LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

For 9 pp opportunities this past weekend, the Lakers had a total of 3 shots on goal. Also, it didn't help that they took 3 penalties of their own while on the pp, which shortened 3 of those 9 pp opportunities considerably.

Lakers just can't ride the goaltending to the playoffs . The rest of the team needs to produce and get the shot total down for gods sake.

Too made we can't draw many more than 2,150 fans to see the Lakers win....................

During the upcoming renovation, I recommend shrinking the arena to 2500 seats. I know I've posted this before, but I see no evidence this fan base can support facility of the current size. I know they used to draw better, but that was 15+ years ago.

I doubt that would meet with the approval of the nWCHA.

It's called winning and they will come. Bowling GReen has done it this second half and Western MI has also filled the stands by winning .

Anyone having trouble having accessing the Insinde Laker Hockey podcast? Was there a show this week?
I don't know if there was a show this week. Since they played this past weekend, it seems like there would have been a show.

Last week's show is still at the podcast link, and the first segment of that show is missing. Technical difficulties? Edited out?

Edit: I just listened to the end of last week's podcast and Paul VanWagoner said there would be show this week (yesterday).

Says who?

This response has been given before when I have made this suggestion and I wonder if it is based in fact. Do member (or future member) programs need to seek approval for arena capacity changes from league administrators? If so, how is this done? Formal? Informal? Voted on by a committee, subcommittee or the entire membership? Does anyone here know, or is this pure speculation?

I doubt there is any formal nWCHA approval process for such changes. I don't think the nWCHA schools would approve of such a downsize in principal even if there was nothing they could do about it legally; i.e. they probably wouldn't be happy about it.

Why would the privately funded Norris Center Project want to reduce the seating capacity for hockey? Although the project will enhance the facility for many LSSU sports, the emphasis is on hockey. If the goal is to build up the program through offering better facilities and increase the likelihood of attracting more talent, why would they downsize hockey seating capacity in conjunction with that? Sure, downsizing would make the arena look fuller on most nights now, but winning more games would probably do the same thing by bringing in larger crowds. And although we aren't going to see UM or MSU come to the Soo very often in the future, a 2500 capacity rink would mean turning away a lot of people if/when schools such as UM and MSU do come to the Soo. Those schools draw pretty well now, even with the less than stellar Laker teams of recent years.

The podcast of this week's Inside Laker Hockey show is now available.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

Tough loss tonight especially since other teams didn't help us standings wise. Officiating was questionable as well. Murdock played really well but gave up a couple weak goals. Sternberg really needs to step up his defensive play he made a costly mistake which lead to a Miami goal.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

Agree it was a tough loss. What in the world happen to the Lakers's 5th goal? At times tonight I thought the Lakers were playing 5 on 7. They did a nice job breaking their streak and finally getting a couple of pp goals. Murdock did a good job holding Miami to only 5 goals. Miami really showed their speed in the 2nd period and parts of the 3rd period.

I have to admit when I left the rink I felt the officials should be embarassed they did not put out the same effort either team did and the Lakers should be for their lack of shooting the puck. You can't score if you don't shoot the puck.

Good luck tomorrow guys night!:)

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

The way that the ref's are going after Lain is just plain deplorable. The poor guy can't play any sort of physical game the first three penalties showed that. I also agree the whole crew of officials should be embarrassed. The first goal Miami scored was way offsides. There was actually quite a few missed offsides in the game some for both teams.

I think both teams played hard and gave the crowd a great bang for their Buck. Miami is a heck of a team.

Let's go Lakers !!!

The 3rd period might of been one of the most entertaining periods of the whole season.

Hope Monardo keeps up his hot streak. They'll need him if the Lakers want to make noise in the playoffs. Also his 18 goals are the most by a Laker since 1996-97 when Sessa and Blaznek both scored 22.

EDIT: MSU wins 1-0. Dead last and a trip to Alaska for the playoffs is still possible if the Lakers lose out.

Can't give up 51 shots and 5 goals and expect to win. And they were being outshot 38 to 11 after the second period. For those at the game, were they really being outplayed that bad for the first 2 periods?

Wasn't at the game, but did listen via Miami's All-Access internet radio feed. From the Miami play-by-play caller, it was a pretty even game except for a 10-12 minute spurt in the 2nd period. The difference is that Miami tends to get the puck to the net at all costs, while Lake State was much more selective in their shots. Keep in mind two things: 1) Miami has a history of high-volume shooting for a 2-1 win (or loss) - the efficiency has NEVER been there; 2) Lake State just became only second team all year to score 4 goals against Miami. Selective shot taking can be extremely difficult against a defense the calliber of Miami. So, a 4 goal game on - what? - 20 shots? That is quite impressive.

Really good team up there in SSM.

EDIT:
The last team to score more than 3 goals on Miami was Michigan back in October 2012 (4-2 Michigan win).

Miami pressed hard in our end of the rink, many times it looked like the Lakers were going to be able to clear it to only have a Miami player keep it in or make a nice intercept of a pass. If the Lakers can get the puck out of the zone a little easier tonight and Kapalka gets in his game they have a shot.

Monardo is playing the best hockey of his life. I hope a few more people come out to send off the seniors tonight.
