Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

That would mean finishing in 8th place or higher. Reasonable expectation and possible.

I can see some of the returning D-men (especially Renouf and Michel) improving more and McGovern as well. Rob was just too inconsistent at times this year but showed flashes (IceBreaker). With only five seniors leaving and a large incoming class, it'll be interesting to see who among non-seniors stays/goes.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

I don't understand which players coming next year are supposed to be Gus, Flynn or Abbott. Everyone here is excited about Robbins who was the highest scoring freshmen, he scored 11 points all year. 11. That was a good two week stretch for Nyquist.

I just... I don't see it. I don't see the talent on the current roster. I don't see the improvement on a game to game or season-long level. I don't see a star player walking into the lineup next year and producing enough as a freshman to make this a .500ish team like Larry does.

Exactly. Anyone see a player on this team other than Tegeler who was significantly improved over the prior season? Anyone see a number who were significantly worse? The players we do have just don't seem to be making improvement year after year, they're exactly what they showed as freshmen and nothing more.

Anyone seriously think this team would be where it is now if Jimmy were at the helm?

You don't think Merchant improved at all?

Is this Jimmy with an unlimited budget, or Jimmy working under the same budgetary constraints that have handcuffed Red?

The Budget is a problem...but the ON ICE PRODUCT and how they perform is RG's and Staff's doing's.

Merchant did his improvement last season. He had more points this season, but that was more his being on the top line for most of it. He really wasn't head and shoulders above what he was last year.

Yes, Jimmy in the same position Red's in. I can't imagine in his third season at the helm, his team would be as bad as this one was.

I don't think it would be an NCAA/top 5 HEA team though. I think if you are a C/C+ as a coach, you probably finish about where this team is. I think if you are a B/B+ you can get home ice in the HEA playoffs. I think if you are A/A+, you can be a top 5 HEA team, an NCAA tournament contender at Maine.

Maine trying to win Hockey East with its budget and resources and facilities is like Luxembourg at the beginning of World War II looking around and saying "You know, if we play our cards right we can win this thing!!!!"

Not only was Shawn the right coach for UMaine, he was there at the right time, when UMaine was fiscally competitive with the other college hockey heavyweights. He didn't win BECAUSE we could compete in all the off ice categories, but he had the opportunity to win because Maine had a competitive budget and competitive facilities with the rest of college hockey.

Talk of Renouf getting some serious consideration for a pro contract now

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

This on twitter:

Per @davegisaac, the #Flyers have signed F Steven Swavely to an amateur tryout (ATO). Reading, PA native who captained University of Maine.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

Well I guess a 8 win season and a 2 and done playoffs has sent Maine Hockey to it's own little ghost town...well now we can WATCH good hockey from the 2nd round of Hockey East to the NCAA's to the Frozen 4...funny thing was Maine use to be in this Movie...now we are on the outside while the others have the fun...stinks doesn't it..?

Renouf gone ! Next year's defense just go a little worse.

It certainly is a loss for next year, good for the program though. Hopefully he can follow Hutton's path and surprise a lot of people. This completely goes against the narrative that Red can't develop players.

It s just frustrating. You have a lack of talent to begin with, then you have a guy like Dan who's really come on and poof, he's gone. Almost seems to me he could have enhanced his value a lot more by sticking around for next yr and then signing with someone.

That's just how college hockey is nowadays. You're rarely going to get more than one good season out of a player. The entry level contracts are so limited I'm not sure waiting an extra year would have done him much good. Holway should be a good replacement for him and you would hope the guys who return are improved over last season.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

Really don't think it's gonna make a difference. I like Renouf, probably the best of our defensemen, but we ain't talking about losing a Prestin Ryan type here.

Like Hutton, he'll do better to be away from this program.

Maybe the difference between 9 wins and 8. So, whatever.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

Dan signed with Detroit, reporting to Grand Rapids

Being away from this Program will make a difference...and he's going to a Organization that will work with him and get everything out of him...he's far better off and NOT wasting another year.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

With the departure of Renouf, are these the recruits coming in next fall.? Did I missed someone.? Incoming: Holway - Pearson - Fossier - Shea - Doherty - Pappalardo.
