Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

I was reading the announcement about Greg Carvel being named the new UMass hockey coach. Came across season ticket prices for UMass. $165.00 and $150.00 for faculty staff and senior citizens. Maine's $340.00 is way out of line. Good hire for UMass by the way.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

I'm amazed at how poor the attendance is at all the games this weekend. Even in St Paul, hockey country.

It's the ridiculous ticket prices IMO. Last I checked Albany wanted $80 for a weekend pass; it's probably more now... That dissuades the casual fans, and even the hard-core fans who don't have a dog in the hunt (such as myself). The NCAA really needs to rethink things, especially now that every single Regional game is on one ESPN or another. Charge, say, $12.50/game and get the arenas half-full.

Make sure you get pizza at pats. Were you at loring? Loring is a ghost town now but it's still cold! You guys will get a warm welcome in bangor.

Yep. none of the other franchise locations come close to the original Pat's for good pizza.

The franchises are Pat's in name only. They are pretenders of the worst sort. And you have to go downstairs for your pizza at Pat's. Upstairs just isn't the same thing.

They have to use the same sauce, after that they can use whatever other ingredients they want

Dough is the heart of any pizza, and the dough at the Pat's pretenders just isn't the same.

dough recipe is the same, however ovens differ and some owners cook at a different temp/time. I also know some locations used whatever flour their local food distributor sells them at a good price so that can differ, and also different shortening - the original used to use lard, but I think they may have changed that. They franchise agreement doesn't dictate suppliers or brands of ingredients. Even the tomato sauce used as the base for the pizza sauce can differ from location to location (they all use the same pre-mixed pizza sauce seasoning packets, which only a few people know the contents of) I used to occasionally get pizza from Hampden and I always had to request "well done" because they weren't cooking their pizzas enough. Some Pat's also leave too much "crust" showing around the edge (a Pat's pizza sauce and cheese is supposed to go almost all the way to the edge). My in-laws used to own a Pat's (which they sold and is now closed). Their pizza was very close, and it's kind of annoying getting Pat's from anywhere but Orono because my wife is super critical and complains about everything that is wrong with it.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

got my hockey east ticket refund. Much faster than last season. I don't even know why I bothered with the option since I knew I'd just end up getting it back!

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

Greetings, Maineiacs!
I hope you don't mind a non-hockey question, but next week I (and some comrades) redeploy home via Bangor (one night's stay). I expect we'll have an afternoon & evening to enjoy, and I want to steer the group northward to see the area around campus, and perhaps get a puck for my collection. I thought this might be a good place to ask for restaurant/pub suggestions.
It's an Air Force crowd, so fine dining is not on the menu - due to the cost, not because of our manners. Pubcrawling is more our métier.

As was mentioned, get a pizza at Pat's. Also try some local beer, Woodman's, Orono Brewing Company, and Bear Brew Pub are all near Pat's. Blaze in downtown Bangor has a decent line of taps (lots of craft beers, 50+ on tap and bottle), but their food won't be cheap like Pat's.

The same reason people overpay their taxes and are happy to get a huge refund check every April :p

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

Guess its time to make a stop into Pat's, all this talk of it leaves me hungry.

Conor Riley with Adirondack Thunder ECHL - not sure if this old news but just heard it.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

I used to think Pat's Pizza was great. Then I discovered Angelo's in Old Town. There's no comparison in my opinion.

Thanks again! Sounds like some more great places. I'm looking forward to Tuesday, and to enjoying non-Turkish beer!

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

Got any idea what time you fly in?
Not exactly, but anticipating a morning takeoff (0100-0200 Maine time), which puts us down by 1200-1300 local. I'll need about a minute to get out and kiss the ground, then we're just a little paperwork/room check-in/rental car away from our merry perambulations.
With groups like this (all thrust and no vector), it's usually the guy who has something of a plan in mind who chooses the first destination. That's why all your advice here is so helpful! I've got folks who never heard of Pat's looking forward to pizza - but only from the original in Orono (and from downstairs, not up)!

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine is excited to announce the replacement of the fighting Black Bears with a return to the Elephants.

From 1903-14, the elephant was a regular on the football sidelines. Because it's important to never forget, UMaine is honoring its legacy by introducing the new logo.

The new elephant logo stands for Maine's strength and work ethic, and will be worn proudly by University of Maine athletes.

Go Maine! Go Blue! Go Elephants!
