LIU adds Men's D-1 Hockey

Re: LIU adds Men's D-1 Hockey

https://www.espn.com/college-sports...in-extends-recruiting-dead-period-now-july-31

So does this mean there is a dead period now for hockey as well? So this guy can't even reach out to prospective high school players until August?

Curious how many of the recruits he had going to Colgate will follow him to LI.

I believe electronic recruiting contacts are still allowed, just no in person visits to or by the recruit. He's probably going to put together his first class via Zoom.

I will be surprised if any recruits follow him to LI as they've all signed Colgate LOIs by now. However, I suppose it's possible that there might be a player recruited with a partial ride (or even a walk-on) that would ask for a release to take a bigger scholarship at LIU - although I've yet to hear the LIU AD confirm what, if any, level of scholarships they will offer. Otherwise, why would one turn down a chance to play in an established program/league at a quality school in a beautiful facility for the complete unknown that is LIU hockey?

I think the recruiting ban is limited to in-person visits to campuses or coach-in-home visits for obvious reasons. I would be stunned if coaches were not permitted any electronic or phone contact with prospective athletes.

There are always young turks looking to get a foothold in the D1 hockey world any way they can. Billy Riley (an uncle?) took UMass Lowell from obscurity to a force to be reckoned with. See also Army hockey, where successive generations of Rileys somehow squeezed blood out of a stone (recruiting-wise) more often than not.

Excellent point!

Re: LIU adds Men's D-1 Hockey

Any indication on… ya know… who or where they will play when we don’t even know when the rest of the teams plan on playing?

I wonder how many of these kids will last four years. I'm sure there are going to be a few D-III level players that make this year's roster, but 2-3 years from now find themselves getting cut when the team actually recruits D-I quality players beyond getting a call from the kid, looking at their stats and saying yes. I can't imagine much more than that is going into building this year's team. It's not like the coach they signed last week is watching them on the ice, unless he talked to them at Colgate.

While Riley may not have seen every one of them keep in mind he has a vast network of “eyes” throughout Prep & Jr hockey. His 1st year as HC of Albany Academy, NY he was getting kids from as far away as Cali. Your point about the D1 caliber kids choosing LIU in 2-3 years could be a valid one.

Re: LIU adds Men's D-1 Hockey

Forgive my ignorance here- Nolan McElhaney is transferring in from UNH. He didn't play a game last year while he was recovering from an ACL injury. So he wouldn't have to sit out a year, correct?

I believe this is correct. He has yet to appear in a NCAA game.

Re: LIU adds Men's D-1 Hockey

Add Mitch Meek coming in as a grad transfer from Mich Tech. Sounds like he may have been on a bit of a down turn with some post-concussion stuff the last few years. Played in 43 games his first year, but then had 0 points in 18 games combined his last two seasons. But, he's an older guy (23) who at least has played a bit, so some good vet leadership for what looks like a very young team.

Mitch should be a good player for LIU. When he played for Tech, he played well. He is the type of player I would target if I were starting a new program. Solid on ice skills and someone you don't have to worry about off ice.
