Re: Maine Hockey '13-14: Are you Red-E?
Pieces,OK, Timmays style sucked, Red has taken those pieces and made a team that competes instead of a team that sits back and watches
Exactly. If TIMMAY was still here, would we be seeing the all-freshman line playing together as the number two line, or would they be getting minimal ice time on the third and fourth lines, as TIMMAY was wont to do with his freshmen, different lines every week. You know, first they would have to prove they were good defensively before they could see any serious time in the lineup. And one mistake, or blown coverage, and see you in the stands.
Red and the staff have done wonders changing the mindset of this team, and the players look as if they have bought into their system wholeheartedly. The thing I have noticed over these last couple of games is how much space the guys seem to have to make plays, they're spread out and in spots where the defenders aren't, ready to receive a pass, or chase down the puck. Lomberg driving the net, slicing around the one defender and settign up between the two. Compared to TIMMAY's style of every man on the puck, which created a huge jumble of players all clogged together, with no space to move or do anything with the puck once they had it, defenders clustered all over them as well. Defensemen clearing people from the goalmouth instead of letting opponents stand there taking three and four whacks at the puck. And they fight, and compete, and pester. They didn't give BC any space to do anything with the puck, they were all over them. Forechecking, taking the puck away, acting, not reacting. And they didn't seem a step slower to BC at all, compared to TIMMAY's teams who couldn't seem to beat defenders skating backwards.
I said a few weeks ago I thought this team had the makings of becoming a real solid team as the season went on, thinking January, maybe February. Looks like maybe they're a bit ahead of that schedule. Now I'm not saying they're set to make an NCAA run just yet, there's bound to be setbacks and struggles ahead, they're still largely a young team. But they've taken the first steps, learned how to win at home, make Alfond a tough place to play. Now they have to build on that when they're on the road, take that winning attitude, that compete level with them. Develop a consistent work ethic and winning attitude everywhere, not just at home.
I like where this team is at, and where they're going to be going. Especially when you look at where they were a year ago. They look like the Maine teams of old.
