Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

Looking at the Lakers roster posted on the above mentioned link, I notice:

1. Only two USHL players, and they are both Seniors
2. Too many NAHL players (10) to field a team capable of a top four standing in the league. IMO, the USHL is by far the top Junior league in the USA.
3. Is Alex Globke the younger brother of the Globke who played in the CCHA (Ohio State?) a few years ago?4
4. Fourteen USA born players including two from Florida and four from the home state of Michigan.
5. It's obvious to me by the above notations that the Lake recruiters aren't being successful where the top Junior players play

FRICKER,

The recruiting budget was increased this past year; by how much I don't know. The coaches have started to recruit the BCHL and I think are increasing their looks at the AJHL. I think we all would like to see them recruit the USHL more. Whether they've started to do so yet, I don't know. I'm anxious to see where the 2014/15 recruiting class comes from to see if we're getting any BCHL or USHL kids (and the increased recruiting budget is thus bearing fruit). We lose all 3 goalies and 3 or 4 key D-men after this season, plus a couple of our better forwards, so next year's recruiting class will be a fairly large one and very important. The Lakers have one kid coming in from the BCHL this coming season (Nardi), but I think they were tracking him from his days in the OJHL. Alex Globke's brother Rob played for Notre Dame several years ago.

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

I stopped by the Norris Center today and saw that a hockey school going on. That explains why Pink Pony and others have not been posting for a couple weeks. I hope it ends soon so we can liven up this thread.
What would hockey school have to do with people posting? I, personally, haven't been posting because I'm busy and I don't feel like beating a dead horse, as the topic hasn't changed much.

Last I heard, LSSU was looking at a couple guys from Green Bay. That may be for the 14/15 recruiting class, though.

From what I hear and know, the Lakers will take any player they feel can play regardless of where they play but and this is a huge but, Roque has established and groomed his connections in the S.Ontario hockey loop. It is where he and his assistant coaches feel comfortable. The problem is though that it is also one of the weakest areas to recruit from. Many of us on this forum, Fricker, have long argued that the Lakers need to invest their time and resources towards making good contacts in the USHL and western Canada if the program is to have any success.

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

Bill,.........saying that we are going to recruit in the BCHL and actually landing a blue chipper from there are two drastically different things. Breaking in to the BCHL means breaking in to recruiting pipelines like the one between the Chilliwack Chiefs and personal recruiting pipelines between the league and the Wildcats of UNH. The personal recruiting pipeline started with the league and Brian McCloskey and our old friend, Scott Borek, when the were recruiting partners and helped Bob Gaudet (now HC at Darmouth) when the tree coaches were responsible for perking up Brown Universities program. First McCloskey and then Borek moved on to recruiting assistants at Hew Hampshire and continued the BCHL-UNH pipeline. Breaking in to a tight relationship like that one, and it may not be the oldest between the BCHL and the WCHA, isn't easy.
The sad fact that neither Lake State nor the old CCHA has the appeal and reputation western Canada studs recognize. Our statatus in the USHL is no different. We need a breakthrough recruit, like the capatin and/or scoring leader from Omaha or Des Moines to put us on their map.
The increade recruiting budget is "OK" in asteady state (Maintenance) recruiting strategy. What we need is a"blitz" one or two year increased budget to make a major, concerted effort/presence in the USHL to land that one breakthrough player. Will the administration commit that kind
of money on a short term basis? IMO, that's what they need after they target one or two "featured" USHL prospects. Agree? Think it could happen?

FRICKER,
Sounds logical although I don't know how they are using the increased recruiting budget. They may be using some of it to target a high end guy or two in the USHL/BCHL, then again maybe they aren't; maybe they are only expanding their territory without applying it in blitz fashion at one or two guys as you propose. I think it's good that they are at least going to recruit in the BCHL; how long it will take to establish relationships there that will bear fruit I don't know. The 2014-15 recruiting season will be the earliest we may see any results and it could be longer than that. What I didn't hear on any of the Laker Hockey Shows/podcasts this past year is that they are also expanding their recruiting effort in the USHL, although Roque may also have said that and I missed it. Perhaps another Lakers fan heard Roque say something to that effect? I try to listen to most of the shows but I don't catch them every week. I certainly hope they are going to go after USHL kids harder. I agree that getting a high end USHL kid or two would be a big boost and open some doors. Same goes for the BCHL.

Any word on whether Buffalo has filled the assistant coach positions?
No, I don't think they have filled those positions yet. If Rolston has made tentative selections, nothing has been made public.

Edit. I saw something about a week old that said he was still interviewing.

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

What are some of everyone's the ceiling/floor projections for the Lakers this season??

Floor: The Lakers have good, not great goaltending from the Lakers senior netminding duo of Murdock/Kapalka, the defense is decent, but not overpowering and the team allows on average 3.5ish goals a game, the offense struggles to find its legs, Campbell, Ciotti, Radke, and Perfetto hold their own but the rest of a young team struggles to supplement them with offensive input, inconsistently plagues the team yet again and a second half swoon finds the Lakers in 6th place at the end of the season, and we are left in a familiar place complaining about Coach Roque's shortcomings and the state of Laker Hockey

Ceiling: The Goaltending duo of KK and KM start rolling and play up to the level that both have shown in stretches in the past, the defense led by a strong senior presence of Perrault, Bruneteau, and Sternberg puts up a staunch back line, that again, like the goaltending, they have shown they are capable of in the past. Offensively Campbell has a fantastic senior season, capitalizing on the promise he showed as a premium recruit, Ciotti builds on a prolific sophomore scoring campaign, Perfetto and Radke find the consistency they have lacked, and the freshman, many of whom are from successful junior programs coalesce and realize that as one of the biggest freshman classes in a long time they have a chance to turn around the fortunes of this program with individual and thus, team success and supplement significantly on both the offensive and defensive ends, the Lakers find a formula to put in competitive effort every weekend, home or road, league or non-league opponent, and avoid a second half dip and the team finishes in second place, with the capability of winning the post-season WCHA tournament and getting an NCAA bid. I don't think in this scenario that we would be able to beat out Minnesota State in a season long standings battle, but in a winner take all championship tournament game, anything could happen.
