Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

OK, IIRC he had some good games in his Senior season, but he was a bad goalie overall in his college career. No question about that.

If that somehow translates into him being a good goalie coach, more power to him.

Has he been seasoning somewhere since he left Maine?

Probably seasoning hamburgers somewhere. :)

No question in my mind that Jimmy was the man, hands down. This Wilson coaching thing.........meh, show me. ;) I wanna see some results. Maybe Willie has some teaching ability and maybe he actually knows how to play the position but was just horrible at the execution part. I just have to wonder what prompted Red to give him a shot....I mean, what did he see as his qualities other than he tried playing that position at one time. I suppose its better to have an ex-goalie teaching rather than the stick boy. I suppose, but maybe not.

I'll ask again: Who were you expecting? Were you thinking Jimmy was going to forgo the millions of dollars Detroit is paying him to come back and be a grad assistant and get no compensation? It is about as realistic as the notion that someone would go from a head coaching job in the NHL to a college job for 1/5 the salary...

It just seems that most of the "thoughts and opinions" seem to be negative ones, and the same people seem to post negative "thoughts and opinions" about almost everything the university does. After a while it all comes off as bitching and moaning for the sake of bitching and moaning.

Frank Doyle

I'll agree with you on that one. Frank was exceptionally athletic, probably more-so than Jimmy, but he just came along at the wrong time. (Aside from his perfect performance in that Albany Regional.)

I was also a fan of Lundin. He had all the tools, but was very under-used. I still contend that Maine would have been better in that era if Bish and Lundin had rotated.

I disagree a bit. Seems to me that most long-time Maine fans are excited about Tim's early departure and the new regime that's in place... I know that I am, and will travel extensively once again to see them play.

Wilson was something of a curious choice to coach the goalies, yes... I hope that he doesn't advise them to spend as much time behind the net as he did, but, WTH, his advice is free for the time being, and doesn't necessarily have to be followed.

(I was hoping for Grant on that one, or at least somebody who Grant had coached, but there's no need to be too greedy right now... As long as Dave doesn't mess with Marty too much, Maine should be OK -or better than OK- in net this season.)

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

Wilson lived down the hall from me in Hancock in 2006/2007, he started dating the RA and we lived like kings with her distracted for months

Doyle suffered from two things... Jimmy was there at the same time, and for some reason, Maine scored more goals when he was in net. Jimmy would win the 1-0 and 2-1 games and Franky would win the 4-1, 5-2 games...

As of last year's media guide:
2nd in Career GAA - 1.96 (Howard - 1.84)
2nd in Career Save % - .919 (Howard - .931)
2nd in Single Season GAA - 1.81 (Howard - 1.19)
Tied 3rd (with Bishop) in Single Season Save % - .923 (Howard - .956 in 03-04, NCAA Record and .924 in 04-05)
2nd in Career Shut Outs - 7 (Howard - 15)
2nd in Single Season Shut Outs - 5 (Howard - 6 Twice)

In 2003-04, Howard and Doyle combined for 11 Shutouts

A Trademark of Maine Hockey, strong goaltending, the envy of Hockey East and the rest of College Hockey, big drop-off and decline since then...this needs to be a Maine strong point for the Maine Program to rebound back.Bottom line you win with strong goaltending.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

If Maine gets back to playing an attacking style, and Marty progresses even a little, we might be looking at 20+ wins in '13-'14.

Call me delusional, but I really believe that.

Defense would be my only concern for Maine fans. I think Coach Gendron's philosophy and coaching style will bring out the most in his forwards and he has some talent there between five top returnees and some recruits. Defensively is my concern. Who is going to step into the last D pairing and be suitable blue liners in Hockey East. Rutt and Hutton will be good and I believe O'Connor will be better with new staff.

Maine should be better than UMass, UVM, Northeastern, but after that, I'm not sure. Certainly Maine could be better than other teams but it will take exceeding expectations.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

I agree that the D was gruesome under Tim, but I see that as the easiest thing to fix with some competent coaching available.

Scoring is going to be the issue IMO, as Maine doesn't seem to have very many decent sets of hands right now.

True, but I think if they return to a work ur azz off swarming type offense like teams of bygone years, they will create plenty of chances that even some of those club handed players will be able to score off opportunities. Im not that concerned with the defense right now, I think they'll be a bit of a project early on but will improve drastically under Jay Leach's tutelage. Gonna be interesting....just hope Marty maintains or increases his level of confidence he exhibited last year.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

I don't have many expectations for next season, this team won 2 games at home last season so I don't expect much. What I'd like to see is a team that goes up and down all 3 periods, a D that gets after the other team physically instead of that poke check crap. I expect them not to run out of gas in the 3rd. I'd like to see a penalty kill like the old days, where they chase the puck instead of sitting back, that probably depends on whether they have the forwards that can do that?

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

I think the team is going to be pretty good. The young players continued to improve throughout the year and developed confidence. They should continue to improve. Couple this with continued improvement along with good talent coming in and I see the team finishing 4th or 5th in Hockey East (as long as the goal tending is as good as last year). I am very encouraged for the coming year.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

I feel better today about Maine Hockey then I did last year at this time...with that said I am looking forward to this season and beyond with renewed enthusiasm...knowing full well there will be highs & lows and ups & downs this season.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

Has anyone received their season ticket renewal form in the mail?
