Lindenwood University (St. Charles, MO) moves to NCAA starting in 2011

Re: Lindenwood University (St. Charles, MO) moves to NCAA starting in 2011

30-0. Classy.

This is the same school that recruits Western Canadians who don't know any better by offering them scholarships and telling them they will be playing against "Wisconsin, and Minnesota" without telling them they will be competing against the club versions of these teams.

Northern Michigan got absolutely destroyed by most teams this season and the 30-0 doesn't compare/close to 20 goals short to some of the other scores NMU women's hockey got beat by.

Funny but not a very good example. Northern Michigan was worse than inept in the ACHA, not winning a game all season. But in two games they did manage to score one against Robert Morris (Illinois). Only problem was that Northern also managed to give up 44....clearly this was a team that should have been playing intramurals!

Absolutely right, I'm not sure why NMU isn't good at women's club hockey, the other Michigan based ACHA teams are in LU's league and all very competitive, esp. Grand Valley and Michigan State. NMU is really more of an intramural team than an ACHA DI team.

Re: Lindenwood University (St. Charles, MO) moves to NCAA starting in 2011

It's closer to all the WCHA schools than The Ohio.

And it's the St. Louis metro area, not exactly middle of nowhere. Columbus is about 6.5 hrs from St. Louis, Wisconsin is about 5.5. WCHA women's teams are less travel than many of the ACHA trips from St. Louis to NMU. and comparable with other lower Michigan trips.

How would this team compare to let's say D3, or the bottom team of the WCHA. IIRC, Syracuse had a club team as well just before they started D1 a few years ago. Not sure if anyone on that original D1 team was a leftover from the Club Team.

Looks like in their history they are 0-1 against DI, 10-4-1 against DIII, and 231-21-10 against ACHA DI. But just like all the other talk of ACHA programs moving to NCAA there will be a major retooling of players. (i.e Syracuse). Lindenwood takes sports seriously, I don't expect them to compete for a National Championship in the next 5 years but after that who knows? SinceLU is transitioning to NCAA, they are not eligible for NCAA post season play until 2014 or something like that. Sounds like they're being smart by getting a jump on the hockey program so by the time they can play in the post season they can make an impact. And they’ll have some Jr./Sr. leadership with NCAA experience while building recruiting over the next few seasons.

It says they beat Augsburg 1-0 and 4-0. Augsburg got beat by Gustavus 6-0 and 8-1...

Augsburg finished its season 3-19-1.

Lindenwood games were exhibitions for D-III Augsburg. According to Augsburg website recaps, both games were close. Lindenwood outshot Augsburg by 57-53 for the weekend. So that's how good they were last year, about as good as one of the least accomplished D-III teams.

That was then.

What rule are you referring to ?. Did/does that rule apply to Syracuse as well.? SU is in it's third year of Operation, and while they have yet to come close to a final eight bid, they have played post season tournament games in the CHA since their inception into the NCAA.

Checked it out myself. One player from the SU club team ended up on the D1 roster in their inaugural year three seasons ago.

Since syracuse was already an NCAA DI school, that rule didn't apply to them. Lindenwood is transferring their entire athletic program from NAIA to NCAA. That's a whole different issue than an NCAA school starting a program in the division that their whole program already belongs to. The same will apply to Penn State (no wait).

That's about right, the best ACHA DI men's and women's teams (Lindenwood included and a handful of other NAIA schools) are about on par with low to mid DIII teams. But if you were coaching or recruiting and wanted to be a good ACHA DI team, the level of a low DIII team is all you need or you'd be beating everyone by 20+ goals like that NMU score and other established programs that take ACHA more seriously than NMU probably wouldn't like that.

Because they're essentially an NAIA varsity program they'll have it a bit easier then start up teams. They have a history of winning and recruiting bases in Western Canada. They'll probably have more than just 1 player from this season's team on the NCAA team but there will still be major changes to recruiting and the roster.

I checked their website and the schedule of games they played last year. Looks like they will have no problem competing at DI level as last season they had victories over Penn State, Ohio State, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Also pretty much the whole state of Michigan: UofMichigan, Michigan State, Northern Michigan, Western Michigan with Grand Valley thrown in for good measure.

I've seen them play, good team and hopefully the other school attitudes won't be like rinkrat. Will never grow the women's game with that attitude. Most of those teams you mention that they beat are club teams. Some honestly horrible. a 19U AA club could beat them and has.

Re: Lindenwood University (St. Charles, MO) moves to NCAA starting in 2011

Will they be playing against actual D1 teams next season. Not just against teams like Sacred Heart and Holy Cross. Are they going to do what Syracuse did except for joining a conference. What teams will they actually play.

Re: Lindenwood University (St. Charles, MO) moves to NCAA starting in 2011

I believe they have played several games against MIAC D3 teams over the past few years. If I remember right the MIAC teams generally beat them

A program like Syracuse had a couple of things going for it. They compete in major conference in other sports; so they have friendly relationshipships with other athletic departments. Lindenwood doesn't have these same connections in place. Syracuse was also helped by the hiring of Paul Flanagan, who had developed a favorable reputation at St. Lawrence. The rate at which a program like Lindenwood can get off the ground may be determined to a large extent by the budget available to its program and the hires made for their athletic director and coach.

Doesn't really matter how they compare now. The baby gets thrown out with the bath water when teams move from the club level to NCAA varsity and it will be a whole new roster, top to bottom. (assuming the move has been in the works and the coach has been able to recruit accordingly.)

The biggest thing Syracuse has/had going for it, is LOCATION! It's in West-Central New York with plenty of opponents within a few hour's drive. LU is the first and only women's college ice hockey team in Missouri (at any level: ACHA/NAIA, NCAA). There's some recruiting benefits, good school, in a major market, warm (esp. compared to Western Canada and MN), and for the midwest there's a quite a large popluation of Canadian students at Lindenwood from the hockey teams, lacrosse teams, and on some other sports as well.

Another note on LU's location: I also think they're taking a proactive step. Everyone is talking about how Penn State and the Big10 will impact the men's side but I believe that women's hockey will be impacted on a delayed timeline. Big10 men's hockey indicates a matter of time before LU's conference rivals in the CCWHA Michigan and Michigan State leave club hockey for ACHA hockey. Not part of the Big10 but Grand Valley could very well add NCAA hky as well in the future.

Re: Lindenwood University (St. Charles, MO) moves to NCAA starting in 2011

I was a goalie on Ohio State's women's club team. I first played Lindenwood in January 2008. We lost 10-0 and 12-0 that weekend. In November 2008, we only lost 3-1 and 4-1. I remember facing over 40 shots every game we played them. Lindenwood was always bigger, faster, and stronger than the majority of the club teams they played. The only teams I remember that could hang with them during my playing years were Robert Morris, Rhode Island, and Michigan State. Everyone else at the club level, they obliterated most of the time. I think this is a good move for Lindenwood and the ACHA.

"Coaches hitting the recruiting trails this week... Head Coach Vince O'Mara is up in Rochester, Michigan for the Tier I USA Hockey National Championships and Assistant Coach Katie Kells is up in North York, Ontario for the Ontario Provincial Championships...."

UBC joining NCAA ???

UBC joining NCAA ???

Link below provides very a interesting read. There has been a move afoot in the last five years by some CIS schools, specially those out west in Vancouver and Victoria to join the NCAA. CIS is digging in their heals, and scared off the likes of McGill to do the same.

SFU and UBC already compete in the NAIA. SFU is just about to join the NCAA ranks and UBC is looking to do the same. UBC has a Hockey program, and it is mentioned in this document. Interesting read with several comments about the NCAA Div 1 expansion.

According to a recent feed from Lindenwood's Facebook page, the Lions have games scheduled against Wisconsin, North Dakota and Mercyhurst.

Any word on how their recruiting is coming along? They are going to need more than their club team players to keep it within 10 goals against any of these three teams.
