LSSU Lakers 2014 off-season thread (part 2)

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014 off-season thread (part 2)

From what I heard, Jim Roque also knew his nuts and bolts and game strategy pretty well, but he had trouble communicating that to his players. He was also too much like a box of chocolates, as in you never know what you're going to get. The players, and I suspect assistant coaches too, never knew what to expect from him in terms of his reaction to either losses or wins. He was too much of a loose cannon.

It'll be interesting to see if they've gone to the other extreme with someone who never shows much emotion... I haven't personally spent time with Whitten, but I've never seen him get excited.

Seems no one had any questions .

I noticed after the press conference the media went in for questions. I figured more questions would have been asked on certain issues. I did like that the players looked like they were receptive of Damon in a positive way. He should do a good job but only time will tell.

In Roque's case, I heard there were times when the players were expecting him to be much more excited, and he wasn't, and at other times it was the other way around.

Not really but after the conference he just asked Dunbar the tough question about Shawhan and then the audio went out.

You must be thinking of Anzalone, Bill. Roque's demeanor is very even. Doesn't get too excited, nor does he lose it like you're implying.

I'm not implying anything. That's what the players thought about him. His demeanor may very well have been different during any contact you had with him.

Are you a player now too, Bill? You are able interpret and represent the thoughts of the players now as well? C'mon! The only players who may have felt this way are guys who were cut from the team, or did not play as much as they would have liked. In other words, disgruntled players. Jim Roque is very even in his temperament. He's very stoic. He is not a hot-head. That was Frank Anzalone!

I have to agree with Midge. Roque is about as even-keeled as they come. He doesn't smile ever, but he also does not go off all half-cocked.

I understand that some of you dislike the former coach at your school, but the next person who takes a cheap shot at his kids gets a long suspension. Just how cowardly do you have to be to pick on a teenage girl?

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014 off-season thread (part 2)

It's time for everyone to move on. We as a community need to move on with the positives, no more of the negatives. My hope has always been whoever became coach, whether he was local or not, could turn this team around. Let us ALL give Coach Whitten a chance. As we did with Coach Roque.

During his time at LSSU, Roque was fined for disparaging comments about officials, and among other highlights, received a game misconduct and a 1 game suspension for violating a league good conduct policy; after said incident, went so far as to file an actual police report against a lineman...now that linesman may very well have said what Roque claimed during a heat-of-the argument moment, and that is wrong of the linesman but at the same time I think it's a pretty well known concession among adults that during heated exchanges people often go over the line and say things that they don't really mean....I think most people would have chalked up a "threat against my life" during a heated exchange from an appointed college hockey linesman as simply terrible judgement, not a real life threat, it's not like the guy was a mobster....point being that clearly Roque had the capability in him of being a hot-head and using poor judgement during and after intense situations, so although he may not be a crazed lunatic at all times, he certainly has notable incidents of "excited behavior", incidents that many other "even keeled" coaches do not have on their record, so saying unequivocally that Roque couldn't be a hot head *at times* is simply false.

As far as Whitten goes, I didn't get a chance to catch the news conference, is it archived anywhere? I like that others mentioned that he plans on making recruiting phone calls tonight, he's clearly not messing around and we need that hunger if we're going to succeed.

The press conference is still available at the LSSU Hockey web site. Note that the actual press conference doesn't start until about 47 and 1/2 minutes into this. Here's a link:

Very interesting press conference shocked about how few questions were asked. Hope coach Whitten can turn the program around.

I'm not qualified to judge Damon's hockey knowledge, but I do know him and can say for sure that he is a leader with excellent communication skills. He'll relate to the kids and hold them accountable. Plus, he'll bring excellent recruiting skills to the table. Great hire.

Thank you for the input midwest hockey. I like the sounds of that.

Does anyone know who the reporter was in the red shirt who asked the last question?? After the presser was over and everyone was filing out he was asking Dunbar a few questions and I could hear some of his questions but none of Dunbar's answers....One question he asked was how many applicants there were and his last question was about Joe Shawhan...As I said I couldn't hear any of Dunbar's answers but I would sure like to get an ID on that reporter so I can see if i can track down wherever that interview is to be published at, cuz I'd like to see her answers to both questions.

You are speaking about ONE incident and trying to make it sound like it happened all the time. It was one incident, and as for this linesman not being a "mobster" or anything - well, how about a cop?! He's a cop with a hot head. He's a cop who was recently involved in a bar fight in mid-March where he punched a woman in the face! So, if Jim Roque felt that his threat was more than 'simply terrible judgement', I can totally understand why. I stand by my statement that Roque is even-keeled. I have seen many other coaches going bat**** crazy behind their benches, but never Roque. He is not easily ruffled. He is calm in situations where I wonder how he remains so calm. So, saying anything to the contrary is 'simply false'.

The fine and the suspension I referred to were two separate incidents, and the cop being " a hot head" proves my point. Regardless, if you want to think of Roque as even keeled, that is your prerogative, the important thing is that Roque and his temperament whatever you judge it to be; is no longer plaguing Lake State. I'm done arguing about Jim Roque and his merits (mainly the lack thereof) as a head hockey coach.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014 off-season thread (part 2)

If a Coach stands behind the bench with arms folded, quiet and calm, he lacks fire and passion. Coach goes off on a ref or a player, he's a hot head. Best of luck and congratulations Damon.
