LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

You're right... I should have referred to you as "Media".... My apologies.

See www.hockeynewsnorth.com for LSSU goalie saves the weekend.

Sophomore goalie Gordon Defiel played a big hand as the Lake Superior State University Lakers took three of a possible four points on the road at Bemidji State this weekend.

Defiel stopped 80 of 83 shots as the Lakers defeated Bemidji State 3-2 and tied the Beavers 1-1 to boost their Western Collegiate Hockey Association record to 1-2-3 on the season. Overall, the Lakers now have a record of 3-8-3.

LSSU was out-shot by a wide margin in both games at Bemidji.

In the 3-2 win, the Lakers were out-shot 35-17. And in the 1-1 tie, LSSU was out-shot by a 48-31 margin.

Next up for the Lakers is a pair of home games next Friday and Saturday against the Ferris State Bulldogs.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Good to see that they could take 3 out of 4 from the beavers on their ice.
Always nice to get some points on the road. Now we need to get some points at home. Ferris is a good team so it's going to be a challenge.

Bill Crawford did mention the Lakers have recruited a bunch of new players and there are going to be surprises when the college releases the names. Makes me wonder what a surprise means.

I think Damon probably just meant that there may be a name (maybe a couple) that will be new to most of us. Since we've already talked (on here) about some of the kids who have made verbal commitments to the Lakers but haven't signed NLIs yet, I don't think there will be many surprises. Until a kid signs an NLI, the coaches can't publicly talk about him. He's previously said that they are still trying to recruit a high end forward for next season. It's possible they've found one, or maybe just will be bringing in a kid a year earlier than originally planned because he is developing faster than expected in juniors.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

I was hoping maybe the surprises would be players drafted by the NHL. Can't recall the last time we have had NHL recruits being that it has been that long ago.

That would be a nice surprise.

Most of the high end kids commit to schools pretty young these days. If we land a high end (forward) recruit for next season like the coaches are hoping to do, it's likely to be either (1) a late bloomer who went undrafted (NHL) and uncommitted to any other school, or (2) a kid who may or may not have been drafted but had committed to another school and then has subsequently decommitted for some reason. Or if one of our existing "future" recruits is having a really good season in Juniors and developing faster than the coaches thought, then they could bring in such a kid next season also.

You might want to be listening to the hour long Laker Hockey Show, on ESPN 1400 as the Voice of the Lakers, Bill Crawford will be interviewing LSSU Lakers head coach Damon Whitten and assistant coach, Rich Metro. Lots tonite on the series last week, recruiting, and looking ahead to this weekend's games against Ferris State University.

Take notes

LSSU Laker goalie Gordon Defiel has been named WCHA defensive player-of-the-week.

Following a weekend in which he saved 80-of-83 shots on the road to Bemidji State, Lake Superior State goaltender Gordon Defiel was named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Defiel, a native of Stillwater, Minn., capped a stellar weekend in net by securing three points for the Lakers (3-8-3, 1-2-3 WCHA) in the WCHA standings.

LSSU picked up a 3-2 victory on Friday night as Defiel made 33 saves, including stopping all five shots in the third period to preserve the one-goal victory. Saturday, the Lakers were outshot by 17, but Defiel backstopped the Lakers to the 1-1 tie with a career-best 47 saves.

Defiel turned aside a combined 19 BSU shots in the third period and overtime on the weekend. Defiel finished the weekend with a 1.44 goals-against average and .964 save percentage.

After earning the title twice in 2014-15 as a freshman, Defiel has now been named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week three times during his career. The sophomore netminder was honored one time as the WCHA Rookie of the Week last season as well.

Defiel and the Lakers host Ferris State at Taffy Abel Arena this weekend, Nov. 27-28.

You can hear the hour long podcast of Damon Whitten AND Rich Metro's interview on the official station of LSSU Laker athletics ESPN Radio 1400, with legendary voice of the Lakers, Bill Crawford at http://lakers.sovcomm.net/

You can also hear all things LSSU Lakers, along with the Soo Greyhounds and the NOJHL on the Hockey North Show, with Randy Russon, Tuesday night at 5 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1400 http://stream.1400espn.net/ Joining Randy on the show will be Ferris State University standout Jared VanWormer who will be talking about the games with the Lakers, and Soo Thunderbirds GM Kevin Cain, who will be talking about many things, including Owen Headrick and his time as a T-Birds and the amazing start in his LSSU Lakers career.

You can read more about Owen Headrick in www.saultthisweek.com with Randy Russon http://www.saultthisweek.com/2015/11/24/nhl-scouts-are-watching-lakers-owen-headrick

NHL scouts are watching Lakers' Owen Headrick

The youngest player on the Lake Superior State University Lakers is attracting the attention of at least a few National Hockey League scouts.

Freshman defenceman Owen Headrick, who has a 1997 birth date, has seen regular duty while playing in all 14 of the Lakers games thus far this season.

In fact, as the quarterback of the LSSU power play, Headrick has been an offensive bright spot for the Lakers in addition to playing solid defensive hockey.

With 2 goals, 2 assists, 4 points in his first 14 games, Headrick is tied for sixth on the scoring chart for the Lakers, who have scored just 28 times thus far this season.

To be sure, a few NHL scouts have taken note of the 6-foot, 185-pound Headrick, who hails from Garden River First Nation, just outside Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

When USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program played an exhibition game at LSSU to start the 2015-2016 season, Headrick was the one Laker in particular who had more than one NHL scout in attendance talking.

And when the Lakers played host to the Arizona State Sun Devils last weekend, one NHL scout confirmed that he made the trip to LSSU specifically to watch Headrick.

What stands out to those who have closely watched Headrick — besides savvy in running the LSSU power play — are his smarts, poise, smooth skating, precision passes and ability to read the play quickly.

Having earned the trust of second-year Lakers head coach Damon Whitten, what is also impressive about Headrick is that he is several years younger than a lot of guys he is playing with and against.

“He plays with a lot of poise for someone so young,” Whitten has said of Headrick.

“You look at the fact that he is four, five, even six years younger than a lot of guys he is playing against and the fact that he plays in key situations for us.”

As an example, Headrick is four years younger than James Roll, his sophomore defence partner with the Lakers.

From the coaching end, Whitten has been careful not to over-use Headrick while recognizing the obvious skill level and maturity of his young defenceman, who starred for the Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League the past two seasons after being an Ontario Hockey League draft pick of the Erie Otters in 2013.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

New fresh, original LSSU Lakers content on Hockey News North this morning. http://www.hockeynewsnorth.com/ncaa/lakers-home-to-ferris-state/ including Randy Russon's interview on the Hockey North Show, heard Tuesday's at 5 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1400, with Ferris State University Jared VanWormer, who is also played locally on the American side for the Soo Eagles of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League.

Sailing a bit-more smoothly following a successful excursion to Bemidji State, the good ship Laker returns home this weekend to face off against long-time rival Ferris State.

With a record of 1-2-3 within the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and an overall mark of 3-8-3, Lake Superior State is riding the crest of a two-game set at Bemidji State from which the Lakers emerged with a 3-2 win and a 1-1 tie against the Beavers.

Looking ahead to the two games at Taffy Abel Arena on Friday (7:37 p.m.) and Saturday (7:07 p.m.) the 1-2-3 Lakers and the 4-4-2 Bulldogs meet in a conference series linked to the hotly-contested, 10-team WCHA.

Both games will be broadcast on Sault Ste. Marie radio station 99.5 YES-FM with Bill Crawford calling the play-by-play.

The Lakers are tied with Alabama-Huntsville for eighth place in the WCHA with five points while the Bulldogs have 10 points and are tied for third with Bowling Green — with a key factor being that Lake Superior State has four conference games in hand on Ferris State.

The two-game series marks a homecoming of sorts for Ferris State junior forward Jared VanWormer. During the 2012-2013 season, VanWormer won the scoring championship while starring for the Soo Eagles when they were members of the North American Hockey League.

The parity within the WCHA this season has not been lost on VanWormer.

Appearing on a recent edition of the Hockey North Show which airs on Tuesday nights from 5-6 p.m. on Sault Ste. Marie radio station ESPN 1400, VanWormer spoke of how one-goal games and ties are the norm in the WCHA.

“It seems every Sunday when I check the weekend scoreboard that every game played was a close one,” said VanWormer, who added that he looks forward to playing at Lake Superior State every year.

“That year up in the Soo was my first time away from home and I have great memories of living there and playing for coach Bruno (Bragagnolo) and the Eagles,” VanWormer noted.

VanWormer, who captained the Eagles during his one season in the Soo, has retained the work ethic that made him a junior hockey success and led to him being recruited by Ferris State coach Bob Daniels, who has been in charge of the program since 1992.

The highly-regarded Daniels has referred to VanWormer as “the hardest-working player on a hard-working team.”

As for the Lakers, they enter the two-game series with Ferris State in search of some home-ice success.

In their 14 games thus far this 2015-2016 season, the Lakers have a 2-2-3 record on the road but are just 1-4 at home. (They have an 0-2 record in neutral games.)

Bright spots for the Lakers this season has been the play of their freshman class.

The freshman crop of Lakers has combined for 15 goals, 23 assists, 38 points — which is the best in the WCHA.

Three Laker freshmen are 2-3-4 on the team in scoring — Mitch Hults has 4 goals, 3 assists, 7 points while Gage Torrel has 2-4-6 totals and Anthony Nellis has 1-5-6 numbers.

Another freshman, 1997 birth-year defenceman Owen Headrick, has played in all 14 games as the youngest player on the Lakers and is tied for sixth in team scoring with 2 goals, 2 assists, 4 points.

LSSU Lakers weekend preview from the great folks in the athletic department. http://www.lssulakers.com/sports/m-hockey/2015-16/releases/20151124x521wf

Following a three-point hockey series at Bemidji State, Lake Superior State returns home to face long-time rival Ferris State during a Thanksgiving Weekend series. Saturday's game will mark the 10th game between the teams since joining the WCHA in 2013.

The Lakers (3-8-3, 1-2-3 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) and Bulldogs (5-5-4, 4-4-2 WCHA) open a series loaded with WCHA standings implications. The Lakers are tied with Alabama-Huntsville for eighth place in the conference with five points. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs have 10 points on the season are tied for third place with Bowling Green.

The series begins Friday night at 7:37 p.m. and concludes Saturday at 7:07 p.m. Both games can be heard on 99.5 YES FM, and a live video stream is available at http://wcha.tv. Throughout the weekend, fans can purchase Family Four Packs (two adult and two children's tickets) for $25. Area elementary students who have made the honor roll during the recent marking period will also receive free admission to one game. LSSU concessions is offering a 16-inch pizza special including four pops or coffees for $20.

Last weekend at BSU, the Lakers earned a 3-2 victory for their second road win of the season. Anthony Nellis (1-5--6), a freshman from Breakeyville, Que., registered the game-winning goal over the Beavers. The goal by Nellis was also his first collegiate goal.

Mitch Hults (4-3--7) also scored Friday night as part of a two-point weekend for the freshman forward from Stoughton, Wis.

The Lakers held on for a 1-1 tie on Saturday to secure three pivotal points in the WCHA standings. Gordon Defiel (2-5-3) backstopped the Lakers with a career-high 47 saves, including saving all 14 shots during the third period and overtime. Defiel turned aside 80-of-83 shots on the weekend en route to being named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week for the third time in his career. Defiel produced a 1.44 goals-against average and a .964 saves percentage on the weekend.

Alex Globke (2-2--4) scored the goal for the Lakers on Saturday. The tally snapped a four-game scoreless streak for the junior forward.

The freshman crop of Lakers has combined for 15 goals and 23 assists for 38 points. Ferris State's junior class, with 14-32—46, is the only group combining for more points this season.

The Bulldogs' Gerald Mayhew (3-12--15) enters the weekend leading the WCHA in scoring.

FSU freshman forward Corey Mackin (5-8--13) is tied for second in league scoring, and is tied with Kyle Schempp (5-7--12) for a team-leading five goals this season. Mayhew, Mackin and Schempp are all among the top five in league scoring.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

This used to be a very nice forum to come and interact with other true Laker Hockey fans about opinions or experiences. It didn't matter if you agreed with another poster or not there was respect and a common goal of wanting the Lakers to reach respectability again. The team has a new young hard working coaching staff in place and the team still hits bumps in the road here and there but the future is finally looking bright.

It sure would nice if the trash would stop because I think it's unfair to the two players that are constantly being referred to in the spam.

I read a tweet from Davyd about the age discrimination that may be voted into college hockey this April. I agree with him if it gets voted in then a boycott of the Big11 schools that voted for it should be considered by all the smaller 40 something schools. I thought the GLI was Tech's baby if so then kick them other two schools out of it.
