like that in every way imaginable,” said Gendron. “I can remember going down there when I was an assistant at Maine [from 1990-93] and the building was full or nearly full and how enthusiastic they were about our team.

No, I imagine the NCAA has wanted to put the tournament in Portland for years but Whitehead kept saying no.

Because they had holes in the schedule. Maine's schedule is filling in nicely. 22 league games, 2 v UHN and the 2 Florida games every year. That leaves 8 NC games which is certainly more manageable than the 14 they were handed this year.
Also, Maine is listed as a future participant in the Liberty Hockey Invitational in Newark. If accurate, that would be two additional games in 2014 or 2016. It is not going to be 2015 as Maine will host the Icebreaker. That leaves only 6 games that season.

Thanks for verifying.

Jeez... Newark?

I drive past/through there all summer long. The traffic in North Jersey is absolutely brutal -the worst in the Nation- but the downtown area has been cleaned-up immeasurably, and the arena is nice. Lots of good places to stay and eat nearby.

Anything that enhances Maine's national profile is OK by me, but I'll plan on arriving there very, very, early.

Amen to that.

Now if they can do the same with Woodward for hoops...........

Worst in the nation? Have you driven in the SF Bay Area lately?

It's a tournament that kicks off this season held at the Prudential Center. When I bought my Devils tickets my agent told me that Maine was among the future invitees and STH get a nice discount on tickets. This year it is just ECAC teams but they will open it up starting next season. One of the things that made the Devils attractive to me is that the arena is 2 blocks from the train station. I am expecting them to be among the 2016 invitees, but t won't break my heart if they are there next season.

Maybe something like he was talking about could be separate? They have a dozen or so games to fill. I would like to see some OOC games against BU and BC as well. No clue why we're wasting time with UMA and UVM. Hopefully this coming season is just a one off.

One would have thought the Fenway games could have been OOC.

No, I haven't been to SF since I was 18, but I've read lately that North Jersey has more cars on the road per square mile than anywhere else in the country, including Greater LA.

I can't verify that, but I will say that you don't want to mess with the Garden State Parkway or the NJ Turnpike during peak times, or even later... We head south on the GSP most Sunday nights, and even at 10 PM, the northbound lanes (all 16 of them) are parking lots.

Makes rush-hour traffic on 128 around Boston look like a leisurely Sunday drive.

IceBreaker is exempt from the 34 game limit, so that shouldn't factor in to when they play in Newark.

No, but it would be unusual to play in the IceBreaker and then three weeks later be in yet another tournament.

Unusual yes, but I don't think you can just rule it out (especially with the IceBreaker exemption), they are just OOC games there isn't any additional burden on the team. BU played 3 different in season tournaments in 2008-09.

More or less unusual than playing non-conference games against UMass?

Also, how many tournaments did the 42-1-2 team play in? The Anaheim tournament, wasn't there one in Alaska and one at like Clarkson?

Way more unusual. We have played OOC games against BU, UHN and Lowell in the past, and have two scheduled vs UHN each of the next two seasons.

In 91-92 we played in three tournaments and 92-93 we played in four. Back then we hosted the Dexter Classic which was replaced by Maine co-hosting the Florida Tournament.
