Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

OK, so you don't happen to know Grant Standbrook. Nothing wrong with that but if you did you wouldn't comment about his age as if it has slowed him down or was meaningful to his ability to contribute to the success of a hockey team. It may have slowed him down physically a little since he was a young man, but I'm a 56 year old who works out regularly and is in pretty good shape and am not embarrassed to say that in my wildest dreams know I couldn't keep up with him and I'm willing to bet neither can you. Really, he's one in a million amazing, and the only question is whether he can be persuaded to work with Red to help Maine hockey get back where it belongs. I wouldn't blame him if he didn't want to do it, but if he makes a commitment to the program, I have NO doubt that he will live up to whatever role he agrees to.

He's almost 80 years old......not 56. Loved Grant as a coach and person but some of you sound a little bit crazy when you are actually pushing an 80 year old to coach collegiate goaltenders!

Of course I realize he's not 56, I am though and I'm telling you as clearly as I possibly can that he can more than keep up with just about any 50 year old I can think of. You may find that hard to comprehend but that's the way it is. Besides, you don't have to be an olympic class athlete to coach and instruct the finer points of the game of hockey, especially goaltending. Knowledge of the game and experience with countless kids making the same mistakes you've seen before and the credibility to make even the most egotistical recruit listen to you is worth way more than fitting into an arbitrary age grouping. I'm not sure how someone who claims to be a long time Maine fan could be so unfamiliar with him and so focused on his age in years, but you really should make the effort to meet Grant someday, one of the all time greats I've met in my lifetime.

Can't see Gendron waiting for a couple weeks while NHL Positions open up for Leach to decide.

The problem with Niko was he was lazy and Walsh use to bench him for it.
Yeah I watched him for 4 years also, he took his soph and Jr season off, he was still a better player than anyone on the other line mentioned

I could see Grant coming in for a particular reason to consult if you will but I cannot see him being a coach for any team.

I can't see him wanting to commit to a full time job either, but if he decided he wanted to I don't think his age would be relevant at all. I'd love to see him involved with Maine hockey in some way, such as a goalie coach and/or consultant to Red and his full time coaching staff. He's still got a lot to offer and we'd be fools to not be open to anything he was willing to contribute.

I could see him being the volunteer assistant for a couple years to help the program get back on its feet. I'm sure the last few years have been very tough to take for him and I hope/think he would want to see Maine hockey back where it belongs.

Bet that Standbrook knew right after the 1st season that with Whitehead in charge that the Program was in trouble and if nothing was done quickly that this is where Maine would be...rebuilding...hopefully he does have some imput with Gendron and the Team.
