Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

Is anyone actually paying $50 for chairbacks vs. Bentley?

I do think it's unfortunate that the athletic department continues to think a $50 price for chairbacks is justifiable, given the economically depressed area we live in. Where else in Hockey East are prices as high as they are at the Alfond?

“We competed hard, we stayed after them,” said Gendron. “Other than taking five straight penalties in the second period, it was good. But we also have a million things to work on. There were plenty of mistakes.

“But the things we worked on all fall: hard work, incredible compete level, attacking the net, getting on people on the forecheck, stealing pucks and counter-attacking… that sort of stuff was there today,” added Gendron.

Again, hearing lots of good things from the players and the coaches in these articles. A far cry from the last six or so seasons of excuses and lessons learned. Seems like the biggest thing that needed to be done, a change of attitude, is already there.

.... A far cry from the last six or so seasons of excuses...

My favorite was gripping the sticks too tight!

The fan support is there too even though the seats weren't filled. That twitter trends statistic was impressive! Reminded me of 2002 when the students at UMaine got together and all voted several times on a web poll that UNH had posted on their athletics website, asking which team they thought would win the Frozen Four in Minneapolis. Maine had thousands more votes than any other team, including UNH, and the webmaster set the poll back and took several thousands away from Maine. The next day in the Fosters Daily Democrat, out of Dover NH, ran an article that had a headline "Rabid Maine Fans Wage Web War," with an explanation for the increased traffic on their site of the thousands of Maine fans clearing cookies and voting repeatedly!

http://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2013/10/07_taking__a_look_at_coaches.php - Taking a Look at Coaches to Watch in 2013-14 - by Dave Starman/Columnist

Below is what Starman says about Red:

Red Gendron, Maine

Gendron is a first-year head coach in college hockey who probably has forgotten more about hockey than most coaches ever know. The mind of the man is a hockey goldmine and the Black Bears will be the happy recipients of what he brings.

Gendron is a straight-ahead, no-nonsense guy, but is also a teacher first and foremost. Winning is important and he has recruited several elite level NCAA players that have had great careers in each of his stops in college hockey. He brings an NHL pedigree and had a ton of experience working within USA Hockey. He's also written several of the manuals we often use in the Coaching Education Program. Maine was always a team whose fundamentals were good and that will only get better under Gendron.

Red doesn’t tell you what you want to hear. He tells you the truth and then helps you sort through it to become a better player and a better hockey team. He makes Maine a legit threat and has some good players on the roster. Give him a half a season to get his system in place and then sit back, watch, and enjoy the style you will see in Orono.

Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

I am getting excited reading what Red has to say.

Some great nuggets by Larry about the number of season tickets lost and the attendance compared to pre-93. Makes dismissing Whitehead make more sense, but not sure why those numbers are just getting published now? Unless I missed them earlier. Seems like in the last week Larry has written/confirmed several things that have been circulated on the board for a while.

Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

Larry has been the Maine coach's mouthpiece for years and years now. He only gets on when board with any change after the tide has already turned.

I wouldn't hang my hat on whatever bland comments he makes, if I were you; he's a company-man all the way.

Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

Not to kill the hockey buzz but the football team has jumped from 23rd to 14th in the latest rankings after the beatdown put on #25 Delaware.

FCS Rankings

Did TIMMAY have THAT much power??? Or maybe Mahoney has sobered up?

To put it another way: You've been reading his stuff for years and most have heard him on the radio. It's your own fault if you put credence in anything he says.

I don't see where Larry had much of a choice. If he alienated Timmy there goes the biggest part of his job and it's not like there are a lot of openings for sports writers in eastern maine.

Exactly. Those guys have to walk a fine line. He couldn't just blast Timmay week in and week out. The BDN wouldn't have it, the U wouldn't have it.

Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?

What's everyone's thoughts/predictions for this weekend? Looks like St.L has two or three of their top scorers back and seem to have a lot of jr's and sr's on the team. I see a split.

I am not really sure what to think yet. We have to see how the lines work out, how the players gel together and find out where the scoring will come from this year. I am excited about the season and think that we will be surprised in the end, but have no idea on predictions to start the season.

The problem existed before Tim was the coach and it will still exist for years to come.
