LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

My point is not to anoint anyone. Just the opposite, I think if things would have been done properly and a national search had taken place originally we may have gotten an upstart version of the names I mentioned. If you research Coach Roque the only head coaching experience he had resulted in a dismal record and a mid season firing in Manitoba or Saskatchewan. Maybe we could have lured someone such as Coach Rolston back. He is the Head Coach in Buffalo in the NHL. If it were to ever happen, we would get hundreds of applicants to choose from.

You people up there know, Roque had the right people in place then when the move was made to "name" him head coach, without a search, dismissing a Hall of Fame coach, and now, with his "unnamed donor" buddy who is helping keep him in power, with the condition he remain coach for a long long time. The ultimate job security! Do you people ever wonder why he doesn't change anything after 8 dismal seasons, or tries to intimidate almost anyone who dares question him? Or why there is not a change, despite the record, on and off the ice, and all the other small schools changing coaches, direction, and having success?

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

What we want is the George Gwozdecky that coached at River Falls Wisc. The Jeff Jackson or Bob Daniels that coached in the NAHL. The coach from Mass-Lowell that coached Div. III three years ago. The Don Lucia that started in Fairbanks AK. .
You've got to remember that Daniels and Jackson had five and four years as D-I assistants between the NAHL and becoming D-I Head Coaches. Norm Bazin had 11 years as a D-I assistant prior to taking that D-III head coaching job. Lucia took over Alaska-Fairbanks after serving as an assistant for two years, The team was 102-53-3 in the five years prior to Lucia taking over. It's not like he brought them out of nowhere. Gwozdecky was as assistant for five years at Michigan State between his time at River Falls and Miami.

Roque has sucked. But not as bad as the washed up "Hall of Fame Coach" who couldn't put a 10 win season together.

Everything will be different this year, new conference, new conditioning program, these recruits are the best in years, and Year 9 is the year Jim Roque gets it done. You are so right, he is no Frank Anzalone RapidsCity. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and being so objective.

How do you decide which "Truth" you are going to be? Is it a Serum day or a Squad day? The Truths are out there!

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

In defense of Frank Anzalone and I believe Frank was his own worse enemy . Anzalone took over a team that was division 3 for the most part and by the first year of Roque , you could see the team that Frank was building was coming around as Roques best two years were with Anzalones players .

No doubt, I was just throwing a name out there. I hear good things about Mr. Shawhan at NMU, maybe he will be interested when/if the time comes?

I agree, Frank Anzalone got himself fired through various 'antics'. His coaching record was not a factor in his departure. He would probably be coaching LSSU still if he wasn't his own worst enemy.

Yes, but those pre-Lucia UAF records, like the pre-WCHA UAA records, are somewhat inflated. At that time of Lucia's arrival in Fairbanks, UAF was playing in the not-very-good GWHC against American-San Diego and Northern Arizona, among other interesting teams. The difference he made at UAF was improving the quality of schedule, the quality of recruits and still racking up good winning records. What Lucia did at CC was a miracle -- he took a program with no league titles since the mid-1950's, no budget, an ancient rotting arena, one NCAA appearance since 1957 -- and won the WCHA in his first thre years in a row.

I have to disagree. Frank was fired from his second term because he racked up one of the worst W-L records in D-I hockey over a multi-year period. While I agree Coach Roque has been given enough rope and a change would be nice -- Coach Frank was just totally unable to find any way to win at the D-I level in his second term. Time had passed him. But thats all old news.

I believe its likely that Coach Roque is going to get another year. This worries me, because I just simply have a hard time seeing a different result -- no matter the new league, new schedule, etc . . .

No doubt that Lucia has been one of the best coaches of this generation. Even if some Minnesota fans want his hide year after year.:D

Good lord . . . what have I done?

I am just using Lucia as a point of reference. I forgot he coached the goofers, was a complete jack-hole, and should be universally shunned from polite conversations. My apologies to all ofmy LSSU friends for dragging you into a retrospective of Lucia's career. He was more fun when he was at CC and had the Immaculate Coif. Now he is really just a typical Big Ten arrogant windbag.

BUt more the point -- I realize the college hockey circa 1994 is very different, at least financially, than college hockey circa 2013. And LSSU is no the only school that wishes it could find a "Lucia 1990" coach -- an amazing talent that as-yet is unrealized.

I suggest perhaps we look to the positive -- because I am assuming that Coach Roque wil return for his 10th season. So what have we going for us in 2013-2014?

Goaltending is solid.
Defense is solid.

Again, as ALWAYS, no scoring. And what little scoring we had walked out the door or graduated.

And I am not naive enough to think that a "new league" will sudeenly by easy.

Mankato is poised to be a top dog in the new league.
Tech is improved signficantly, and should be a front-runner.
UAF, likewise, should be in the Top 3 Mix.
Beyond that, LSSU will match up evenly, at best, with BG-NMU-UAA-Bemidji. Ferris is, as always, a complete wildcard. Just depends on whether Daniels get a top line center or not.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

The Lakers over the last 3 seasons are 26-6-1 when leading after 1 period and an abysmal 4-36-4 when trailing after 1 period (18-13-10 when tied). Coach Roque needs to have the guys ready to play every game next year or we just won't win. Plain and simple.

How do those numbers compare to other teams (Ferris, Northern, Bowling Green, etc.)?

If they find a decent replacement for Hammond in net, I suspect BG may be poised to become a top 4 nWCHA team next season.

BGSU: 21-8-2 leading, 7-41-5 trailing.
MSU: 28-11-5 leading, 5-26-5 trailling.

Top CCHA '12-'13:
Miami: 44-5-4 leading, 7-15-6 trailing.
ND: 34-5-4 leading, 14-30-1 trailing.

Thanks for providing that. It looks like LSSU falls into the norm with those stats.

Appears you need to get the lead; there does not seem to be too many come back teams.

Whitehead out at Maine.

"Win or go home" appears to be the mantra at some schools.
