Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

Now they will consider Portland, Maine......a decade too late.

A decade ago Portland wasn't in any condition to host. Now it is. I doubt the ECAC is going to be in a hurry to host in Albany again.

1) Extend the commuter rail to Manchester. Have the Northeast Regional rotate between Portland, Manchester and Worcester.
2) Have the East regional rotate between Bridgeport, Providence and Lake Placid.
3) Implement the scheduling changes I've outlined in another thread.
4) ???
5) Profit.

OK, the commuter rail thing is a pipe dream, but the rest is doable.

Lake Placid would be great! I think I'd have to make that trip. I doubt attendance would be very good though, so booking hotels wouldn't be difficult.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

have to ask as I can't remember.

Was Maine ever interested in Jim Montgomery? If so, did he decline? And if they weren't interested in him, why not? Personally, I just don't see Gendron being the answer.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

He was the board favorite as successor to Timmy for years because of his obvious connection and success in Dubuque.

When they finally moved on TW it was later than Denvers opening. Monty said publically the AD at the time never called him....there was debate at the time as to whose job it is to call who when a job is open (send in an application maybe??).....generally the inneundo was that Maine wasnt interested because of some personal stuff and the rest was just posturing.

That and jimmy makes way more money than Red

OUCH!! Well Maine sure was hoping for it. But as noted from the reply's - the school, well water under the bridge now.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

The striking diff to me is the lack of incredible, instinctive, acrobatic goaltending, along with our inability to bury pucks like these teams can. Natural goal scoring cant be taught, its innate, either you have it or you don't.

To me it was the lack of time from when someone got the puck to when he did something with it, either shot, or made a pass. No fumbling around trying to control it, no taking an extra second to decide what and where he was going with it, no fiddling and diddling around with it just to shoot it into someone's shinpads, just, it's on his stick, and then it's gone. So many no-look or dump the puck to an area where their team-mate was skating to, ready to pick it up, so many guys moving to open space ready to receive that pass, it was just beautiful to see.

People on the ice knowing where their teammate was gonna be, and able to get the puck to them.

I would love to go to a regional in Lake Placid. The FF I went to there in 1988 was the best FF I've ever been to. Just an absolute blast all weekend.

Yeah, but would he have taken less to come back to Maine? Should have at least had the chance to find out. But as with everything at Maine, day late and a dollar short.

Why would anyone take less to come back to Maine? Jimmy used his Maine connection to get DU off the pot and hire him. No doubt about the day late and dollar short. The U blew it in 2002, they went against there own rules and didn't have a Natl search.

Shurely a special place. All hockey fans should experience and just go visit the herb Brooks rink.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

Greetings, Maineiacs!
I hope you don't mind a non-hockey question, but next week I (and some comrades) redeploy home via Bangor (one night's stay). I expect we'll have an afternoon & evening to enjoy, and I want to steer the group northward to see the area around campus, and perhaps get a puck for my collection. I thought this might be a good place to ask for restaurant/pub suggestions.
It's an Air Force crowd, so fine dining is not on the menu - due to the cost, not because of our manners. Pubcrawling is more our métier.

If you are going to Orono go to Pats for a real hockey fan experience. Place is perfect for a bunch of Air Force guys, there are some brew pubs right near by also

Thanks, sounds perfect!
The guy who first got me hooked on college hockey was a huge Black Bears fan, stationed at Loring AFB in the 1980s. That's why Maine always has a fan in me. I look forward to seeing Alfond, the mystical land of the 42-1-2 Black Bears. A hockey pilgrimage, if you will.

If you find yourself in Bangor, I recommend Geaghan's Pub. Great food and great local brew.

Make sure you get pizza at pats. Were you at loring? Loring is a ghost town now but it's still cold! You guys will get a warm welcome in bangor.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

Another great place in Bangor is Hero's located on Washington St. where they have plenty of large screen TV's, a great menu and a wide selection of beers. Oh, if the owner is there he probably wouldn't mind talking hockey with you since he's the Bangor High School varsity hockey coach and former player himself. Now a question for you, who is going to get Red's job, and I'm not referring to Gendron?

Beauty, thanks!

Never at Loring myself. It closed in 1994, too early for me to get there. My USAF career began on 01 May 93 - just four weeks after Maine beat Lake State in Milwaukee.
Although my maternal grandfather grew up in Caribou, circa 1910. Potato farm.

The regulars on the Michigan thread are WAY more knowledgeable on this than me. I had thought Mel Pearson would be the guy (former Michigan Asst. Coach), but Michigan Tech extended his coaching contract through the 2020-21 season.
