That would be so cool on so many levels. Just having the Old Port there makes it such a natural for a terrific regional site. So much better than Woostah.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

As I tweeted, I've confirmed that recruits Zach Glienke, Blaine Byron, Josh Henke, Brian Morgan, Daniel Renouf, Eric Schurhamer, Tyler Gjurich and Cam Brown all will be in Orono for the three-week summer session that begins tomorrow. The only recruit I couldn't get confirmation on was Brady Campbell, but I believe he is still coming.

Edit: I've received confirmation from Elmira Director of Hockey Ops Keith Stewart that Brady Campbell will be at Maine so all recruits are confirmed.

For those who were looking for the country club attitude to be gone, I'm hearing it is

Well then, maybe we can return to good ole smash mouth in your face hockey again. Love it.

Not sure that I love it, myself...

The future of all contact sports might be in jeopardy as a result of all the concussion research that's available, even right now. (And I think it's going to get worse very soon.)

I'd prefer that Maine look for waterbugs, a la BC, and just skate circles around the opposition, instead of trying to go through them.

Well... Maine had a great scoring punch a couple years back and didn't get far. Nyquist, Abbott, Flynn, etc... They didn't skate through people. The difference is that the BC forwards are waterbugs but they also usually have decent size on their lines to compliment. They also are tenacious and usually even the smallest guy will try to run through someone. Diamond was an example of a BC type forward. And even though some of us would complain about his stupid penaties... most of us would take a roster stocked full of Diamonds.

In the past Maine always had a great combination of grit, speed, and size.

my $0.02

I'm not knocking Joey, but his numbers were spoon-fed to him by guys with better wheels and better hands. He didn't create his own shots very often, and he was absolutely not a York-era BC forward IMO.

True on Joey...not a York type forward. Even the undereducated Gerbil never hit anyone :)

I was tongue in cheek...you do hafta have a combination of speed, size and toughness I think to be successful. Not to mention decent net minders.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

I'll settle for getting back to the NCAA tournament on a somewhat regular basis. Whatever styles accomplishes that . . . I'm good with it.

Once the NCAAs are common enough that we can start to take them for granted again -- assuming Maine gets back to that point -- *then* I'll worry about style points. :)

It's been said by myself and others on this board in the past, but as a reminder, if that team had the goal tending Maine had this past season they would have been in the tournament.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

If that team had had good 'tending, they would have had a shot to win it all... Tim's latter-day teams always seemed to have a gaping hole or two somewhere.

If Gus had hit an empty net in Durham that team is in the tournament.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

Yup, though I bet Gus would bury that puck 99% of the time in do-overs. (And when that group did get in, it was the 'tending that let them down...)

Here's hoping for a more complete Maine team this season.

Yes on that goal, but also there should have been a tripping call assessed to the goaltender on that play, and as we all know there wasn't and UNH went the end of the ice and scored a tough angle soft goal...what turned out to be a Maine clinching win turned sour in just a few seconds of play.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

So since $$ is so tight at the U. Why don't they consider selling beer and wine at hockey games. If I'm not mistaken it up to the University as BU does it. That would generate 5,6,7 8K per game. If just 1/5 of the crowd bought just one beer that would be 5-6k.
