Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

The Lakers need to do what a lot of teaMS do between weekend games, Practice . I was at the game and the Lakers looked horrible. Forty-five minutes of the game was played in the Laker end.The Laker defense wears you out watching them trying to clear the puck out of their end. It seems to take them eight to ten attempts to clear the puck and you are worn out watching that. The offense applies so little pressure in the offensive end that the play is always heading back into the defensive zone . The poor defense must go nuts always having the puck back in their end most the game.

Sacred HeaRT has not won a game this season and if the Lakers had a weekend series right now against them, Sacred Heart would have their first win . That was one sorry looking Laker team tonight and winning another game this season is going to take some magic if tonight was what they are really like.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

I have a feeling Truth Boy will be back if the Lakers lose tonight so the Lakers better win! Lakers need to get their heads out of their butts!

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

The entire house of cards has caved in on this team. Offense has caved, defense has caved and even the goaltending has caved in . Good teams don't finished at the bottom . Lake State just doesn't have the talent or the skills the coaching or the team leadership. After 8 years of roque, this team has been a flop in trying to
climb back to a upper tier team in league play.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

Sounds like the PK and PP killed the Lakers tonight. Also it seems like Murdock is coming back down to earth as well. Oh well at least the silver lining is Daniel Vernace. Congrats to him on his first collegiate goals.

The Lakers will probably be on the road (probably NMU, Bowling Green, or Michigan) for the playoffs for the first round unless they take 3/4 on the final homestand and split the NMU series. Even that might not be enough.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

Just getting back from tonight’s game; I came away with several thoughts.

1. The game was much closer and exciting than the score would indicate.
2. Both teams were pretty evenly matched.
3. Even know the final score does not reflect it both goalies were very good. Murdock and crew were successful in fending a 5 on 3 early on.
4. Over the last several years I have noticed that the Lakers will score; then the next time down the ice their opponents score. I believe this happened twice tonight. I don’t know if they loose focus or what.
5. The defense was hot and cold. Defensive laps ultimately cost a couple of goals; one where Czuczman ended up taking a penalty to help Murdock out and BG scored on the ensuing power play.
6. I met some very nice Falcon fans. But I sat with some of the worst falcon fans in the building who thought they new the game. I know every team has some, but I sure hope we treat visiting fans better than we were treated.
7. They did play hard and it was a shame to loose the game like they did; sad to say the official’s calls or/and lack of calls in the last 7-10 minutes dictated the outcome. I believe there are no saints on the ice; but call a game consistently and fair. I don’t believe this was the case tonight; the consistently anyway. But with the officials in the CCHA what do you expect.
8. I was impressed by the Lakers not retaliating; but ultimately that is what cost them the game at the end. Perrault boarded a BG player in retaliation for being boarded himself just seconds before. BG scored on the power play and then the sky fell in.
9. Czuczman seemed to put in a lot of minutes and deservedly so; I thought he had a good game despite a couple of penalties.
10. I noticed Lain was not in; I presume because of the disqualification from last night’s game. He was missed.
11. I have not seen them play since November and I really did not see much improvement in their over all play. Other teams seem to be improving but not the Lakers.

Bill I think you thought if they lost this weekend the will not win anymore this season. I feel really bad for saying it but I would agree with you. It’s not where my heart is but they will have a tough road ahead of them.
From one of the nice Falcon fans I was told BG was really hot last night. But the Lakers really should have pulled this one out somehow to get a split for the weekend. We’ll see how they respond in a couple of weeks.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

It's one thing to get swept by BG on the road, but it'sembarrassing to get slaughtered! Maybe the Lakers should dress (3) goailies for the remaining road games, eh?

.
My thinking is that they needed at least a split, probably a sweep, this weekend in order to have a chance at salvaging the season in terms of perhaps finishing close to .500 in the CCHA, getting a 1st round bye, and maybe even showing like they were ready to make a push in the playoffs. Roque stated last season that he thought the Lakers were a year away from being a really good team. He very likely knew Trotman was leaving early when he said that, but perhaps not that Jean was going to leave early, and the injury/surgery to Campbell has certainly hurt, but this has turned into a highly disappointing season and there's more to that than just the absence of Jean and Campbell. I think this is a better team talent wise than what they are showing on the ice. The bottom line result is wins and losses and this Laker team isn't getting it done.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

I have seen Bowling Green play a few games this year , and the Falcons are so much better now than they were back in the first half when I watched a couple games. The Lakers on the other hand seem to be getting worse and not better. The sad thing is next season when the Lakers move to a weaker league ,WCHA , 85% of this team will be back and they just don't have the talent to be a upper tier team and most likely they will once again be battling for the bottom spots.

What really got my notice is even after Bowling Green went up 7-3 , they were still wanting to score another goal. That is what the offense needs to be taught regardless of the score. Attack and score goals. Has Roque just turned out to be Borek 2 ?

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

Laker 54...how could Lain be missed when his replacement scored 2 goals. My god, that was the bright spot of the night. Lain sits and his replacement plays great and scores 2 goals . Lain didn't do a **** thing Friday but get tossed and his replacement gave a great game. Keep Lain out if the freshman can play like he did as his replacement.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

No other word: Collapse.

3-11-1 on the road.

Sorry, but that is just horrible. Just absolutely horrible.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

Lakerblue, and the sad thing is that 85% of this team will be back and there isn't any bright spots outside maybe goal tending to even hope on for next season. that may also not be so bright as it seems not just one goalie but both are now getting scored on rather badly the last 8 games.

Just an obervation.;)

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

I haven't seen the Lakers play since early November, but am tentatively planning on heading up to the Soo for the Alaska series. If nothing else, I hope they play hard both nights and have at least something to show for it. And I'll say it again, I think there is more talent on this team than their record indicates. They are underachieving.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

The taste in my mouth from the last 2 weeks is putrid, and I am throughly disgusted with this team at the moment but I am going to do my best to try to find some silver linings:

1. Might the mixture of a disappointing second half (part of which may have played into his DQ) from both a team and individual standpoint, added to the fact that his classmate/friend/former roomate Campbell missing this season be enough to convince Lain that regardless of the offers that come his way following this season that he would be best served to come back for his senior year? I look at Lain and Campbell as being in a similar position at this point in their Laker careers as were Rick Schofield and Will Acton , respectively. Although Acton did not have a junior year injury like Campbell did, it felt like Acton had a lot of potential to capitalize on heading into his senior year, and he blossomed, leading him into what has been a decent AHL career thus far. Lain, like Schofield, had pro teams interested throughout most of his career, and could have left after his junior year but he came back and as a senior led the team to its first playoff series victory in years while having one of the best season for any Laker in the past decade. Those two players absolutely benefitted from the presence of the other during their senior campaigns and it paid divedends for both, here's hoping that both return and deliver similar results.

2. Both goalies have faded in the second half (although they have already faced a full seasons worth of shots, so who can blame them? so I don't think there will be any worry that either of them would not return for next year, and having two experienced senior goalies on a roster is a pretty good starting point.

3. Vernace has only played a handful of games this season, and was a scorer in juniors so hopefully his two goal game this weekend signals a player regaining some touch and some confidence heading into next season, the emergence of him as an offensive factor would help out with offensive leaders like Monardo and McParland leaving

4. With so much of the team returning for next season, hopefully this slide can teach them a lesson, the team was hot during the middle of this season, and maybe they got a little too high on the horse and took these Ohio teams for granted (as I believe they took UAH for granted), in any case, experience is the best teacher and hopefully next year's team will use this as a learning experience that they have to show up every night.

A pity that it is always next year we have to look forward to since the present is eternally dismal.....to think that I was actually starting to believe in something magical returning to the program, only to be body slammed down......again!

We shall see how the rest of the year plays out but I'm certainly not getting tickets to the Joe cause I don't think a certain team has much of a chance in getting there.

While it would be great to see Lain come back next season, the coaching staff seems to be proceeding on the basis that they think that is unlikely. We currently have 4 senior forwards. We have 4 forward recruits committed for next season plus another (Johnson) who is in school now and should be eligible to play next season, so it looks like they are planning for Lain's departure. I think I heard Roque say on one of the shows that he has an agreement with one of the recruits to play one more season of Juniors if called upon to do so, which if true would allow for the possibility of Lain coming back. But Lain is being called for so many penalties largely because of his physical play which the refs aren't allowing any more (generally speaking), there may not be much point in him returning as far as advancing his hockey career goes; strictly his decision to make.

I think Roque would be happy if either Kapalka or Murdoch did not return next season. It would save him from having to make the decision of what to do with excess goalies. If Marble was agreeable to being redshirted next season, that would also save Roque from having to deal with the excess goalie issue.

Vernace hasn't played enough to know what to expect (or hope for) from him yet, but it was nice to see him pick up a couple of goals. I expect he will get a start when they return to play against Alaska.

They have been sliding most seasons at the end, so I'm not so sure this season will provide any more of a learning experience than the others.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

That's a good point Bill, the Lakers are 16-35-6 (including this season's games) under Jim Roque in the month of February.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2

One other thing on new forwards for next season. They also have a kid from Alberta who visited a couple of weeks ago and who could be an additional forward recruit for next season, so maybe they are expecting someone else (in addition to Lane) to leave early or perhaps one of the other recruits is having second thoughts. The kid from Alberta hasn't committed yet.
