Math is hard.
There are 18 home games this season. Average PAID attendance is 4206. Capacity is 5124 (which seems awfully low, but whatever). The 82.1% of capacity puts Maine ahead of Michigan, BU and Wisconsin, BTW.
Not every one of the 918 seats that go unsold are of the $50 variety. There are 1198 $50 seats in Alfond Arena. Knowing that this weekend was BU, and that might skew the numbers just a tad, I used the numbers for the Northeastern game on the Friday night at the end of the regular season. For the sake of argument, we'll take the numbers as they stand today and assume the athletics department won't sell another seat.
Of the 1198 seats, 300 remain available. Since an average of 918 seats go unsold at every home game, we can assume there are 618 $23 seats available. That's $525,852, not $1.2M. The university is more than happy to take your money whether you show up at the game or not. They would prefer you showed up and spent money on concessions, but they aren't going to lose any sleep over it. They'll just tell students the funds they put on their MaineCards are no longer usable at Alfond Arena.
I realize it's easy to take shots at zillionaire heirs of deceased humanitarians, but they also write the checks that pay for things like trips to Notre Dame and Estero. I'm sure that if any of you want to write those checks with lots of zeros, the coach, the AD and the president of the school will be more than happy to schmooze the hell out of you. Speaking of, where is His VIPness? This was supposed to be pocket change to him...
Look, the athletics department is rudderless. It really has been since Sue Tyler left - and it can be argued that we haven't had a real AD since Kevin White. They are funded miserably and given resources that would be laughable if they weren't so pathetic. They are desperate to find new revenue streams, hence $10 parking and a crappy internet video feed you have to pay to watch. They don't seem to care if they price people out of the market. $50 seats? Ridiculous. But if they sell 900 a game they are doing something right. Personally, I think the business model blows chunks, but I only got a B- in ECO 121 so I'll assume their bean counters know better.
