Really? I had no idea...but at least the rest of my post is correct, right?

Probably not, but who cares.

Harvard blasts BU in the Beanpot. You better believe crazy Jack will have the redmen in rare form for the Alfond. Expect BU to roll over the hapless Bears in Orono and further cementing Timmays demise.

Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

Not to defend the misadministration, but where exactly do you think all this money is going to appear? The forestry department is good, but I don't think they've developed any money-growing trees yet.

there seem to be about 3000 empty seats at 20 games... that is $1.2M right there... and not everyone slithers his way into games and the Dexter Lounge for free, like you former "members" of the '93 team... some of us would gladly pay for FOMH special memberships... amounting to a least $500 per family per season....PLUS start going back to the banquets an buying all sorts of silly auction items.

that is just a start for where the money can come from.
Dennehy is active in Andover like Walsh WAS.... he gets people interested in the program... the little people.. the ones who cheer at Merrimack games.... not just zillionaire heirs of deceased humanitarians

Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

Maine has chosen to "compete" in all 4 major sports (football, basketball, hockey and baseball) when it can only afford to realistically compete (I mean REALLY compete ) in just 1 or 2.

Personally, I think that they need to go to the Vermont model and drop football, baseball and softball........and funnel money into hockey and basketball. Fire both Whitehead and Woodward and start fresh. It's a good time to do it. People (ie. Maine taxpayers) will accept the fact that UMaine can no longer afford the luxury of a broad based sports program due to the economic struggles of the last decade. The donors may not like it but unless they plan on opening their wallets A LOT more..........tough sh*t!

Hockey will get the Alfond back next season and they could hire an exciting coach to get their season ticket base back up and hopefully, more sellouts will become common place again. The basketball programs will play in a shiny new facility in Bangor.......would be a good time for them to start fresh as well. In Maine's cold climate, these are the 2 sports that it makes most sense (and cents) to concentrate on. The status quo will not be acceptable........unless new magical revenue streams open up, judgement day IS coming to the UM athletic dept!

I really hate that basketball is moving to Bangor. I was very much looking forward to basketball returning to a renovated PIT.

Cough up about $10 mil and they'll renovate it for you.

I for one can't stand the Pit (an apt name!) and look forward to seeing games in a modern comfortable arena. Sadly, I won't even have a reason to venture up to (B)orono any more............

Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

Math is hard.

There are 18 home games this season. Average PAID attendance is 4206. Capacity is 5124 (which seems awfully low, but whatever). The 82.1% of capacity puts Maine ahead of Michigan, BU and Wisconsin, BTW.
Not every one of the 918 seats that go unsold are of the $50 variety. There are 1198 $50 seats in Alfond Arena. Knowing that this weekend was BU, and that might skew the numbers just a tad, I used the numbers for the Northeastern game on the Friday night at the end of the regular season. For the sake of argument, we'll take the numbers as they stand today and assume the athletics department won't sell another seat.

Of the 1198 seats, 300 remain available. Since an average of 918 seats go unsold at every home game, we can assume there are 618 $23 seats available. That's $525,852, not $1.2M. The university is more than happy to take your money whether you show up at the game or not. They would prefer you showed up and spent money on concessions, but they aren't going to lose any sleep over it. They'll just tell students the funds they put on their MaineCards are no longer usable at Alfond Arena.

I realize it's easy to take shots at zillionaire heirs of deceased humanitarians, but they also write the checks that pay for things like trips to Notre Dame and Estero. I'm sure that if any of you want to write those checks with lots of zeros, the coach, the AD and the president of the school will be more than happy to schmooze the hell out of you. Speaking of, where is His VIPness? This was supposed to be pocket change to him...

Look, the athletics department is rudderless. It really has been since Sue Tyler left - and it can be argued that we haven't had a real AD since Kevin White. They are funded miserably and given resources that would be laughable if they weren't so pathetic. They are desperate to find new revenue streams, hence $10 parking and a crappy internet video feed you have to pay to watch. They don't seem to care if they price people out of the market. $50 seats? Ridiculous. But if they sell 900 a game they are doing something right. Personally, I think the business model blows chunks, but I only got a B- in ECO 121 so I'll assume their bean counters know better.

What about on-line and mail-order retail sales??? Those t-shirts and ball caps must be selling like hot cakes now! What about the finite ad dollars in Greater Bangor that will now find their way down I-95 to the Cross Center and Waterfront Concerts??? What about the concession revenue that they are losing with the 17.9% drop in attendance.

Your let-them-eat-cake piece was cute..........but the University of Maine is a PUBLIC UNIVERSITY. So unless the zillionaire heirs are gonna pony enough money to privatize the athletic department.........someone is gonna have to answer to the public as to why every program sucks so much now.......and have for quite some time. Not to mention why these failures keep getting contract extensions??????

Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

i thought you had me on ignore?

so... now they get rid of 2000 seats and you tell me that 81% of capacity is a good thing?

maybe they should just get rid of another 1500 seats

I wouldn't put it past them........they only need 1% of current capacity.

Like Kirk Ferentz at Iowa? Sorry, but the average taxpayer doesn't give a crap who the coach of the sports teams at the state university are. As I have argued in other threads, this forum doesn't even come close to representing a reasonable snapshot of society. Most of us have college degrees or better, make much more than average and are in tune with the happenings at the universities or colleges (especially hockey - a sport the public doesn't care about by a wide margin) much more than the average person. I wonder if there was a poll taken of Mainers how many people would know Paul Ferguson is the president of the university and Tim Whitehead is the coach of the hockey team. People might know Steve Abbott because of his political history. As for privatizing the athletics department, we're heading that way anyway as state budgets get tighter around the country.

I never realized the Alfond held over 7100 people. When was this? As I recall, capacity was around 5600, then they put in the boxes at the ends between sections P and A. That means capacity dropped 500, not 2000. It seems math is really hard for some people.

Oh, and KIA, I do have you on ignore. Much as I have lobbied to have the ignore feature enhanced so if people quote you it would still be ignored, USCHO hasn't added that functionality yet. I'll keep trying.

W-T-F are you talking about Clueless? What does Kirk Ferentz have to do with my post??? People are wondering why UM teams suck so much and why the failing coaches of these programs keep getting contract extensions.......????

Again.......W-T-F Clueless??? Are you on drugs?

1% refers to THE 1% (as in zillionaires, billionaires, and millionaires)........dunce. Try and keep up.

Kirk Ferentz is the football coach at a public university, whose team constantly underachieves and yet he keeps getting extensions. Yet the public doesn't seem to be in an uproar for an explanation. Likewise, here in Maine there hasn't been an outcry for changes at UMaine. Granted, there has been on this thread, but again, this forum doesn't even come close to representing the average citizen of Maine.

Also, my comment about the capacity of Alfond was aimed at the post you quoted. The poster seemed to be of the impression that the university has removed 2000 seats, which would place capacity above 7100. I don't recall when the capacity of Alfond Arena was that high...

I remember Krik Ferentz, used to be friends with his son in elementary school. Went to a bunch of birthday parties over there. What is he up to these days?

What's the chance of fans cobbling together the 191k for a buyout and bringing Jim M. on? If all the fans who stopped going to the games put some cash together etc etc etc..
Otherwise I see Tim finishing out his contract.

I read an article recently that Kirk's job is in jeopardy. Appears the locals have had enough of his mediocre to poor performances. Kind of like timmay in that regard.I think Maine misses the playoffs again, as unimaginable as that is, and his contract is bought out. Its now obvious the BC weekend was an absolute freak of nature. His time has come and gone. Well, actually his time never came in the first place. :D

Whitehead said he is toying with the idea of moving sophomore defenseman Jake Rutt up front.
Yeah, take maybe your best defenseman and move him to forward. Good move, TIMMAY.

“I’m very comfortable with the team’s attitude. Everyone is very hungry. We know every second of every game is important. We’ve got to keep fighting,” Higgins added.
Which is why you got outshot 32-10 the last two periods at Vermont. Put up quite the fight.

“It’s a tough conference. You aren’t going to win every game,” said junior right wing Jon Swavely. “We know what we need to do to get into the playoffs. We’ve got to work harder. We’ve got to take a page out of Vermont’s book this weekend [with a better work ethic].”

yes, we know. But can you at least win more than you lose? And what's this about having to work harder? I thought we were hearing all about this "working harder" thing a few weeks ago? My how quickly they forget the "lessons learned". A constant refrain from TIMMAY's teams.

“We’re 6-4-3 since Christmas. We’ll bounce back,” said Whitehead.
Jesus, he's delusional. Just saying it doesn't make it so, TIMMAY.

.

I can't imagine moving Rutt , the only guy who will whack someone on a consistent basis. I'm not sure what that would accomplish. If you want to move him up on the PP I say give it a try but to move him to forward? that's just odd

Well so is Whitehead.

Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

I'm sure if he moves Rutt to forward, TIMMAY will make sure the defense is covered by moving Shemansky back there.

Re: Maine 2012-13 Part 3D: Still digging

Move Rutt to forward. Okay, you are chittin me. I was just thinking against Vermont he's the one guy I really like watching on the blue line. And hes a Mainer. Geezus H Christ, tell me that dope Whitehead wont do something so stupid. Oh wait, sure he will. Its obvious Whitey know nothing about hockey.
