LIU adds Men's D-1 Hockey

Re: LIU adds Men's D-1 Hockey

"If you figure it out and are THAT good a few years in, some bigger DI schools will come knocking. " Can you cite any recent examples where that has actually happened? Perhaps they exist, but they would be few and far between. On the more highly ranked D3 team rosters I see numerous examples of players dropping down from D1, with the AHA being by far the biggest source among the eastern schools. I'm most familiar with ECAC rosters and I can't remember the last time I saw a transfer from a D3 school that actually played (I vaguely recall a practice goalie a number of years back but can't remember the details). I'd be shocked if there were actual examples of such players transferring from D3 to "bigger D1 schools" (which I would interpret to be traditional powers). Undergrad transfers in college hockey generally go down the totem pole (big boys to lower D1, particularly the AHA, and lower D1 to D3) in pursuit of playing time. Most of the exceptions recently are grad transfers going up the stack, but even then I don't remember any from D3 to D1.

Joe Houk transferred from Hamilton to Lowell and was a regular on defense for a team that went to the Frozen Four.

Like people said, it is rare but there are examples, but like I said, you have to be THAT good. I see it happening more in basketball, where DI teams are picking up JuCo players all the time to fill some spots.

So ah, Dave Starman had an interesting Twitter exchange last night...

Twitter Rando: Are you interested in the LIU job? Thoughts in general on LIU?

Starman: I can’t really comment

Re: LIU adds Men's D-1 Hockey

Dan Rubin has the first of a three-part series on LIU on USCHO today. In the series, he talks with three coaches who have started programs, Robert Morris' Derek Schooley, Penn State's Guy Gadowsky, and Arizona State's Greg Powers. It's interesting to compare what they faced and how they planned with what's going on at LIU.

The last thing you want to see is a program fold. But you have to imagine LIU is going to try to grab some of the UAH players. Bunch of Ontario boys on the roster. Not that there's THAT much top end talent there, but they're DI players.

Hate to put it this way but the vultures are landing. The cycle of life, business & hockey....

Well, there’s ~26 dates that just opened up on the WCHA calendar...

😕

Well, I suppose ASU has 4 new open dates, as I thought there was a tentative UAH series and Holy Cross cancelled out on their comittment to travel to Tempe as repay for ASU traveling to their rink the last few years.

Re: LIU adds Men's D-1 Hockey

You guys got a tremendous, young, coach with a great bloodline, I'm bummed that he left Colgate, in his one year there he brought in some very good recruits.

The CHN article is inaccurate, he coached Albany Academy for three years after playing at Hobart. He then recruited Wilkes first year ever D3 team to a 16-8-2 record where they were nationally ranked.

This can't be true. Nobody was interested in this job! ;)

He turned Academy around in the NEPSAC and got them back into the large school finals within a couple of years. It's been clear for a while he has a lot of potential as a head coach.

There are always young turks looking to get a foothold in the D1 hockey world any way they can. Billy Riley (an uncle?) took UMass Lowell from obscurity to a force to be reckoned with. See also Army hockey, where successive generations of Rileys somehow squeezed blood out of a stone (recruiting-wise) more often than not.
