LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

Also noticed ticket prices went up as well which doesn't surprise me. Also all Friday home games start at 7:35 instead of the traditional 7:05 start which is kinda lame.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

The only thing that is disappointing to me is that we play Union when all the students are gone. Im sure that will be a fun series and its too bad it had to be then.
The students will also be gone for Christmas break as well when the Lakers play NMU in the middle of December. The students will be gone as well Thanksgiving weekend when we play Ohio State and lastly they will be gone for Spring Break in late February against Miami. So thats FOUR home weekend series that the students will be gone. That sucks.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

With ticket prices going up, students gone for a lot of the games, and the same old product on the ice and lower division finishes, I wouldn't be surprised if this is the worst ever season for attendance up there with it closer to the hundreds than thousands as people go elsewhere for watching hockey including that new nahl team or over in Canada. Attendance has been dropping for the past 8 years with even playoff crowds in the low hundreds by some accounts.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

I happen to think attendance figures will rebound this year considering that this will most probably be the last time we see teams from the Big 10 grace the surface of the Able arena.....ticket prices are still among the lowest in college hockey.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

Trotman is getting a few nice things said about him at the Boston camp. Wish he would have stayed for his senior year but good luck to him moving forward. Nothing written about Campbell that I've seen. Nice to see a few Lakers at the NHL camps, should help the team in the fall once Captain practices start.
I had heard Jean and Czuchman were going to Sabres camp and Robinson is in Vancouver right now.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

Not that this has anything to do with anything you guys are talking about, but I wanted to jump in to say I was stuck (verrry long story) in the Denver airport (of all places) with one of your sophomores (T.J. Wees). I noticed his Laker hockey shirt, looked down and saw his bag of gear with the anchor on it and had to say something to him. Small world. Nice guy.

I think he was a recruited walk-on last season. He is listed as a D-man but can play forward also. Didn't play much in his first season, but may see more action this coming season. My impression is also that he is a nice guy.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

Bad news for our LSSU brethren. NYR beat writer is Tweeting that Kyle Jean has signed.

This one hurts as it was unexpected (at least in my eyes)....signings like this explain why the level of play in college hockey has dropped by a fair margin over the past 10-15 years....Kyle Jean certainly has pro potential but he still needed at least another year of development but NHL teams are far more apt to sign players early today where as 10 years ago Jean would have certainly returned back to LSSU.

I don't see that changing either. The CHL obviously loves things the way they are, and NHL teams have no obligation to the welfare of NCAA hockey. The NHL has figured out that it's convenient to skim off the promising late-bloomers from the college ranks, dump them in the AHL or ECHL, and let them sink or swim. Meanwhile, you can't blame these guys who decide to sign - when they've made it this far, getting paid to play at any level and maybe at least have a cup of coffee in the NHL is a dream come true, regardless of where you end up in the long run.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

That one stings. We don't have a surplus of soft hands and offensive savy to spare losing a good kid who was just rounding into excellent form. Oh well, this happens. It would have been nice to see him in a Laker uniform for one more season.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

Darn. I enjoyed watching him and was hoping to see how much improved this season. But, it's good for players being recuited to see that the NHL pays attention to Laker Hockey.

Agreed. He has a lot of raw talent that still needs some molding. Got off to a great start last season and then tapered off with the exception of one or two games. Needs to be more consistent and have better focus on his game.

If he plays in the AHL for the season, then it will be a good move for him. But if he ends up in the ECHL, then another year of Laker hockey probably would have been a better idea. He's a kid that I really thought would be a big factor in the LSSU lineup this year, possible an all-CCHA type.

Good point. I didn't even consider that. Having a player or two good enough to be of interest to NHL teams is something the coaching staff can sell on the recruiting trail. It shows the program's ability to find, and develop, players with an eye toward the NHL.

NOW -- the best case would be Jean going ape-crazy over the summer, making the Rangers' squad in the Fall, and scoring 30 goals and getting all sorts of rookie of the year attention. That would be great. Alas, I suspect the AHL or, somewhat likely, the ECHL, will be Jean's home this next year.

Its a good day for the program, really, when our players can realize their professional dreams. It helps with the program's credibility and on the recruiting trail. Nobody begrudged Doug Weight for leaving after two years, and he has done tremendous good for the program both in PR and in raw $.

But short term, losing Jean means losing goals from an offense that wasn't exactly ripping up the league to begin with.

If Jean left 2 yrs of school on the table for the ECHL/AHL me thinks he's not thinking things thru and is getting some bad info from someone. Where's Red Berenson when you need him....

I was definitely surprised to hear about the early signing. He was a key part of the power play and penalty kill, so it will be tough to replace him right away.

With Lain, Campbell, Robinson, and Czuczman also attending pro camps, hopefully non of them will decide to sign and leave school early.
