LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Nice win for the Lakers. They needed to get some points this weekend and they've done that. Would be great to see them get a sweep tomorrow night but it's going to be a real challenge. Game winner for Jake Hand; I think he's going to be more of a fixture in the lineup now.

A very nice win for the Lakers. Northern did not play very bad at all.

Hand seems to be playing with more confidence and Cuglietta is coming on as well.

No doubt! Gordie was a little bit better than Dalhstrom which was the difference tonight imo. It's very important that the Lakers score first tomorrow night.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Definitely a very successful weekend with a win and tie against one of the hotter teams in the WCHA in NMU. Great to see them win the Cappo Cup as well.

Edit: UAA lost so the Lakers will finish 6th or 7th. Lakers will travel to either Bowling Green, Mankato or Michigan Tech to start the WCHA Playoffs. Right now the Lakers would travel to Michigan Tech but anything could happen the last weekend of the WCHA regular season. Those UAH losses in October kind of sting right now. Had we won those games against the Chargers, we would be battling for home ice next weekend.

Good weekend for the lakers and now on to Ferris. Is Globke finished for the season ? is it an injury or locked away in the dog house that has him not playing ?

No injury that I know of. He hasn't played since he took the 5 minute major at Tech.

I heard travel cost are up 40% with the way the league is now and it is hurting just about every team in the WCHA .

I would definitely believe that.

Just one Alaska trip alone is probably in the $30,000 to $40,000 range. The Lakers have made the Alaska trip 4 times in the past 2 seasons. In the old CCHA it would have taken 6-7 years of league play to make 4 trips up to Alaska.

And the Alaska teams pay a lot of that. I heard that the WCHA now wants the Alaska schools to pay for hotel rooms as well. Sigh. However, air fare is a lot cheaper right now with oil prices so low, we booked a flight to Colorado for half of what we used to pay. That should be helping costs.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

The WCHA and referees are clearly against head coach Damon Whitten and the good ship Laker.

Great article by Randy Russon in www.hockeynewsnorth.com on the LSSU Lakers clinching a playoff spot with their BIG weekend against Northern Michigan. http://www.hockeynewsnorth.com/ncaa/lakers-heading-to-the-playoffs/

A three-point weekend has secured a playoff spot for the Lake Superior State Lakers and assured them of at least seventh place in the 10-team Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Playing at home, the Lakers upended fourth-place Northern Michigan 3-1 and then erased a 2-0 deficit to hold the Wildcats to a 2-2 tie.

The three points boost the Lakers WCHA record to 9-12-5 with two games to play in the regular season, both at Ferris State against the fifth-place Bulldogs next weekend.

The Lakers are two points back of sixth-place Bemidji State Beavers.

All 10 WCHA teams have two games to play in the regular season.

Freshman defenseman Owen Headrick of Garden River First Nation had assists in both weekend games for the Lakers and is sixth in team scoring with 4 goals, 7 assists, 11 points in 34 games.

Headrick, who has been playing with a sore back for the past several weeks, earned praise from Lakers head coach Damon Whitten following Saturday’s 2-2 tie.

“He’s playing the way we need him to play,” Whitten said of the freshman blue-liner, who is returning to full strength from his back ailment.

Whitten also gave full credit to the Lakers for overcoming the 2-0 deficit and gaining the 2-2 tie on Saturday.

“We stood with it,” Whitten told play-by-play announcer Bill Crawford on the Yes-FM post-game radio show.

Overall, through 36 games this season, the Lakers have a record of 12-19-5 under second-year coach Whitten.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

I was looking at some of the pictures from last nights game at the following link: http://www.lssulakers.com/sports/m-hockey/2015-16/photos/0024/index

In the bottom pictures, who is the player in the jersey and dress pants? It looks like Johnson, but I can't read the number. Not sure if this was his last year of eligibility?
I noticed that too. I think it probably is Johnson. I think he has one season of eligibility left athletically but I've heard Bill C say he will get his degree this Spring so he's basically a Senior academically. He red shirted his first year at LSSU because he didn't make it through the clearing house. Although I think he could come back and play next season and take some classes, I'm not so sure he will do that. My guess is that he won't be back; I haven't heard anything either way.

Thanks. I do remember that he was red shirted so I figured this might be the case as well.

If Johnson doesn't come back, that would be 5 forwards we'd be losing from this season's squad; that's counting Loesch who although still listed on the roster as a D-man has really been converted to a forward. I think we'll probably have 5 new forwards next season: Luke Morgan, Bryan Basilico, Max Humitz, Brendan McKay (Austin's brother) and Brayden Gelsinger (assuming they can get him cleared through the NCAA; even if they do, he'll probably have to sit out some games in the first part of the season).

Yes, it was Johnson. After doing the traditional Sr. pictures, they had Johnson and student manager Wes come out and join the 6 for pictures. Both will be graduating in April.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Very impressive 3 point weekend for the Lakers expecially with Northern playing pretty good. Both goalies deserved to win both games, just a fun weekend of hockey. Other than the first period on Saturday the Lakers really clicked well.

I have nothing to say, I'm just trying to push down the Movers & Packers threads since this one was below them.
