LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

If the Lakers can play with the same tempo that they played the overtime period against Northern, they have a shot of moving up in the rankings before the end of the season. It was exciting to see them firing shots at the net. The Laker netminder could use some help from the D to prevent some of opposing offense. Good luck at Ferris!

It's the last series of the regular season so they need at least 2 points at Ferris to move ahead of Bemidji. Even then they'll need help from Minnesota State who plays Bemidji this weekend.

And the Alaska teams pay a lot of that. I heard that the WCHA now wants the Alaska schools to pay for hotel rooms as well. Sigh. However, air fare is a lot cheaper right now with oil prices so low, we booked a flight to Colorado for half of what we used to pay. That should be helping costs.

Alaska teams pay about half of that.

The WCHA and referees are clearly against head coach Damon Whitten and the good ship Laker.

Great article by Randy Russon in www.hockeynewsnorth.com on the LSSU Lakers clinching a playoff spot with their BIG weekend against Northern Michigan. http://www.hockeynewsnorth.com/ncaa/lakers-heading-to-the-playoffs/

A three-point weekend has secured a playoff spot for the Lake Superior State Lakers and assured them of at least seventh place in the 10-team Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Playing at home, the Lakers upended fourth-place Northern Michigan 3-1 and then erased a 2-0 deficit to hold the Wildcats to a 2-2 tie.

The three points boost the Lakers WCHA record to 9-12-5 with two games to play in the regular season, both at Ferris State against the fifth-place Bulldogs next weekend.

The Lakers are two points back of sixth-place Bemidji State Beavers.

All 10 WCHA teams have two games to play in the regular season.

Freshman defenseman Owen Headrick of Garden River First Nation had assists in both weekend games for the Lakers and is sixth in team scoring with 4 goals, 7 assists, 11 points in 34 games.

Headrick, who has been playing with a sore back for the past several weeks, earned praise from Lakers head coach Damon Whitten following Saturday’s 2-2 tie.

“He’s playing the way we need him to play,” Whitten said of the freshman blue-liner, who is returning to full strength from his back ailment.

Whitten also gave full credit to the Lakers for overcoming the 2-0 deficit and gaining the 2-2 tie on Saturday.

“We stood with it,” Whitten told play-by-play announcer Bill Crawford on the Yes-FM post-game radio show.

Overall, through 36 games this season, the Lakers have a record of 12-19-5 under second-year coach Whitten.

How are the officials against the Lakers? The PPs were 4-3 on Friday & 5-2 on Saturday, both in favor of LSSU. There were a couple missed calls on both sides over the weekend. But neither team really gained any advantage from the stripes.

It appears former Laker Kellen Lain is unhappy. The Iowa Wild attempted to send him down to the ECHL Quad City Mallards. He didn't report and was placed on the suspended list. He is now ineligible to play. Interesting to note that last year he was traded from Utica to Oklahoma City for former LSSU teammate Will Acton, who is now in Germany having a really good year in the DEL.

You can not allow a team like Ferris to take 52 shots at you. Ferris is not a top team and will not being going anywhere when the regular season ends except to the tournament and they will not win that. I can see a top team getting shots like that against the Lakers but Ferris, come on .

I watched the game in person and I highly doubt that ferris had 52 shots.

I did like the way the Lakers played tonight but they do have to work on getting the puck to the net.

Watching on the web stream, I did think Ferris carried the play, but as you said, it is doubtful they had 52 shots on goal. Could have easily been counting blocked shots by the defense to the shots total, and it would be more believable.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Well it's looking like this. We win tonight, we finish 6th (unless Bemidij stuns Mankato) and go to Bowling Green. We lose, we finish 7th and go to Michigan Tech. I would rather go to Bowling Green as we have had better success there than at Tech recently.

There's the slight chance we could go to Mankato if they lose and Tech wins again, but I think they put another whooping on Bemdiji State.

I missed most of the game last night. What kind of injury did Renz suffer? Did it sound serious enough that it's likely he will miss tonight's game? I assume Roll is on the trip and will play if Renz isn't able to.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Bowling Green must be saying ouch this morning after giving up 7 goals to Huntsville . If the Nationals were held today, not one WCHA team would be there . Mi. Tech is rated 17th on the power rankings. It is a good thing the winner of the tournament gets in regardless of the power rankings. We will have one team at least from the conference that will be going .

I listened to the game, and was not aware that Renz was hurt until Crawford said that he had come up to sit in the press box to watch the rest of the game. He said it was a lower body injury, similar to Macardle. Roll and Patterson are the extras on the trip.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

We could really use your help tonight. Since we didn't help ourselves. Please and thank you?

Yeah, it would be nice to see both the Lakers and Northern end the regular season with a win. That would lead to the best case scenario for all 3 UP teams having a chance to make it to Grand Rapids.

Every time we (and everyone else) goes to Ferris the shot count is way off. You would think they would fix that one of these years? It's not that difficult to count shots in a hockey game. No way they had 52 in that game.

The funny thing is, you think you would want to count more shots against you as well, in order to pad your own goalie's stats.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

One of next season's recruits has completed play this season. Brayden Gelsinger wound up with 25G and 36A for 61 pts playing for Victoria in the BCHL. He was the leading scorer on a so-so team that didn't quite make the BCHL playoffs.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

I heard the New York Times ran an article on college hockey and said breaking up the WCHA and CCHA was a bad idea. It reported the travel cost have gone way up and the fans miss the old rivals. Also said Big Ten attendance is down since the league was formed. Miami and Western have to fly just about everywhere now and the cost just isn't working.

I think there will be another major re-alignment within the next 5 years. I heard the WCHA championship weekend has not been profitable the first 2 years of the nWCHA.
