Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

Okay they play 4 games in the next 3 weeks and still have to work on the PP and on continuity offensively and now people are complaining why Nyquist was playing? He is playing because he is a hockey player! Yeah the game at the end got a bit ugly and it was nice to see Corkum scrap it up with a USA player but Gus took a bit of a cheap shot and was ticked about it. Pryor either reinjured his hip or it was a concussion. He did it to himself as no one was on him and he went into the boards to play the puck and it seemed to be an innocent play but he fell and could not get up.

Was quite impressed with Swavely, and Nyquist was great feeding the puck. Maine was lethargic until US scored and they realized they were in a hockey game! Mangene, who I am a big fan of, showed why he should be a forward as he got turned around a couple of times! Looks like Sirman is definitely the off man out in net despite decent play this year, did not dress and sat in stands with a friend and not in game sweats like the few other Maine players who did not dress. Beattie also must be in the dog house, which is unfortunate as I think the kid can play, but for whatever reason he can't stay in the line-up. Though have to say I expected more from him and he has gotten PP tie and still not produced.

Ouellette was steady in net, and there is no question our goaltending situation is much better than the last 3 years!

Was quite impressed with Swavely!

Yes! He looked like a difference maker out there this afternoon. He has wheels, and is an innate scorer with plenty of room and potential for improvement. Really loved his game, and was thrilled to see him knock that goal home. He earned it.

This year's freshman class hasn't been tearing it up on the scoreboard yet, but they look like they could turn into a consistent, reliable, balanced class.

Corkie and Anthoine love to play Bash Brothers, which is something this team desperately needs. They ought to be able to back it up with some goals as their years progress. Swavely looks like the emerging playmaker of the class. Amestoy can FLY and plays with heart and tenacity.

O'Connor....lovin' him. Big time. Loved when he stepped up and made another big hit when his boys were on the receiving end of some chippy ones. If his game turns into one that Tim can't live without, then he can make those plays more often without fear of being benched! Not unlike Prestin Ryan, but quite unlike Ryan Hegarty.

And the goalies have been serviceable, and could both, easily, turn into extremely effective NCAA starters.

One of the quietly effective guys today was Theo...which is good...when he is healthy he is an important player for us. Twice he made great heads up plays, rushing back and turning to play defense to prevent odd man rushes when our D pinched and lost. He also made some good possesion plays in the corners.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

It sounds like a lot of regular posters here weren't there, so here's the real deal that might not appear in a box score or game summary:

I don't know if Maine was hungover/travel-weary/thinking they could play down to the competition, but they got spun around for about the 1st 10 minutes. They were outshot something like 8-3 out of the gate and U-18 cashed in a PP goal.

Maine woke up. Outshot them 10-4 for the rest of the period. Cornell and Flynn got goals and they left the period with a lead.

Throughout the 1st and 2nd, U-18 frequently took a few passive aggressive 'extra liberties'....made some contact barely within reasonable time of possession....just a lot of plays where: if we were playing UNH, this **** wouldn't fly. But, I thought Maine maintained composure for the MOST part and didn't get too reactionary. Joey was Joey for 1 after the whistle scrum, but by and large they held it together.

As it continued in the 3rd and the score got farther away, enough was enough, and many of our guys...namely: Banwell, O'Connor, O'Neill, Corkie and Joey started giving it back to them. I really felt they were rightfully doing so. They let a lot of **** go all game, but they hurt Pryor and shook up Gus, and you know what? Don't play like an ******* if you don't want retaliation. LOVED when Kelen got up under that kids mask.

I don't think I've ever seen a game where THREE players from the same team got 5 minute majors at seperate times for incidents that weren't fighting in the pros. And this is supposed to be the cream of the crop talent representing our country in their age bracket, most of whom are 8 or 9 months away from playing collegiately themselves.

I've seen these squads play almost every year for a long time, and I've never seen a group that I'd be embarrassed to support if they played like that in international play. That was pathetic behavior, and I thought Maine did a great job keeping their actions in check until enough was enough.

Brightest spots of the night: Swavely....Marty had some aggressive quality saves including a flat out breakaway....both Cornell and Van Dyk scored very pretty goals and we could use more of that from the back. I think they make a good pairing, and I had almost 'had it' with Josh until he teamed up with Mikey.

I wanna see those wheels against D1 competition... and i wanna see bash brothers against good D1 competition.

wanna see what Stollery does to Amestoy when Maine plays Merrimack (IF MC puts Stollery out against Amestoy's line)

In the pregame with Mahoney they said that Beattie took a puck to the foot and was being held out of that game.

Maine is 10-0-3 in it's last 13 games in Portland and has defeated the Under 18 team all 7 times they have faced them. Thanks to all who were there for the update. That game got really nasty at the end according to all reports. Attendance was listed at 2500 in the BDN.

Give him time, mon frere (Swavely). He is a true freshman, and not one who is coming onto the scene with raving accolaydes. He's only dressed for 5 games on the 4th line so far....He's still in a: find some rhythm and confidence stage of his college career. He'll get there.

As for the other:
Well, Kelen for one, has only seen 5 games as well. They both have played physically in every game they've dressed for, but Anthoine, who has dressed for 16 games, always seems to amp up his energy when Kelen is with him. Seems like they're buddies who push each other, which is great.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

Sounds like Dims should be back for the Mack game. I don't want to frequently match him up with DaCosta in his 1st game back, and I also want to give Swavely more of an opportunity to excel. Mangene should return to forward by the looks of the portland game.

I'd go...

Flynn, House, Nyquist
Abbott, Dee, Diamond
Amestoy, Mangene, Swavely
--Shemansky is more realistic, but who can skate with that line? That's a matchup nightmare for 2nd and 3rd pairings on speed alone!
Andersson, Corkum, Anthoine
--Andersson to be the steady hand behind the energy those two can bring together. Perfect 4th line for this team.

O'Neill/Banwell
Cornell/Van Dyk
Dimmen/Nemec

Maine #15 in the PWR......they need a win at #17 Merrimack!!!

Fat chance, although maybe MC has been off for awhile,so Maine can sneak up on them. Imagine thinking that Maine has to sneak up on MC:rolleyes:

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

50-50 chance.

I think Maine wins this game.

Even though it was just an exhibition game, I feel like Sunday's game was something the doctor ordered. We know they have skill and speed, but they had been awfully flat.

Games like that one are great for team unity, and they really drive you. They ought to know that they're on the outside looking in right now, despite pre-season expectations. They're getting their defensive captain back, and before Florida they had almost 3 weeks off to rest up the dings and scrapes.

Like I said before: Andersson looked as good as he has in quite some time, Joey looked good, Tanner and Gus looked more effective passing than they had in a while-- these are guys who have been dinged.

I'll say 4-2 Maine.

R U sure that Dimmen is going to be back ?? He may not be ready...........Why risk bringing him too early........there is enough depth on D for the time being......

Merrimack beat Army 2-1 in O.T. Thursday and then beat RIT 5-3 on Saturday

Maybe Attendence will be better next year,as they play a out of Conference game Vs. Clarkson @ Portland.

Takes care of sneaking up:). Not shocked Dimmen isn't coming back against MC, why risk it. Their is only 1 game, let him rest and rehab another 2 weeks

Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

Looks like there may be a snowstorm to make things interesting at the end of the week. I hope it doesn't get postponed, I'm looking forward to this game.
