Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

Timmay's post game interview...."we're going to ramp it up in practice this week"......lolololol. Also...."a great chance to knockoff BC at Conte".....nny

I think he is just comparing next week's chance to knock off BC at Conte compared to this week's and last week's chances.

Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

Just a side note..I was glancing at the schedule and noticed that Maine is hosting UMass Lowell on February 3rd at 7:00pm...(Super Bowl Starts at 6:30)..Over/Under 2,000 fans?

WAAAAY under, if the Pats are playing.

Everyone who is paying attention expects UML to torch Maine, anyway... Why see that mess, and miss all the booze and eats to boot?

Fun with spreadsheets... pay no attention to the first slide... it's simply the data set which, when uploaded to google docs, was not formatted to show all of the data

The bar chart with lack of post season success is really telling. I can guarantee you that 2013 will look a lot like 2008, 2009, 2011. IOW ....blank...zero...naddah. Do we see a trend here?

Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

So I guess more attention needs to be paid for the facilities than the product that plays in those facilities?

I'll give the team this, they looked like they were trying hard. But they're either so lacking in talent, or skill, fundamental breakout and offensive zone plans, or all of the above, that they just can't do anything with the puck. There were times where Merrimack would keep them bottled up in their own end for the better part of a minute before they could get the puck out over the blueline. Late in the game when they were on the powerplay, one Merrimack forechecker kept the puck tied up along the boards against two Maine players for probably 15-20 seconds. And Maine had the man advantage!!

The offensive zone is just as bad. Dump into the corners, hack at the puck try to get it to another Maine player, finally get control, back to the point, dump it in the corner, throw it to the midle, hack and scrap at it some more. Jeez, it's like watching a bunch of young kids who've never played the game before.

Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

The entire University of Maine athletic program makes me want to puke.

Does Cosgrove have a contract yet? 2 more weeks until signing day.

Does Abbott think about anything other than shiny new facilities?

Whitehead and Woodward...........they must just chuckle every time that they get home knowing that they have the best 6 figure jobs in the state. Automatic contract extensions, no set athletic goals to achieve, no one to answer to.............wow.

Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

A couple of rambling observations and a question:

When did Grant leave? I can't help but wonder if we'll win another game this year. Some of the personnel decisions this weekend were mind-boggling to put it mildly. The way the Alfond was rocking for a minute after Diamonds goal at the end of the second, and we almost tied it up just after, you don't find that fan enthusiasm anywhere. Too bad this team doesn't give them more to cheer about.

Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

One thing about this team at home, get comfy on the coach and before you know it, its in the 3rd and you didn't get frustrated as you missed it all sleeping.

When are they going to learn that dump and watch doesn't work?

just out of curiosity, did anyone else notice how many times Timmy pulled out the whiteboard to show the boys what MC was doing over the weekend and plays that would take advantage of MC weaknesses?

also... has anyone else noticed the umbrella that Timmy is using on the powerplay? As far as I understand it, the umbrella is most effective when one of the 3 high players crashes down, unexpectedly... But, under Timmy's plan, nobody ever crashes, so all Maine has is 3 high (I guess to prevent the Abbottesque turnover at the point and the odd man break away) and, therefore the umbrella gives Maine no offensive threat.

If anything, that understates current trends.

Zeroing axes is never wrong, per se, but it can understate the magnitude of change. Something that I guarantee any university administrator knows all about :)

I'd set minimum y axis values to the lowest observed value in the time series (or maybe a hair below the lowest observed value). Then the trends will really pop.

Nice work. I'd like to see a Slide 10. The graph of the financial performance of the Hockey Program for the same periods of time. I'll bet it mirrors graphs 2-6 almost exactly. They're screwed leaving this guy at the helm.

Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

Cause if he just keeps working at it, and doing the same things he has been, but just tighten up a little here, and just a little more effort there, success is just around the corner.

you want to see, on the same slide, salaries going this way and ticket revenue going the other.
(and make sure to adjust the salary for the local cost of living... I do not want to hear that Jerry York or Mark Dennehy make "X" while timmy makes "Y"... A house in Bangor costs about half to a third of what Dennehy's house costs..)

$190K in penobscot county is certainly top 1%, while $190 in andover or boston is probably about top 45%.

Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

The University is looking at expanding the Alfond??? They can't fix the PIT but are looking at making the Alfond bigger? What is going on Priceless?

Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

Went to B.U.-UMass Lowell last night. 4-3 UML and it wasn't that close. UML skates well, passes very well, has snipers (#29-Arnold-had a beautiful goal) and has good/very good goaltending. They controlled the puck and controlled the play very well and it was a fun game to watch. They move the puck, they link passes, they play with purpose, they go into Jack Parker Rink and play with speed and confidence and win. UML has won 9 in a row, including Providence and now BU. To be fair, they've also lost all 5 games against BC and UNH so far this season. If they don't peak too early, they will be a major headache for someone come playoff time, both H.E. and NCAA. The team we saw last night will Smoke the Black Bears.

Of more interest, we sat behind 5 UML guys, 4 of whom played hockey there. And played for...you guessed it...Tim Whitehead. Either as assistant coach or head coach. When we found this out, it was like being Mike Wallace or Scott Pelle or something. Hammered them with questions. They all 4 positively confirmed what is written in this thread every day... doesn't relate to the players real well, passive style, a disciplinarian and ballbreaker for wrong reasons, mediocre communicator. This is first hand info from 4 guys who played a total of 13 seasons for the guy. An actuary would call that a statistically viable sample.

So if Maine Hockey is satisfied with less-than-mediocrity, a 5-14-4 record, ZERO wins at Alfond thru January, last place in Hockey East (1/9/4), a very high probability of not making the H.E. playoffs; if we agree with the Oceanography Professor Sizzlecheeks from the Athletic Advisory Board, then Yes Whitehead is exactly the coach we want. If we want a return to prominence and a consistently superior performance, then A.D. Abbott has to swallow hard, buy out the last year of this guy's contract, do it swiftly and confidently, and find a new top quality coach that FITS. This is a huge task, it's doable, but that's what Abbott gets paid to do. If this doesn't happen, then I fear that the severe tailspin we are now enduring will make the program irreparable. Timmy's gotta go. It ain't gonna ever turn around under his "leadership". Plain and simple.

TF on Arnold, who kicked him to the curb? Timmay, I'd bet any money he wouldn't be a sniper if he played in Orono so congrats to him

You say it would a huge task to get rid of Timmay at the conclusion of the seaon. I have to disagree. I think its a very lucrative position and there would be no shortage of qualified candidates. At the very least with little expenditure by the University, that guy named Montgomery I believe would fill that bill in spades, and he's one of probably 3 or 4 other excellent candidates available, all of whom should be interviewed. All it takes is Abbott to do the right thing now for the University, its alumni and the state of Maine. I, for one, am sick of seeing Whiteheads smug face in interviews....enough talking, lets get it done.
