Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine is excited to announce the replacement of the fighting Black Bears with a return to the Elephants.

From 1903-14, the elephant was a regular on the football sidelines. Because it's important to never forget, UMaine is honoring its legacy by introducing the new logo.

The new elephant logo stands for Maine's strength and work ethic, and will be worn proudly by University of Maine athletes.

Go Maine! Go Blue! Go Elephants!

Wouldn't that be more fitting for Vermont?

I can just imagine you guys seething every time they show Monty giving that pre-game talk...

What is there to be angry about? We are a broke-*** public school in a rural area. We were never going to be able to outbid Denver. Expecting someone to halve their salary for the privilege of coaching here is and was unrealistic.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

I know this is a college hockey forum but, FIRE CLAUDE !

Here's what I just posted on another thread: "Not that it is credible to assert that there is any correlation, but it sure was strange that ever since they had that "ceremony" honoring him as the winningest coach in B's history, the team completely tanked. I can't imagine he did anything significantly differently than he has done his entire coaching career. I get the whole "scapegoat" thing, but in this case, (and I have been ranting about this for decades), this team has had NO offense since the Bobby Orr days. The organization has never adapted to how the game is played now. They still think they can win with "goal prevention." The reality is, if Luongo doesn't completely implode in 2011 (and Thomas doesn't stand on his head), this team has still not won a cup in 44 years. Frankly, I place the blame squarely on "lunch pail Cam." He just doesn't seem to value "skill" players, as if they're some kind of wimps. He'd rather have a no-talent "hard-working" guy who couldn't score if he was shooting at a 12 x 8 net. They'll probably trade Pastenak next... "

Meaning that the PROBLEM here is Cam Neely. Sciarelli leaves and he brings in another stooge to carry out his outdated and ineffective philosophy. Of course, Jacobs wouldn't know a puck from a buck, so there will never be any intervention from him. Cam will have free reign to do whatever he wants as long as he wants to (or until people STOP going and they draw 5,000 per game).

Mike was behind only Billy Swift as my favorite Maine baseball player. Those were the days.

Mark Sweeney is the color guy on Padres' broadcasts this year. Dick Enberg was giving him a hard time about whether he was on the track team at Maine the other night. I didn't realize he had played football, too.

Yeah, it's not hockey, sue me. With the Sox opening at home against Baltimore, I was doing a little Googling, and happened across this.

It's a crime they didn't give him a Gold Glove that year.

Found this too. Inspiring.

One of the cool things about those teams were how many local guys played. I can think of 6 or 7 guys that went to orono high. They didn't have travel teams, they played babe Ruth and American legion but other than that it was high school ball in the spring.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

The schedule is starting to take shape. It looks like the Hockey East schedule will mirror last year's and the series at Miami and Colgate are set. We can also approximate the UNH non-conference games.

October 1 - OPEN
October 7-8 OPEN
October 14-15 OPEN (Homecoming)
October 21-22 @Miami
October 28-29 @Colgate
November 4-5 BOSTON COLLEGE
November 11 LOWELL
November 13 @LOWELL
November 18-19 @VERMONT
November 25-26 OPEN
December 2 @NEW HAMPSHIRE
December 3 NEW HAMPSHIRE
December 9-10 OPEN
December 16-17 OPEN
December 27-31 New Hampshire (Manchester)/New Hampshire (Portland)
January 6-7 OPEN
January 13-14 @CONNECTICUT
January 20 @BOSTON U
January 22 BOSTON U
January 27-28 UMASS
February 3-4 @PROVIDENCE
February 10-11 NOTRE DAME
February 17-18 @MERRIMACK
February 24-25 NORTHEASTERN

There is a home game with Brown scheduled at some point, but it can't be in October because the Ivy League doesn't start play until October 21. It can be assumed that there are two remaining home series, plus one remaining road game against someone. That would give Maine 16 home/16 road/2 neutral site. There is also the annual exhibition game vs New Brunswick. More than likely the teams brought in will be ECAC and/or AHC squads. There is an outside chance of Michigan State but I wouldn't hold my breath.

That looks promising. It would be nice if they could breakup the UNH games and stay away from midweek games this year.

That and playing games in the neighborhood. Most of those guys grew up on the same street.

Someone on a Colgate thread has the Maine @ Colgate weekend as Oct 28/29 (Friday/Saturday) - do you know it's 29/30, or is that an error?
