Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

I can't wait to hear the Laker Hockey Show, with the Voice of the Lakers, Bill Crawford, along with LSSU Lakers head coach Damon Whitten on ESPN Radio Station 1400 http://stream.1400espn.net/ Monday night starting at 6 p.m. Come down to the Antlers and be a part of the hour long show, that interviews coaches, players, the Soo BlueLiners, and Bill takes questions from the audience.

If you can't make it, or can't tune into Bill and Damon, you can hear the podcast http://lakers.sovcomm.net/ and past broadcasts of the hour long show. The Lakers should turn it around on the road next weekend, after some tough luck at home.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Will be interesting to see who makes the trip to Bemidji. Sounds like Drapluk and Patterson are still questionable due to injuries.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Will be more interesting in how they play . We can't keep telling second year defense men after a full year of hockey under their belts that they just need more experience . What did Anzalone say? Come February , there are no freshmen.

Part of our defensive lapses have been the forwards not getting back hard and fast enough to help out and break up odd man rushes. It's not all on the D-men. And face it, we are playing mostly freshmen and sophomores at both positions, as well as in net. It's not we have a veteran team with lot of experience. Yes it's frustrating at times but we're going to have to live with the growing pains.

Bill your correct the growing pains just hit hard this past weekend. I think the last two home series were possible huge chances to showcase to the local people how far the team has come in just one year. UAH is quite a bit better than they were last season but to get destroyed by them on the Saturday night was the worst possible time to have a game like that by far. ASU played well for a first year team and their freshmen were the strength of their team the Lakers just had two off nights but again wrong time to have that happen. The Lakers looked better right from the first shift out in Portland when they scored but had it taken away like 10 seconds into the game against the NoDaks. That Laker team looked very confident in the offensive zone.

I think the second half should bring more consistent play and better results if they can get and stay somewhat healthy.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

The Lakers need to show they can win and not just get close. They are ranked already 58th in the power rankings and that means there are a hell of a lot of teams out in front of them. What kind of experience are we looking for ? Twenty five games ? Thirty eight games? One season two season ? We always talk about they just need experience and when they get that, we will see more wins. Arizona came in with 15 freshmen listed and flew home with two wins. Globke still can't score as he did as a freshman and you have to ask, did he have better line mates than then now ? I hope he didn't have better line mates than . If he did and they still finished at the bottom, could be a very long season again.

It's talent that wins and drives you forward and not experience . Twenty, twenty one and older guys have plenty of experience in playing the game. It's how much talent do they bring to the ice with that experience .

The team as of right now needs to get better in their own end and become more consistent offensively. The talent is on the roster it just needs to come together on a very consistent positive level.

As far as Globke is concerned every game I have seen him play this year he is working his *** off out there with different linemates quite often. The effort is there but no the stats are not so I find it hard to criticize him. His freshman season he did play the whole season with two very talented seniors.

I do agree with you the team needs to learn how to win.

It's not a matter of total years of hockey experience. It's experience at the college level. Neither the Lakers nor ASU have a lot of that. The two games could have gone either way. The Lakers didn't play well enough, especially Friday, and had more trouble than ASU finding the back of the net. I think many of us felt that it probably was going to take at least until year 3 under Damon before we started to see significant improvements in the W-L column. Obviously we're hoping for something quicker than that, and perhaps we'll start seeing it yet this season, but I think we have to be realistic in our expectations.

I can't say for sure what all the reasons for Globke's drop off in production are. Some of it may just be that he hasn't had the shooting eye he had his freshman season. But don't discount the fact that he played on a line with Dan Radke and Colin Campbell that season. Those two guys are very good hockey players and were Seniors that season. Radke was an excellent play maker; that was his strength. He set up a lot of goals for Globke and Campbell.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

I was looking, and in Mel's second year at MTU, they started 4-10-4. I think the Lakers are trying to rebuild similar to how Tech did. The results do not seem much different so far.

It is a work in progress. The BIG problem is I have to keep reminding myself this. Have a great and safe time in Bemidji.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

The LSSU Lakers led by Damon Whitten are a program in progress. The skill level with the underclassmen and his recruits is a refreshing change from the patchwork of the previous 8 years before him. The future of the program is looking good as evidenced by the fact that of the Lakers top six scorers, one is a sophomore and the other five are freshman. Leading the Laker scoring chart is sophomore forward J.T. Henke. And right behind him are five freshmen, forwards Gage Torrel, Mitch Hults, Anthony Nellis and Diego Cuglietta and standout defenceman Owen Headrick

Of particular note is Owen Headrick, who is the youngest player for the Lakers this season. Headrick has played in all 12 games for the Lakers, and his poise and skill on the ice, along with picture-perfect passing, has made Coach Whitten and the entire league take notice, with a mature game well beyond his years.

Are you related to Owen Headrick? Friend? Agent? His PR rep?

When I said hello to Whitten while ya'll were down at BG, he commented on what a good job Bergeron has done, and that the Lakers are using BGSU as a rebuilding model. 'Course that doesn't exclude Tech either, but I bet he's taking notes on all of the WCHA rebuilding successes: BGSU, Tech, UAH...

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Randy Russon continues his unparalleled coverage of local hockey, and the LSSU Lakers with his article in www.saultthisweek.com

Lake Superior State University Lakers remain a work in progress under second-year head coach Damon Whitten.

And while the Lakers have an overall record of 2-8-2 that includes an 0-2-2 mark within the Western Collegiate Hockey Association thus far this 2015-2016 season, Whitten can take some comfort from the fact that LSSU’s top players are either freshmen or sophomores.

One of the Laker standouts through 12 games has been freshman defenceman Owen Headrick, who starred with the Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League the past two seasons and who hails from nearby Garden River First Nation.

The youngest player on the Lakers with a 1997 birth date, the 6-foot, 185-pound Headrick has seen regular duty and has played in all 12 Laker games this season.

In fact, as the quarterback of the Laker power play, Headrick has been an offensive bright spot for the Lakers in addition to playing solid defensive hockey.

With 2 goals, 2 assists, 4 points in his first 12 games as a Laker, Headrick is tied for fifth on the LSSU scoring chart.

Whitten has plenty good to say about Headrick, singing his praises on the Laker Hockey Show, which appears on Mondays at 6 p.m. on local radio station ESPN 1400.

“He plays with a lot of poise for someone so young,” Whitten said of Headrick.

“You look at the fact that he is four or five years younger than a lot of guys he is playing against and the fact that he plays in all situations for us. He is definitely a player that we are building around.”

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

New recruit. A defenseman Kristofers Bindulis out of Latvia. Playing for the Aston Rebels (NAHL), also played for the Soo Eagles. I'll see if I can find any more info on him, one of my buds housed many of the Latvian players here in town last season.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Another high-end recruit picked up by Damon Whitten. Randy Russon is all over it on www.hockeynewsnorth.com

Defenceman Kristofers Bindulis, who played for the Soo Eagles during the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 seasons when they were members of the North American Hockey League, has committed to the Lake Superior State University Lakers of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, HockeyNewsNorth.com has confirmed.

The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Bindulis, who has a 1995 birth date, is originally from Latvia and is currently playing his final season of junior with the Aston Rebels of the NAHL.

Besides playing in the NAHL with the Soo and Aston, Bindulis has also seen action with the Des Moines Buccaneers of the United States Hockey League.

He is slated to join the Lakers of LSSU for the 2016-2017 campaign.

“I’m really excited to sign with Lake Superior State and move to the next level. I am really thankful to all the people who helped me and were there for me along the way to achieve my goals,” stated Bindulis.
