LSSU hockey 2013-14

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

I found published salaries for 6 of the 9 coaches. Mel Pearson (MTU) $275,000 plus a $125,000 bonus for completing his 5 year contract, Chris Bergeron (BGSU) $125,000, Walt Kyle (NMU) $138,000, Jim Roque (LSSU) &81,600, Mike Hastings (Minn St.) $225,000 and Thomas with a base of $150,000. All of them also have varying bonus structures as well, some also can supplement income with camps, media, etc. it's probably safe to assume that Bob Daniels (Ferris), Dallas Ferguson (UAF) and Tom Serratore (BSU) are somewhere in the range of Thomas, Bergeron or Kyle. I believe Kurt Kleinendorst (UAH) was around that range as well.

The UAF student run newspaper (Sun Star) maintains a database/search feature for all U of Alaska system salaries. For 2012 it shows a “base salary” of $120,660 for Ferguson and $125,000 for Shyiak. Not sure how that actually compares to their W-2s.

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

LakerBlue.............I dislike the term "incompetent" as it pertains to Scott Borek. Yes, thick headed, yes, stubborn, yes, a definite mismatch, but calling him "incompetent" is ignorant and misleading. Scott
tried to be somebody he wasn't out of the yultimate respect for his mentor, Jeff Jackson. He wasn't smart enoghto abandon a system that wasn't working. I agree with you that he didn't inherit an empty
cabinet. Oh contrair, there were numerous players who came to the Soo with impressive offensive backgrounds and the "system" ate them up. My son, Matt, for example had a very solid year offensively at
Kimball Union prep in New Hampshire and was relegated to banging the puck of the glass. He was petrified to join the rush, something he excelled at at KUA. Eventually the offense degenerated into dump & dig, then
three fowards cycling down low, many times with all three below the goal line and two D-men standing at the blue line. No offense? No surprise.

Whoa . . . what happened? Who's hit? Talk to me Goose! How did I get dragged back into this. I sit quietly, twiddle my thumbs, do my little work . . . and somehow I was dragged into something.

Lakerblue.................sorry to shake your branch!!!! I was referring toone of your posts, or at least I thought I was, when I referenced your choice of "incompetent". Was that not your post? I tried to find it, but
haven't been able to locate it. If you didn't use that word in referring to Scott Borek, please let me know and I'll retract & apologize on the board. I'm going to look again now..............

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

The salary and bonuses Matt Thomas gets in Anchorage will be roughly double what the LSSU gets. Thomas gets a $150,000 base and up to 50,000 more in incentives.

I understand everyone's concern about what the LSSU may be able to pay a coach. However, I still would like someone to tell me what Roque has done, over the last 8 years, to deserve an increase in pay. If he were in any other business and provided a loosing record or product he would be gone.

We will not know what LSSU is capable of paying until Roque is gone and his replacement is hired. I'm sure other programs needed to raise their salaries when they hired a new coach.

I haven't seen anyone say Roque deserves a raise. It's more like, "you get what you pay for." Take the lowest paid coach in the league and give him the smallest recruiting budget and why is anyone surprised this program has floundered for the last 20 years. Fund a last place team, you get a last place team. Duh. Now pay a good coach and good assistants and give them a competitive budget. Then we'll see what happens.

I concur with RapidsCity, in that, no one has been saying Roque deserves a raise. The only thing people have been saying about raises is that LSSU will need to pay another coach more money. The debate has been whether he should be replaced or not, no one has stepped into the "give Roque a raise" territory. They'd have lost that battle before it even began.

You just wait. Year 9 under Jim Roque will be the best one for Lake Superior yet. Just you watch!!!!

Yes I did use that phrase --- but you previously corrected me, and I (graciously?) accepted that correction. I think you and I both have discussed and agreed that Scott Borek is a good assistant hockey coach and a good overall hockey guy -- but he absolutely did not get the job done at LSSU. I used the term incompetent when I really should have said "unable to win at LSSU." He brought in the talent, that's for sure. In my estimation, he might have had some of the most overall-talented LSSU players. This ability to recruit talented kids made his failures in the W-L columns more irritating. BUt yes, I called him incompetent, and have since made amends.

I noticed season tickets aren't on sale yet. They are ALWAYS on sale by this point. I guess interest in LSSU hockey has really waned the past couple years.

Tickets officially go on sale next Monday, July 8th. There were some last minute changes to the schedule that were not completed in time to get it going by July 1, as usual.

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

I didn't expect Roque to get it. I was interested to see if Kurt Kleinendorst got it. Huh.

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

Even though most of us laid our hopes to rest on the Roque rumors weeks ago, the other shoe has finally dropped as Ron Rolston and the Sabres officially hired Joe Sacco to join Teppo Numminen as his assistant coach.

Once again I was right and the rest of you apologists are made to look foolish. Enjoy another year of lower division finishes, second half collapses, inconsistent play from night to night, dwindling attendance, playoff crowds in the hundreds, and more of the same this year and next year and the next year and the next year and the next year.

The Truth Is Out There....

But are they done? They fired two assistant coaches and have hired one replacement. Not that I want to keep the Roque rumors going, but I wonder if they will still hire another assistant coach. Nothing in the link indicates that either way.

Edit: This article indicates Rolston still intends to hire one more assistant.
