Lindenwood University Lions 2011-12

Re: Lindenwood University Lions 2011-12

So doe thios essentially mean the Mercyhurst will have gaurenteed NCAA berth? Six teams gains them an Auto-bid correct. Not sure that will be good for NCAA Hockey with Mercyhurst looking at a few lean years in the furtre. Perhaps they should require a team to win its conference title and finich the season at tleast in the top 10.

How did you get to Six ?. Is Penn also joining ?.

I doubt that MC will have that lean a year any time soon. They were an NCAA team in the pre-Agosta days when their talent level was less than it will be this year. They were more of a blue-collar, hard-working team that played D first, and I think they got away from their roots to some extent when the goals came too easy. They underachieved a bit last year, so it wouldn't surprise me if teams like MC and UMD do better than people are expecting this coming season.

The more important point is that the NCAA will be giving a Tournament spot to the winner of a pretty watered down conference, my point is that Hurst may have a year where they wouldn't qualify on their own yet they should continue to be the top dog in the CHA. I think it means we are likely to see more scenarios like last year unfortunately.

The bigger problem is if a team like MC isn't that strong but looks good enough in the NCAA criteria to finish about sixth, while another team wins the CHA tourney. Then the CHA could have two teams, while teams in a loaded conference would knock each other off all season and be squeezed out of the PWR. As for the NCAA tourney bracket, barring a rich, hockey-loving benefactor, we'll likely see a trend toward more regional, rather than national, first rounds.

Re: Lindenwood University Lions 2011-12

Who will score LU's first goal of the season? And what game will it happen in?

Re: Lindenwood University Lions 2011-12

I am going to say Wickenheiser based on scoring opportunites thus far. And way out on a limb... tomorrow night.

Minnesota State only had one shutout last season, so that trend would seem to indicate that they'll allow a goal sometime within a 120-minute stretch.

Re: Lindenwood University Lions 2011-12

Funny. Great as Wisconsin is, 14 shots still found the net. Quite a clinic to kick off the Lindenwood fledgling program. Slightly different team in Minnesota State so maybe a first goal.

Unfortunately those 14 shots were a total over 2 games. Good luck to them at least they aren't afraid to measure themselves against the better teams.

Re: Lindenwood University Lions 2011-12

4-3 loss for Lindenwood on goals from Kendra Broad (first goal), Talbot and Wickenheiser.

Re: Lindenwood University Lions 2011-12

10-2 loss to Minnesota State with goals from Wickenheiser (2) and Moore (1).

Re: Lindenwood University Lions 2011-12

CHA makes its official site visit to Lindenwood this weekend; Lindenwood vs. Mercyhurst. With the automatic bid that a 6th team would provide, is there any chance they will not be admitted?

The CHA really wants to get to more than four teams, but Linenwood is not ready. I think they should not be allowed in simply because they are not good enough. Same goes for Penn State... not good enough. CHA should stay with four teams.

Just about every team joining a division I conference as a recent start up is most likely going to get beat up for a few seasons. I just think after a couple seasons as an independent...might as well jump in and get started. Should help the program advance if the staff is getting the job done. I would expect two years as an independent though.

Mixed schedule of D-III and DI opponents. I wouldn't load up on top 10 D-I teams.

Yes, I agree brooky, at least two years as an independent. My concern is that the CHA rushes things and get penn and lindenwood in too soon.

Well, if they accept Lindenwood and go apples for apples, they are actually ahead of Penn State because they're playing a good number of D1 schools this year whereas Penn State is playing mostly D3 and still competing at the ache club level. And Penn State is already admitted to the CHA for next season.

What bothers me more about Lindenwood in the CHA is geographically I just don't see how Lindenwood fits into the footprint. The closest school is 11-12 hour bus drive to RMU. Add another hour to Erie, another 1.5 to Niagara and 3 to Syracuse making that a 15-16 hour trip, and Penn St is 3 hours from Pittsburgh so that's a 14-15 hour trip. Those are some long bus rides for players and I am guessing they would have to leave early Thurs morning, missing 2 full days of school every travel league weekend. And would these other schools protest about having to travel that far?

So, it comes down to how badly the CHA wants that 6th team. My guess is Lindenwood will be accepted. They have some good players he brought in, heavily loaded with freshmen as their leaders so I do think they will steadily improve. They have some players that carried over from their club team, which I suspect Penn State will have quite a few as well.

Also, Syracuse was a start-up program when they joined the league and RMU has had a few down years -- the new coach so far seems to have turned that around so far.
