Win a couple and people think they are going to be a real good team, its the same team as last year with a couple of new freshman. The past few years Maine can make goalies look like Ken Dryden, they hit everything but net, that trend continues. Team still needs offense. Lets face it, Rutt can't keep up

Jake was second to Diamond (147 penalty minutes) last year with 61 in 36 games played. This year he leads the team with 20 after 13 games. Just about the same pace as last year. He does have a nice shot though, when he can get it off. All of his 4 goals last year came on the PP which tells me he needs time and space.

Maine's got to figure out how to bring that commitment and focus they have at home to their away games. It has to be harder, as they're not in their own beds, following their set routines, lots more distractions and other things you can't control when you're on the road. It's a learning process, just like everything else they've been doing this season.

I disagree. I think there are fewer distractions on the road. All you have to do is play hockey. Show up where and when you've been told, eat this, sleep here. At home you've got classmates, neighbors, dishes, schlepping to the dining hall, scraping the ice from your windshield, finding parking.....

I disagree. I think there are fewer distractions on the road. All you have to do is play hockey. Show up where and when you've been told, eat this, sleep here. At home you've got classmates, neighbors, dishes, schlepping to the dining hall, scraping the ice from your windshield, finding parking.....

I agree with you. Team becomes more bonded because they are spending exclusive time together. If you were to ask most coaches they would say the same thing, fewer distractions on the road.

It's nice to see the results at home. There's no need to panic now though just because they haven't picked up a win in 6 tries on the road. This team is a work in progress. Vermont is a good team, and Maine did have its chances and rang a few posts. I'm happy that as far as public relations goes, when addressing the issues on the road, Coach Gendron knows how to talk hockey to the fans, so you know he and his staff are on top of things with the team and there's no need to panic and there's no real crisis. A bigger concern would be at the moment is whether or not Maine can continue its success at home and not just think that things are "in the bag" this weekend against Lowell just because it's a home game.

Just a point of protocol that it would be more productive if we didn't openly criticize players personally, or at least try to make it seem constructive.

He does have a good shot. They seem to get thru to the goalie. I like a Dman who plays with an edge but the penalties are hurting the team

Good shot or not. I just look at the kids body language etc. Last weekend against BC when I was sitting behind the bench he has such a shatty attitude, wasn't talking to his line mates,wasn't fired up, was the ONLY kid not paying attn to Red when he spoke. Wasn't into it. IDK. Just posting what I observed 1st hand.

Maine will play UNH in football. UNH won their game 45-7.

That game was essentially a scrimmage for UNH. The FCS field is way too ridiculously PC/"inclusive".

I honestly believe that Maine is going to hammer UNH in Orono next Saturday. (The Bears having extra rest while getting healthy is gonna make all the difference, IMO.)

Thing is, he's not as skilled as Diamond was, yet takes the same sort of selfish penalties... He spends more of the team-money than he earns.

I'd sit him and let him think about that fact for a game or two, if I was Red.

From what I've heard I doubt that's true, Red takes no crap, none, nada, he'd find himself in street clothes

Question to anyone out there who ordered Frozen Fenway Tickets this Fall thru the UMaine Hockey Ticket Application Form,have you received your TICKETS yet..? My understanding was they were suppose to be mailed and delivered by November...any one with info would be a help. Have e-mail reps @ UMaine and still waiting to hear from them.

20 minutes in 13 games is less than 1 penalty per game, a far cry from Joey's pace. He does take some ill advised penalties, but many are of the variety of either putting on a hard hit or just being bigger and stronger and the ref feels that he has to call something. He needs to play physically and with an edge in order to be effective, otherwise he's just another soft D that all of you guys have been complaining about for all these years. Personally I like it when the opposing forwards are nervous with the puck.

I thought it was a clean hit also. I like to see smart aggressive play, putting pressure on the opponent, finishing hits while maintaining inside position, reading the support and knowing when it's time to unload. In general making life miserable for the opposing forwards when they venture into the d zone.

Lafayette won their league, though, I think they got the auto-bid. That's not being PC or inclusive. NCAA tournaments should always have auto-bids leagues. Most of the time you get a scrimmage but then again you get a Vermont basketball win, a Maine baseball win, a Holy Cross beating Minnesota.

I saw Rutt play 3 or 4 games last year (let's not talk too much about last year). With Joey still there, Rutt's penalty activity seemed negligible. He's not even in the same conversation with Diamond when it comes to penalties - Cmon! He's huge, he's almost always healthy, and he eats up a LOT of ice time. Intimidating for sure, but not a cheap shot guy or a skank. I'd like if Red teaches him to play the body much better, given his size. Hockeyman's point well taken...20 penalty minutes in 13 games is not egregious. Going to the UML game this Sunday and will be watching him very closely.

Just thinking about the season-to-date. 6-6-1. Not great, not bad. 6 wins at home/6 losses on the road. After 13 games last season, Bears were 2-10-1 with zero, nix, nada wins at Alfond and no prospect for much better.
1. It's a considerable improvement over '12-'13.
2. Red clearly has their attention and respect, and a whole new system.
3. Red inherited a disaster of a situation and has done well with what he has to work with.
4. There is an offense. Bears are scoring goals, albeit sporadically.

UML at home Sunday will be a very tough contest. They are for real...guys like Derek Arnold...geeze why can't we get guys like that? It may come down to Marty vs Hellebuyck.

This Sunday's game should be a good matchup. Both teams have good goal tending with UML having the upper hand in goal production from their upper classmen. Most of Maine's scoring so far is coming from freshmen and sophomores. Maine defeated the River Hawks last year 4-3 in OT at Alfond Arena. Could be a similar outcome this weekend.
