LSSU Laker Hockey

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

Yes, congrats to UMD. Always happy to see michigan lose.

There could be a negative aspect to UMDs win though. Their coach has been there for 11 years and in 6 of those years they had a sub .500 record (including a 4 year stretch). The right kind of coach (or in our case perhaps the wrong kind of coach) with good connections can use their (UMDs) success as an argurement to keep himself around. "Look at UMD, a few years ago no one would have ever thought they could do this. People think the same thing about us. Give me some time and I will do what they did." Or something to that effect. Now I never would have thought this myself but I just saw a posting on facebook by someone I KNOW is a Roque fan/supporter that was bringing up the same point...that UMDs coach had bad seasons but the school stuck with them and now they have a championship. It does worry me. Hopefully that arguement wont be used. Although as each day passes I worry more that we will have to deal with the situation for another season.

I found this fear preposterous when I first read your post. In retrospect I admire your prescience. I actually heard this argument made today. I no longer trust my version of reality. Do the readers believe this reasoning? Are there truly parallels between these programs that should give us hope? Let's hope so.

I found it preposterous too until I saw the name attached to it on facebook. And if that person had the thought...well. To give you an idea it was a female...and their last name rhymed with...sock (we have a mutual friend who has ties to UMD and I saw the post on their page). I dont think anyone here believes this line of reasoning at all. My fear was that the wrong person would believe that and if someone wanted to they could take advantage of it. I dont think there are really any parallels. UMD improved shortly after their coach arrrived and even made it to the frozen four in his 3rd or 4th year (this after a 1st season with single digit wins). After that they had some sub 500 seasons but again improved and did what they did this year. Their improvements were big big improvements. Roque really hasnt improved things much..if at all. We made the Joe and thats it...and havent been back. The record has stayed consitent and the team has been consitently inconsistent. The only parallels I see are smaller school.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

Averaging 18 loses a year in Roques last 4 years is not building a program . if anyone even thinks that is remotely program building has to be a non-sports fan.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

Duluth has a student body of almost 11000, four times the size of LSSU.....small compared to Wisconsin or Michigan perhaps but not that small compared to LSSU.

Yeah i guess when it comes down to it when I say smaller I mean the schools that are D-II (or used to be). But when you compare student body size...yeah no parallels.

So the Roque defenders have resorted to another school winning a championship that has no similarity to what is going on at your little college, and the coaches wife putting a post of facebook? What is five more years, when you have experienced the bottom division the last six. You have no idea how irrelevant your team has become.

And 3dogdonornight, dopey, bill and neil will believe anything their bud Jimbo tells them to say.

You people are so predictable.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

While at the championship tournament this weekend, I was very surprised and encouraged by the responses generated by my Laker jersey. The fans, including some Michigan fans, commented not only on the appeal of the classic design, which we all know about already, but shared their fond memories of teams of the past. Some 30ish men told me it was their dream to play for the Lakers, and I was even serenaded by two gentlemen wearing UMD shirts on my way into the Xcel Center on saturday night. I found their hummed version of "Anchors Aweigh" quite moving. Laker fans, our team is still beloved.

Not to throw salt in our collective wounds, but one man asked me seriously if the Lakers still played division one hockey. I was at a loss as to how to answer. I diverted him by drawing his attention to the LSSU championship banner, hanging proudly from the rafters of the arena.

I received an email from a former colleague that moved out to the Twin Cities area five years ago. He didn't have tickets to either the semi-finals or final game, but he spent the weekend in the downtown area, just to be a part of the atmosphere of the event.

Of course we all know Minnesota is a great hockey state, and he described as much. Top-notch event from all accounts. But he was really surprised at how much attention his LSSU jersey received. Obviously current Lakers and people who once attended school here were sure to stop and talk to him; but he was even more impressed at just how much the jersey is respected in college hockey overall. Lots of people wearing BU, BC, Maine, Denver jerseys, etc, givin' him 'high-fives', or "Go
Lakers!" as he passed by. He said he was really taken aback after it was all said and done.

Yeah, it would be nice to experience the golden days once again. But it's good to know that even if that never happens, what the Lakers accomplished at one time is still fresh in the memories of diehard college hockey fans around the country.

Perky, Steel should be going up in March 2012 on the back of the arena for Phase 1 (Hockey center, educ room, Laker Club). I am not sure that the political types would not wait until Phase 2 (front of arena) for an official celebration. Probably not, eh? HA! They will gut the locker room right after the season and possibly no summer camps (not yet decided). Phase 1 is scheduled to have the hockey center completed by mid-august and the other areas done by October 1. The website www.norriscenter.com will fire up as we get closer.

Thanks for the update 3dog. This project certainly will help the overall welfare of the hockey program and all the other sports at Lake State. Trying to get potential student-athletes here for all of Lake State's sports will get a big shot in the arm with the new facilities. I plan on helping the athletic dept. by making a purchase towards the brick campaign.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

JR signed a 1 year extension for next year. Found out this weekend-reliable source.

Well....not suprised. If they were going to get rid of him I would have imagined it would have came earlier. However, I guess the one good note here is that since its only a 1 year extension it would seem to be a ultimatum. A "you have one year to give us results" type thing. Hopefully the higher ups spend some of the next season watching other coaches around college hockey and in other leagues/leavels and start putting together a list of candidates they want to bring in. Dont want to be waiting until the last minute.

Yes, the fact that it is only a one year extension sends the message that the powers that be (AD, President, Foundation Head, etc) are concerned enough with the Lakers performance under JR to only give him one more year to produce better results. And that may be difficult to do unless some of the returning players show significant scoring improvement, or some of the incoming freshmen can put up good numbers. They have a lot of scoring to try and replace with the graduation of Schofield and Acton, and to a lesser degree Nehring. The only guy coming back among the forwards with good scoring stats is Monardo.

Great news for Laker fans and the University. This shows how committed the University is to renovating. 8th place here we come!

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

The one year thing doesn't mean anything. All coaches at LSSU are on a one year rollover after their initial hiring (multi-year) contract. This policy was instituted at least five years ago.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

Didn"t Roque sing a 4 year contract and than a 2 year extension and now a 1 year deal and that is normal ?

You people will have Jim Roque for a long time because no matter what he does on and off the ice, as has been shown year after year, he will be back. Enjoy him and enjoy D3 in a few years because that is the direction he and his cronies are taking your little college up there.

The first one was a 4 or a 5. I don't know about a two yr, so I can'r say one way or the other. I just heard that one year extensions are the policy now
