Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

apparently not.... has to do with classes he took at a canadian university while playing juniors last year and how the nc$$ classifies foreign universities.... it's a bit ridiculous....

It's beyond ridiculous. Maine never gets the rub of the green with these things. I just don't get why the NCAA wants to keep kids from playing. Does this mean he'll play for two years instead of one and a half?

according to the article, he'll have two years of eligibility beginning next fall... in the meantime, he'll continue to skate with the team during practice...

Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

Watching the Bruins game tonight and noticed that Zach Sill is playing for Pittsburgh. I remember he left the team or was dismissed back in 06 I think? Does anyone remember the reason?

IIRC, he was purged, along with Czuba... And I thought it was definitely the right move by Tim at the time, because they both had ham-hands and appeared to be going nowhere fast.

I'm absolutely amazed that he found an NHL job, even if it's just for a cup of coffee up there, which it appears to be.

Could be a blessing in disguise. He will have another year to develop his skills and to become stronger before playing his final two years. The unknown is whether or not he chooses to remain in college if he has enough credits to graduate. He may choose to leave for other pursuits.

Appears to be a protocol change at the end of games. Coaches shake hands and chat as before, but they don't shake the hands of players. Is that a league change?

Not that I've noticed at the Whitt. Coaches shook all the players' hands at every game I've been to thus far. Even Mr. Petulant, coach Madigan.

Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

Ridiculous. What is the NCAA afraid of kids flocking to foreign schools to sit out their transfer window? Because that'd be a huge issue in any sport besides hockey, there are so many European and Canadian schools offering basketball and football that will steal talent and facilitate bogus transfers.

If he just went to a JUCO factory like in those other two sports, that'd be fine. But since he's a Canadian kid and he went home, he gets the shaft. So backwards.

he actually left umass, got an associates at a two year school in the us, and then enrolled at a canadian school

Really? He played a whopping 6 games as an 18 year old freshman and had 2 points and didn't look bad in the games I saw him. I'm not surprised he made it for a cup of coffee his scouting report was always he was a character guy and after he got the boot from Maine he went on to captain Moncton in the Q and he's a captain for the AHL Penguins so he certainly has leadership capabilities something Timmy never liked in his players.

+1, the kid looked pretty good to me also. he definitely new where his side of the ice was and didn't shy away from taking the body.

103.9 appears to be off air right now, because I can't pick up any signal at all for that Coach's radio show at Seasons.

He was a "muck it up" type player who did have some skill, which is why Maine recruited him. He will help the NHL team but won't be relied upon to put up great numbers. While at Maine he had off ice issues that were not publically revealed at the time. Draw your own conclusions as to what they were.

pretty sure uvm has a free webcast of all of their games... can be linked through the maine schedule page.....

Whitehead once said that it was his choice to shake the hands of players after a game, leading me to believe it has nothing to do with protocol.

Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

Do the games this weekend matter very much for pairwise? I'd like to see Sullivan get the start tomorrow night and see Campbell and Williams play in at least one of the games. Has Merchant been injured the last couple of weeks?

It was Maine's protocol for at least 12 years to have coaches (home and visiting), shake the hands of all players at the end of games. I have not seen opposing coaches shake the hands of players at Alfond Arena this year. Correct me if I'm wrong, but coaches shaked the hands of players after games when Walsh was coaching also. Don't know why that has been eliminated. Just a different philosophy apparently.
