Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?
Delayed response here but this question has had me wondering for some time - what coaches’ salaries are. With some quick and dirty internet searching here is a mix, can’t speak to accuracy, it’s what shows up.
Shawns era was an anomaly for us, he was just a great leader for the program, we were lucky.
If the athletic department wants to have a successful hockey program competing for titles every year they have to be fully committed to that. I just don’t see it. Without it we can say what we want about coaches, players, and recruiting, but we’ll get the best that can be, and maybe getting lucky again.
Every now and again there is mention of bringing in a “cheap” coach on a low salary, what a gamble! That’s not a commitment to me.
Look at what Penn State has done with commitment and loads of money, from club hockey to ranked 15 today in what 4 or 5 years.
How’s the NCAA scholarship fully funding rule going to affect recruiting? Maine and other schools say they aren’t going to do it.
Gophers – Lucia – 330,000 with 200k in potential bonus. And big retirement plan.
Wisconsin – Eaves – Base 236,000
Denver - Gwozdecky in 2007 -- 355 k plus performance elements
North Dokata – Kakstol 2012 650 k with bonus. 300k base.
Minn Duluth – Sandelin 235k
Mich state – Anastos 320K plus bonus
Miami Ohio – Blasi 400K in 2014
Penn State – Gadowsky - I’m still looking
UNH – Umile – 242k
Lowell – Bazin – 280k
BC – York – 576k in 2013 (a web site says BU’s Quinn may make more)
Minn State – Hastings – 290k
Mich Tech – Pearson – 275k
Vermont – Sneddon 230k plus incentives -- the article said this may be one of the three lowest salaries in Hockey East.
UMO – Red – 205k – Whitehead was around 195k ( we might be lowest salary in Hock east)
If programs like Lowell, Providence, Michigan Tech, etc were able to find coaches that have turned things around, I have to believe Maine can find someone a lot better than what Red Gendron has done so far. Might not ever get back to Shawn Walsh level, but you'd be better off with Tim Whitehead at this point. Does anyone know what Maine pays compared to the programs I mentioned?
