Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

I think the Lakers can definitely beat BGSU, however I don't think they can beat Miami or Notre Dame in the 2nd round.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

To beat Bowling Green, the Lakers have to attack their defensive zone and crash the net for rebounds and screening their goalie . Bowling Green will do exactly that against the Lakers and the Lakers don't handle pressure real well .

It sounds like we might be getting Robert Morris for a home non-conference series in October. Not finalized yet, but that's the way it's looking.

I'll take it. Not the best opponent, but it's better than nothing and the Lakers need home games in October.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

They are also 21st in the Pair wise rankings, which is 10-15 spots ahead of the Lakers.

Robert Morris also went 5-1-1 in non conference games with wins over Miami,Ohio state, Penn State, and Quinnipiac the number one team in the nation. Robert Morris would be a very good team to bring in to play the Lakers.

I didn't realize Robert Morris was that good this year. Great news then! I assume they will travel to Robert Morris in 2014-15 as well. The non-conference schedule lined for next year looks pretty good (Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Union, Robert Morris). Could the Lakers play a 5th non conference series if they go to both Alaska schools (which they should)?

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

Coach Roque hinted at last night's radio show that he was going to look at the goalie situation this week, but kind of hinted he was leaning toward Kapalka. Any thoughts?

I don't mind who Roque starts. Kapalka has the playoff experience, however it seems the defense plays better in front of Murdock.

I'd be surprised if Kapalka and Murdoch didn't each get a start. If it goes to a third game, Roque will probably go with whoever he thought played best in the first two games. If both guys are playing well, I don't know why he would change his philosophy now. On the flip side, me may feel the best way to get to the Joe is go with whoever is hot, and whoever he starts Friday will get the Saturday game also if they win on Friday.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

LSSU has released Tyler Marble from his commitment for next year.

I guess it will be status quo for goaltending next season. I wonder if the Laker coaching staff kind of lost confidence in Marble for a period of time. He verbally committed very early but didn't really do much in Juniors until he started coming on late last season, playing for a strong defensive team (Wellington) in the OJHL. And by that time they had already brought in Murdock, which even aside from Ravn also being on the team, set up a potential goalie overload for the Lakers next season. Sounds like Marble wanted to play a lot right away and didn't feel confident of having that opportunity at LSSU. So two seasons from now we'll have three freshmen goalies, unless they find another transfer at that time.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

Big loss. What happens if Kapalka leaves and signs a pro contract?
At one time Roque may have been thinking that might happen, maybe even hoping it would happen (this past year), but I don't think Kapalka has had a solid enough season that it's likely he will turn pro early, especially with the shoulder problems acting up again. If he (or Murdock for that matter) did turn pro following this season, we'd still be in decent shape in net going into next season; and the coaches would find another goalie to replace him if he left.

He didn't want to redshirt.

I wish him well, and I hope he finds a new home in college hockey.

Its a loss for the Lakers inasmuch as its a loss of a talented player. But the Lakers are fairly well set in the net for next year. I don't foresee any of our goalies leaving for he Pros.

In two years, we will have a collection of freshmen fighting it out in net -- and it would have been nice if Marble had taken a redshirt and been ready for action. But you can't live on maybes.

On the plus side, it frees up some scholarship money.

Perhaps it frees up some scholarship money, but I wonder about that. KK and KM are no doubt getting all (or almost all) of the scholarship money Roque normally has allocated for goalies. Unless one or both of them were willing to give up a portion of that (and why would they be unless their families are well off), it might be that Roque didn't have much if any scholarship money he could give to Marble for next season and that may even have been an influencing factor in Marble's decision.

Ah . . . I don't know how recruiting and scholarship money works as well as some. So this might be an ignorant question: But when a aplyer commits to a program, is he promised a certain scholarship level (e.g., a partial 50%, 25%, 100%)? And if that player suddenly makes big strides in juniors, can they go back to the recruiting school and ask for more money based on improved play? Did this young man have such a good last 18 months that he wanted a 100% full ride, and the Lakers were only willing to give him somethig like "50% and a redshirt, with a promise of more in his junior and senior seasons"?

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

UAA released it's schedule for next season. We play them at Anchorage December 13-14 and they will make their first trip to Abel Arena February 7-8.

I don't know at what point money is actually committed to a recruit. I suspect most recruits are "promised" a certain amount (50%, 75%, 100%, whatever) of scholarship money while being recruited. If they commit and eventually sign their LOI, at some point money obviously has to be set aside/committed to them. I'm just not sure when that happens. Perhaps FRICKER or someone else is knowledgeable about that can enlighten us. In Marble's case, I just wonder how much Roque told him he might be able to give him. He verbally committed over 3 years ago; I doubt he was promised any specific amount at that time; maybe just told LSSU could come up with something for him. More recently, I'm not so sure Roque would have wanted to divert scholarship money to him that he (Roque) planned to use on forwards/defensemen, and I don't think schools generally give a good portion of scholarship money to all 3 of their goalies; usually the top 2 get most of it. I'm just not sure that losing Marble is going to free up much scholarship money; I don't really know, but am guessing that it won't.
