Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

I thought it was a clean hit also. I like to see smart aggressive play, putting pressure on the opponent, finishing hits while maintaining inside position, reading the support and knowing when it's time to unload. In general making life miserable for the opposing forwards when they venture into the d zone.

I watched this game on the computer and I really couldn’t tell with no replay on the call, however I’m pleased to read the comments of those who were at the Gutt. I’ve like Rutt’s aggressive style of play and appreciate his efforts.

Lafayette won their league, though, I think they got the auto-bid. That's not being PC or inclusive.

Sure it is; Lafayette wouldn't have been within a country mile of the tournament without the gift-AQ... And I fail to see what's equitable about their getting a shot at the NCAAs without having the body of work to support their inclusion.

I hope to live long enough to see PS fields in all college sports selected on the basis of merit alone, and simply not by dint of being the best of any group of schools that are designated "conference", as though that in and of itself means anything.

(I'm confident that I won't, though... The trend for a while now is that everyone gets to play, whether there's any logic involved or not.)

20 minutes in 13 games is less than 1 penalty per game, a far cry from Joey's pace. He does take some ill advised penalties, but many are of the variety of either putting on a hard hit or just being bigger and stronger and the ref feels that he has to call something. He needs to play physically and with an edge in order to be effective, otherwise he's just another soft D that all of you guys have been complaining about for all these years. Personally I like it when the opposing forwards are nervous with the puck.

I wasn't likening Rutt to Diamond penalty-for-penalty; I was just observing that Jake takes Joey-like (selfish) ones at times, and that this Maine team can't afford them.

Overall, the D is playing WAY better than they did under Tim, IMO.

I've only seen 6 games, but this group as a whole has committed fewer bone-headed turnovers in their own end than I saw Heggs alone commit in the course of a game or two when TW was in charge. Even once-promising guys like O'Conner -who later went South- are getting their games together, and that's saving me a fortune in Rolaids and throat lozenges.

Except that Lafayette was a weird case wasn't it? Fordham can't win the conference (despite going 11-1) due to the use of scholarship players. Therefore, 2nd in line Lafayette gets the nod.

I agree and think that the D and the whole team is a work in progress. I'm pretty sure that we'll see gradual improvement in all areas for the home stretch.

Yeah, that fact alone makes me wonder why such a "conference" exists, when its own members don't play even by the same rules... It's a completely absurd situation, and it makes granting the Patriot League an AQ look that much more idiotic.

(Still, I'm expecting Fordham to give Towson a game.)

The rest of the PL schools are slowly upping their scholarship numbers until they match Fordham in two years, at which point they can win the autobid again.

Basically, Fordham had a scheduling alliance with the PL this year and was evaluated as an independent. The PL would have qualified for an autobid without Fordham (Holy Cross, Colgate, Lafayette, Lehigh, Bucknell, Georgetown is the minimum six).

Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

True, but at the same time, I kinda have issues with the referee encouraging players to go at it.

That game was essentially a scrimmage for UNH. The FCS field is way too ridiculously PC/"inclusive".

I honestly believe that Maine is going to hammer UNH in Orono next Saturday. (The Bears having extra rest while getting healthy is gonna make all the difference, IMO.)
Solid prediction

Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

Maine football with a UNH hockey like season? ;)

Maine was picked 8th in preseason. Their offense was good, their D not so much. UNH is peaking at the right time.

Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

Maine didn't play as well as UNH. UNH gave their quarterback much more protection and time than Maine's offensive line. I think Maine should have run the ball more. Still a good season for Maine in winning their first conference title and hosting their first playoff game. UNH football is analogous to their hockey team, they are perennially in the playoffs but can't win the big one.;)

I'll take my lumps here; UNH was way more physical than Maine, no question about it, and I'm happy that you feel personally vindicated by the outcome of the game.

Still, a great year for the football Bears, and I hope the linemen hit the weights hard during the off-season.

Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

This is horrifying.

This crap is typical of the old NHL, when institutionalized stupidity was part and parcel of the game... At some point in the future, I predict that the moronic concept of paying an "enforcer" to waste a spot on the roster will become nothing more than a bad memory.

Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

Agree. Paul Stewart played many games in Portland against the Maine Mariners during his AHL career, most of which included a fight. I can clearly remember one game in which he was on the short end of a fight. He was on the ice on his knees, with a very bloodied face but waving to Glen Cochrane to come fight him next. Bad decision.
Having that mentality is not what an impartial referee should have in his background.
