LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Through a strange quirk, it's in fact correct that Lake State's first D-1 opponent was Bemidji. The Beavers played from 1946-67 as a D-1 independent, and joined the NAIA in the fall of 1967. So when the teams played during the 66-67 season, they were still a D-1 school. Bemidji would rejoin the NCAA in 1983 in the short-lived D-2 level before it was absorbed by D-3 in 84-85.

Incidentally, the teams split their 1966-67 series with the Beavers winning the opener 3-1 before the Lakers won the rematch 5-1.
Interesting. I wasn't aware that Bemidji went from Div 1 to NAIA and then back again. I knew Bemidji and the Lakers were big NAIA rivals back in the late 60s and early 70s. Thanks.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

When they announced that Damon Whitten was coming to coach the LSSU Lakers is a day I will never forget, and might be my fondest Laker hockey memory.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Seems the WCHA may be putting only one team in the nationals this year and that will be who wins the WCHA tournament .

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Randy Russon of www.hockeynewsnorth.com and www.saultthisweek.com previews this weekend's big series against Northern Michigan. http://www.hockeynewsnorth.com/ncaa/10269/#more-10269

Winners of five of their last six games, Northern Michigan Wildcats are headed to the Soo for a pair of matches with the Lake Superior State Lakers this weekend.

Seemingly peaking at the right time of the season, Northern Michigan’s winning ways of late have pushed coach Walt Kyle’s Wildcats into a fourth-place tie with the Ferris State Bulldogs in the 10-team Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Both Northern Michigan and Ferris State have 28 points from identical records of 12-8-4.

As for Lake Superior State, the Lakers return home to the Soo after splitting a pair on the road against the Alaska Nanooks last weekend.

The Lakers are in current possession of seventh place in the WCHA with 20 points from a record of 8-12-4.

Eight teams make the playoffs in the WCHA.

All teams in the WCHA play a 28-game conference schedule and all 10 clubs have four contests remaining in the regular season.

Northern Michigan heads to the Soo this weekend for Friday (7:37 p.m.) and Saturday (7:07 p.m.) games riding the hot goaltending of Mathias Dahlstrom who recently reclaimed the starting job and has an overall record this season of 7-0 with a 1.98 goals against average and .922 save percentage.

The Wildcats can also put the puck in the net at a high rate and are all led by the twine-denting trio of Dominik Shine, Darren Nowick and Robbie Payne, who have combined for 36 goals this season.

Of note, Payne, who is a sophomore, and freshman Denver Pierce are two Wildcats forwards who played junior hockey with the Soo Eagles. Payne has 11 goals this season and Pierce has five.

Lake Superior State, which controls its playoff destiny, is led by sophomore forward J.T. Henke, who has three goals in his last three games and nine on the season.

As Henke has been lighting it up offensively, the Lakers figure to be without solid defenseman Matt McArdle this weekend. McArdle suffered a lower-body injury up in Alaska last weekend.

Struggling in the goal-scoring department this season, Lakers head coach Damon Whitten likes the fact that his young team has been creating more scoring opportunities of late.

“We are getting more grade A scoring chances and that is a good sign,” Whitten told host Bill Crawford on Monday’s Laker Hockey Show, which airs on Sault Ste. Marie radio station ESPN 1400.

Whitten also told Crawford that the Lakers are eagerly anticipating the games with Northern Michigan this weekend.

“We match up with them rather well,” said Whitten, while noting that the Kyle-coached Wildcats have a history of turning it up at this time of the season.

“Walt Kyle is a tremendous coach who has his team playing very well,” Whitten said of the hard-nosed, 59-year old veteran bench boss. “We are looking forward to the challenge.”

Meanwhile, the Lakers are expected to ride sophomore goalie Gordon Defiel for the rest of the season.

Whitten said that after consultation with Lakers goalie coach Terry Barbeau, it was decided to name a clear-cut starter heading into the final two weekends of the regular season and prior to the playoffs.

Defiel and freshman goalie Nick Kossoff had been rotating for most of the season.

Both Laker games against Northern Michigan this weekend will be broadcast on radio station 99.5 Yes-FM with the aforementioned Crawford calling the play-by-play.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Has anyone gone and watched this Chase Gamelin guy who plays for the Soo Indians ? Seeing how he will be a Laker coming up, I was wondering if anyone has watched him play at the Pullar .

I haven't seen him play. Presumably some Laker fans in the Soo have watched him play for the Blue Devils and Eagles. He still has another season of Junior hockey; whether that will be with Brookings again, I don't know. He's not ready for Div 1 hockey at this point. I think he needs to really further his development next season if he's going to eventually play for the Lakers. Still a question mark in my mind.

So "Bill" you haven't seen him play, yet claim "he's not ready for Div 1 hockey at this point"?

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Following a weekend split on the road against Alaska Anchorage last weekend, Lake Superior State returns home to host Upper Peninsula rivals Northern Michigan. The Western Collegiate Hockey Association weekend series will be the final home stand of the season for the Lakers (11-19-4, 8-12-4 WCHA) and the first time WCHA points will be up for grabs between the Lakers and the Wildcats this season.

The Wildcats (15-11-6, 12-8-4 WCHA) enter the weekend riding a three game winning streak and have won four of their last five games, as well as winning seven of their last 10 games overall. The Lakers meanwhile had put together back-to-back victories after snapping a six game losing streak before falling to the Seawolves last Saturday. The Lakers have split their last two series against Bemidji State and UAA.
A Sip from Father Cappo's Cup

The teams will be wrapping up the Cappo Cup rivalry as well this weekend. The trophy, first awarded to the winner of the series by Father Louis Cappo during the 1991-92 season, is awarded to the team that holds the best overall record in the season series or by total goals if the series is tied.

The Lakers won the first ever series for the Cappo Cup on a 9-5 total goals advantage after the teams split a home-and-home nonconference series 1-1-0. That series came during the Wildcats' first stint in the WCHA while the Lakers were still playing in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. NMU holds a 14-8 advantage in the series and has won the Cappo Cup each of the past two seasons.
This season, the series is currently tied 1-1-0 with the Lakers holding a 7-6 advantage in total goals. LSSU last won the Cappo Cup series in 2012-13 when the Lakers captured a 3-1-0 series victory and paced the Wildcats 10-4 in overall goals.

The Series vs. Northern Michigan

Overall: NMU leads 66-39-10

In Sault Ste. Marie: Tied 25-25-6

Last meeting: Oct. 16-17, 2015, NMU won 6-3 in Marquette / LSSU won 4-0 in Sault Ste. Marie

Streak: LSSU 1-0-0

The teams last met Oct. 16-17, 2015 in a nonconference home-and-home series which featured both sides securing wins on their own home ice. The Wildcats took the first game 6-3 at the Berry Events Center before the series shifted to Taffy Able Arena, where the Lakers claimed a 4-0 shutout in the weekend finale.

NMU enters the weekend in a tie with Ferris State for fourth place in the WCHA standings with 28 points. The Lakers, with 20 points would need to secure a sweep in each of their next two series against the Wildcats and Bulldogs for a shot at home ice in the playoffs. LSSU currently sits in sole possession of first place, two points up on the eighth-place Seawolves.

During the series opening victory for the Wildcats, freshman Mitch Hults scored consecutive power-play goals to lead the Lakers in scoring during the loss. Sophomore forward Robbie Payne led the Wildcats with a hat-trick.

Mathias Dahlstrom played the first two periods in net for NMU and earned the decision with 13 saves before being replaced by freshman Atte Tolvanen in the third period. Tolvanen made 11 saves and allowed a late goal by Josh Nenadal in the relief effort.

Freshman goaltender Nick Kossoff responded with 19 saves in a shutout performance for the Lakers in the series finale. The shutout was the first for an LSSU goaltender making his collegiate debut in the modern era. The Lakers exploded for four goals on 12 shots in the second period and left Tolvanen stunned.
Laker Log

Last weekend the Lakers earned a split on the road against the Seawolves thanks to a late power-play goal scored by the team's leading-scorer J.T. Henke on Friday night.
Sophomore goaltender Gordon Defiel responded well after allowing two goals in the opening minutes of the second period by UAA, which tied the game at 2-2. Defiel turned aside the final 14 shots on goal to record his eighth win of the season. Defiel (8-11-3) made 22 total saves in the victory.
Henke scored again and added an assist during Saturday's 5-2 loss to the Seawolves to claim the team-lead with nine goals and 18 points overall.
Junior Gus Correale tallied two assists during Friday's win, including the helper on Henke's game-winning goal. It was Correale's third multi-point game this season and first points since recording a goal and an assist against Brown (12/30).
After limiting the Seawolves to 0-for-7 on power-play opportunities last weekend, the LSSU penalty kill now sits at 86.0 percent and third overall in the WCHA.
Freshmen Gage Torrel and Mitch Hults each added a point this weekend to remain tied for second on the Lakers in overall scoring and second among WCHA freshmen in total points. Torrel, who scored a goal on Saturday, has seven goals and eight assists, while Hults has six goals and got his ninth assist of the season on Friday's game-winning goal.
Freshman Anthony Nellis (3-10--13) has the most power-play points by a WCHA rookie this season, with one power-play goal and nine power-play assists, and is tied for sixth overall in the WCHA. Hults is tied for the league-lead among freshmen with three power-play goals.
Diego Cuglietta (4-5--9) leads WCHA freshmen and is tied for fifth overall with three game-winning goals. Among all Division I freshmen, Cuglietta is tied for fourth in game-winning goals.
Nine-of-11 game-winning goals scored by the Lakers this season have come from freshmen. The other two game-winning goals were scored Henke, who is in his first season with the program. The LSSU freshman class ranks tied for second among WCHA teams with Michigan Tech's junior class at nine game-winning goals behind only Minnesota State's seniors with 11.
LSSU is tied with Alabama-Huntsville for the most blocked shots by a team in the WCHA with 444 this season. The Lakers and Chargers are tied for 12th nationally. After recording just one block last weekend, sophomore defenseman Kyle Chatham (1-4--5) ranks second behind Graeme McCormack of Bemidji State for second in the WCHA with 63 blocks. Chatham ranks tied for 17th nationally in blocked shots.
The Lakers are tied with Sacred Heart for the most penalties (193) against and have served the most penalty minutes (506) among all Division I teams. Boston College is second nationally with 487 penalty minutes against.
The Lakers rank fifth in the WCHA and 17th nationally with 1,066 faceoffs won.
LSSU is tied with Bowling Green for third among WCHA teams with 19 goals during the first two and final two minutes of games.

Scouting the Wildcats

The Wildcats are led by the scoring tandem of senior Darren Nowick (12-16--28) and junior Dominik Shine (13-14--27).
Nowick is tied with Minnesota State's Teddy Blueger for the league-lead in scoring, while Shine is tied for third among WCHA scorers with Ferris State's Gerald Mayhew.
Gerald Hanson (3-16--19) ranks third on the Wildcats in scoring while Payne (11-7--18) ranks fourth and defenseman Brock Maschmeyer rounds out the top-five with a line of 5-7--12.
In net, the freshman Tolvanen (6-9-6 overall) has produced a .929 saves percentage and a 2.42 goals-against average in a team-leading 22 games played this season.
Lately the Wildcats have tabbed junior Mathias Dahlstrom, who sports a perfect 7-0-0 record in net this year. Dahlstrom's saves percentage sits at .922 and boasts a 1.98 goals-against average.
The Wildcats have won four of their last five games and are 7-3-0 in their last 10 games.
Last weekend the Wildcats picked up a sweep over WCHA bottom-dweller Alabama-Huntsville at home with a 3-0 victory on Friday and a 3-1 victory on Saturday.
Friday's 3-0 shutout win was the first of the season for Dahlstrom.

Senior Send-Off

Immediately following Saturday's series finale and after the presentation of the Cappo Cup, the Lakers will honor their six senior players with the annual senior send-off presentation. The six seniors playing in their final game at Taffy Abel Arena on Saturday night include LSSU captain Austin McKay, assistant captains Bryce Schmitt and Eric Drapluk, Zach Loesch, Peter Spratte and Daniel Vernace.

A Look Ahead (vs. Ferris State)

The Lakers close out the season on the road against Ferris State next weekend, March 4-5. The Bulldogs (14-11-6, 12-8-4 WCHA) are tied with the Wildcats for fourth place in the WCHA standing and eight points ahead of the Lakers.

The teams last met Nov. 27-28 in Sault Ste. Marie. That series ended in a split with the Bulldogs winning the first game 1-0 before the Lakers claimed a 3-2 comeback victory in the series finale. The Lakers, trailing by two goals after two periods of play, exploded with a three goal third period to shock the Bulldogs.

Hey folks, mind sharing some local eateries? Coming up for the Friday game. Where's the absolute BEST place to eat in Sault Ste. Marie?

I don't live in the Soo area but I think the food at Karl's Cuisine is excellent. It's on Portage Ave across from the Soo Locks. If you want more of a Pub type atmosphere, most people like the Antlers, also on Portage Ave, bur further downriver, just beyond where the power canal empties into the river.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

The Palace on portage is also pretty good Mexican food nice atmosphere. For breakfast Frank's place on portage and Studebaker's on the business spur is pretty good.

Frank's Place on Portage Ave. usually has a dinner buffet on Friday with walleye on it. They also have a breakfast buffet in the mornings, although the regular menu is good too.

The Palace (also on Portage) is great for Mexican. If you get in there, ask for the Queso with flour tortilla chips - you won't regret it!

We tried Studebaker's back in October. Great breakfast! Thanks all. Hoping for a different outcome up there this time.

The Walleye buffet is pretty good and very reasonable priced.
