Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

Yes, congrats to UMD. Always happy to see michigan lose.

There could be a negative aspect to UMDs win though. Their coach has been there for 11 years and in 6 of those years they had a sub .500 record (including a 4 year stretch). The right kind of coach (or in our case perhaps the wrong kind of coach) with good connections can use their (UMDs) success as an argurement to keep himself around. "Look at UMD, a few years ago no one would have ever thought they could do this. People think the same thing about us. Give me some time and I will do what they did." Or something to that effect. Now I never would have thought this myself but I just saw a posting on facebook by someone I KNOW is a Roque fan/supporter that was bringing up the same point...that UMDs coach had bad seasons but the school stuck with them and now they have a championship. It does worry me. Hopefully that arguement wont be used. Although as each day passes I worry more that we will have to deal with the situation for another season.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

Yep that's for sure. I believe UMD is the first school that plays Division II in all sports expect hockey to win a Division I championship since our Lakers in 1994.

The are many reasons I enjoy college hockey; one of those reasons is the small colleges can go toe to toe with the big colleges and come out the winner. Congrats to UMD!:)

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

Let us jump forward to September and coaches and media day for the CCHA and I am telling you right now that the Lakers are picked to finish 10th-11th and don't be surprised if it is 11th with Bowling Green in front of them. One team had less conference and less over all wins than Lake State in the CCHA and that was Bowling Green. Take away the circus we call shoot outs and the Lakers would have finished 10th this year . Six years of Roque and the best the Lakers did this year was have more wins than Bowling Green and LSSU feels that is a solid reason for keeping the guy.

You are exactly right sm2pk. Western was picked 10th this season, get a new coach, and make the NCAA Tournament. Not going to happen with Jim Roque in his 7th season and absolutely nothing changing, recruiting the same guys, playing the same way, expecting the same results.

It's good to have ties with happy donors, and I'm not talking about the ones that donate organs.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

Doesn't North Dakota fit that category? They won it in '97 and '00.

The football team for North Dakota was Division II back when they won the titles in 1997 and 2000. I am not sure about the other sports.

Their football team switched to Division I just a couple of years ago.

Logically, the Lakers should be a weaker team next year. The players lost may in time be replaced by the underclassman, but the 2011 graduates were quite good and also obviously greater in number than this year's juniors. I suspect the Lakers should be picked to finish at the bottom of the conference until they give someone any evidence that they will do otherwise. I however, will always remain tragically optimistic, with suspension of disbelief.

You will never get rid of Jim Roque and his crew at your little college, even if they finish near the bottom again, more league reprimands and embarrassments , and 3/4 empty rinks.

It is laughable how you people up there defend him year after year after year after year after year after year after year.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

While at the championship tournament this weekend, I was very surprised and encouraged by the responses generated by my Laker jersey. The fans, including some Michigan fans, commented not only on the appeal of the classic design, which we all know about already, but shared their fond memories of teams of the past. Some 30ish men told me it was their dream to play for the Lakers, and I was even serenaded by two gentlemen wearing UMD shirts on my way into the Xcel Center on saturday night. I found their hummed version of "Anchors Aweigh" quite moving. Laker fans, our team is still beloved.

Not to throw salt in our collective wounds, but one man asked me seriously if the Lakers still played division one hockey. I was at a loss as to how to answer. I diverted him by drawing his attention to the LSSU championship banner, hanging proudly from the rafters of the arena.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

Nope. All of North Dakota's sports are Divison I. Great West Conference for all of their other sports.

They switched all of their sports to Division I a couple of years ago. All of their sports were Division II except hockey (same as LSSU) back in '97 and '00 when they won the NCAA Division I Hockey Championship.

And you can thank Frank Anzalone for building your little colleges program into a once powerhouse, and the man responsible for those banners. There are some that want to poke fun at him and defend their beloved Jim Roque at all cost, but it is the truth.

That man that asked about the Lakers still playing division one hockey might be foreshadowing where the Lakers will be a couple more years under this administration.

Suomi College vs Lake Superior State College should really pack them in aye?

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

Congrats to UMD, a solid program. I was able to see games in the DECC and in their new digs...very impressive.
I have stopped on the board as various times during the year and "lurk" during the season....Lots of "interesting" discussions....many nearly unbelievable in their nature until I remind myself this is an internet chat board.
Regarding the Donor Group...we DO NOT get involved with the business of the LSSU Athletic Department. We are not that type of donor group. Our project is for the PROGRAM and is not influenced by any team, coach, player, president, or administrator. We DO have a preliminary commitment from the Board of Trustees to support D-1 Hockey at LSSU through 2023. That commitment will be further developed by a specific contractual document which provides line item budgeting identifying what is considered minimal support. While there are concerns regarding the state support of LSSU long term, a contract with financial consequences for breech of same is the best way to position Laker Hockey for the future.
It is also amusing to read how we should shift some money to 1) recruiting 2) Coaches salaries 3) arena renovations 4) other flavor of the day.......
There are NCAA regulations regarding how and when we can contribute to the program, tax incentives are evolving, and Taffy Abel is a GREAT barn. Our concentration is on facilities and programs that lead DIRECTLY to improving the product on the ice. Locker / Training Facilities, educ support, summer scholies, goalie clinic are examples. Phase II does deal with updating the Bldg in ways that either generate revenue or address long standing needs. Our facility will provides future Laker hockey players training and educational support equal to or better than rival CCHA programs. Everyone has
their own ideas for what would help things along...well folks, ideas are like you know what...everybody has one. There is plenty of room for others to contribute to their area of interest..
but I like the old phrase "If you listen to the fans, you will soon be sitting with them." We will continue with our project, continue with our non interference policy, continue to support the program and leave the decisions to those charged with making them.
But we are far from "Happy (idiot) donors"...we recognize many programmatic deficits the program has with the changing hockey landscape and one of the smallest active donor bases in the CCHA. Want to help? Join the Laker Club...because if your only contribution to the program is your opinion..well, you get what you pay for. Guess what...we know what we are doing and we are in it for the long haul. The Anzalone period along with the old NAIA and NCAA Championships are all long distant fond memories that NO recruit knows of or remembers.

Lets get on with the future of Laker Hockey. Our timing will coincide with a revamped NCAA footprint. We will either be in a CCHA where we will be VERY competitive in the facility war, or in a new league that will provide some exciting competition (my opinion) resulting in an automatic NCAA bid.

I will now put to rest my responses to last season and look forward to working on our project.......I choose not to get involved with a particular player, team, coach, etc we are putting together a new base which will support new expectations and no.......bottom tier records will not meet the new reality once all of the pieces are in place.

ONWARD!

Welcome back 3dognight. Your response pretty much matches what I thought the reality is. There are a few on the forum who seem to feel that support for the Norris Center project is tied specifically to having Jim Roque continuing on as head coach, but I have never thought that to be likely. As far as shifting more money to recruiting is concerned, I'm not so sure that anyone is expecting such money to come from your group, but there is certainly a hope or desire that more recruiting money can be found somewhere.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

and Taffy Abel is a GREAT barn.

The Anzalone period along with the old NAIA and NCAA Championships are all long distant fond memories that NO recruit knows of or remembers.

You should see it with 500 people for a playoff games. Maybe unnamed donor guy I can send them to you. Wouldn't want you to lurk for no reason.

How sad it is that no recruit remembers and you and your group wants to forget. I guess the recruits do know what it has been like the last six seasons and the flight schedule from wherever Saskatchewan to your little village and college.

Laker fans should never forget those championships and a once proud program and what it was. Easier to justify your cause and your coach if you do I guess.

You people are so predictable.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

I have been at Taffy many a game this past season. The simple fact is that todays recruits were pups during the Lakers "Golden years" and the Lakers that have moved on to the NHL have been few. That is a recruiting problem when going after top guys who want to see training facilities, year round scholies, educational support in a school to get them to the next level.

I am old enough to remember LSSU as a hockey power...it must have been great to have been a part of that era.

We need to begin developing a new era...we are targeting 2012-13 as a point where our efforts will help LSSU be attractive to top players. I do like many of the LSSU grinders, but they need 2-3 players a year. I hope we can help make the Lakers program solid moving forward. I also hope you can enjoy the next era. We choose to look forward......some cannot. To each their own.

Looks like the spokesman for these unnamed donors, and of course a person with no tie to Jim Roque, is now saying 2012-2013 is the year.

Even Bill, who for the record is the smartest guy on here, at least looks to the next season starting in October to deflect attention or stick in his head in the sand about the current situation.

3dognight you fit right in here and of course have no ties to this administration or Jim Roque. I think changing the seat colors to yellow might help blend in the empty seats with the rest of the rink when they televise first round playoff games on national television.

We're looking forward not back. ONWARD!

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey

It looks like the Truth(s) is a bit bent out of shape today. Perhaps 3 straight losses and the playoff elimination of the Quad City Mallards has her feathers ruffled. You are sounding very whiney lately, Truthy. Maybe you should call Francis and cry on his shoulder.
