Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

Sure.......I love everything not associated with Tim Whitehead.........I love how Gendron has handled himself and what he has said, I love the Ben Guite pick for assistant coach, I love the fact he has involved Maine fans again. I don't like next season's schedule........but that is Tim Whitehead's doing........and if some of it has do with finances.........that is his doing as well because revenues have fallen so much.
Plus with the NEW Conferences in play this year...you may see for the 2-3 years teams scrambling to fill OOC games, myself the Big 10 Conference is just $elf $erving and with the NEW NCHC the landscape of College Hockey has changed and I don't know if it will be for the better, time will tell...the WCHA has changed also and will be a weaker Conference...ECAC has not changed and the AHA has UConn going over to Hockey East next season with that Conference looking to add new teams later on...I still think Hockey East @ 10 Teams would have been the best way to go,along with keeping a Playoff system in play not like the others letting everyone in. But one thing for sure is that there's a POSITIVE Attitude @ Maine Hockey in place, now the work begins for Gendron and Crew....this will be a very interesting season to say the least.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

More schedules have come out, without Maine on them. In particular, cross Michigan State off the list.

Teams that still have NC games (that Maine doesn't already play NC)

1 Bentley, Sacred Heart, Niagara, Cornell, BC, Merrimack, Vermont
2 Air Force, Canisius, Northern Michigan
5 Penn State

UMass still has 4 NC games against unknown opponents. Army has already released its schedule with 3 NC spots open but not scheduled. Other teams may be stuck following suit.

On a strange note. , heard TW was talking g to kimbal union about their opening. His wife could teach there as well...

TW still has a year left on his contract.... I highly doubt he will take another position and leave 190k on the table...they do not have to pay him that money if he takes another full time job... Only way we see TW behind the bench next year is if he is making close to the same amount of money---and while he may have inquired at KUA it would be way too big of a loss on his end...

"Michael Szmatula, one of the top scorers in the United States Hockey League this past season, has asked out of his National Letter of Intent in order to follow his junior coach, Jim Montgomery, to the University of Denver.

But, according to sources, Northeastern does not intend to grant Szmatula a release, meaning he'll need to essentially transfer if he wants to play for Montgomery at Denver.

Szmatula gave Sacred Heart a verbal commitment last spring before decommiting in order to commit to Northeastern. He was the fifth-leading scorer in the USHL this past season, finishing with 76 points (37 goals, 39 assists) in 63 games. His 37 goals were second in the league.

By signing a National Letter of Intent, the school agrees to provide the player with a scholarship for a period of at least one year, while the player agrees to attend the school for the same period.

According to NCAA rules, if Szmatula breaks his National Letter of Intent agreement and enrolls at Denver before reporting to Northeastern, he'll have to sit out the entire 2013-14 season and will forfeit one year of eligibility, meaning he'll be eligible for just three years of NCAA hockey."

And you're posting this in the Maine thread because....?

NCAA = National Communist Athletic Association

Northeastern should cut their loses and not be so vindictive.

I'm generally not a fan of the NC$$ but they have these rules for a reason. Northeastern is completely within their rights to hold him the his commitment.

agreed. sucks for the kid that he'll lose a year, but he made a commitment to NU and now wants to back out of that commitment... there's a price to pay and he knew the rules (or should have) when he signed... and if i'm northeastern, your god****ed right i am taking a hardline approach... think about how they might be different with gaudreau and gillies....

NU has to feel like being used is getting old.

Just because they're within their rights to enforce a policy that penalizes a player for terminating his letter of intent before he even sets foot on campus doesn't mean they should go out of their way to see that he can't enjoy four years of eligibility elsewhere. Northeastern could release him if they chose to, but instead they would rather make his life difficult, and I guess I shouldn't be surprised based on the reactions and it's clear that I'm in the minority, but I would have liked to think that Northeastern was above such pettiness.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

That makes sense. There aren't many alumni here in Portland.

Did you read the article?

The Civic Center renovation was the issue, not a lack of desire to play here.

That makes two of us.

No I didn't. My bad. I thought the renovations would be done by then.

Worse news for the folks in Portland, no radio for the next five years. One of life's great mysteries is how Maine ever got tangled up with that Learfield outfit.
