Let's Do This Right -- List YOUR Team's Freshman

Re: Let's Do This Right -- List YOUR Team's Freshman

Niagara released this notice:

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara men’s hockey team and head coach Dave Burkholder have announced seven new additions to the Purple Eagle family as the class of 2016. Joining the Purple Eagles as freshmen for the 2012-13 season will be Dan Kolenda, Hugo Turcotte, Matt Dineen, TJ Sarcona, Matt Chiarantano, Mike Conderman and Nick Cecere.

“As a staff we are all really pleased with the seven student-athletes that have chosen Niagara University and our program as their college of choice,” Burkholder said. “My staff is very diligent and hardworking in this area and these players will all be impact players on the ice thanks to their recruiting efforts.”

Dan Kolenda, a sizeable winger at 6-foot-4 from Superior, Wisc., scored 30 goals, 65 assists and 95 points in 111 games with the Carleton Place Canadians (CCHL). After tallying 20 goals and 37 assists last season, Kolenda was named to the 2011 Robinson Division’s CCHL All-Star team.

“At 6-foot-4, 230 lbs, Dan brings size and skill to our program,” assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Tim Madsen said. “With Dan’s big frame and skill level, he will have the ability to wear down other teams’ defenseman.”

Hugo Turcotte comes to Monteagle Ridge after spending the last year with the Grande Prairie Storm (AJHL). He scored a team-high 23 goals, including four game-winning tallies and nine power-play goals and added 33 assists in 58 games. Turcotte, a native of Laval, Quebec City, had played a year of junior A with the Foxboro South Shore Kings (EJHL) in 2010-11 where he had 52 points (21 goals, 31 assists) in 45 games. He also played a year at Winchendon Prep in Massachusetts in 2009-10 where he accumulated 27 goals and 26 assists and was the team’s scoring leader and Most Valuable Player.

“Hugo brings speed, skill and playmaking ability to our program,” Madsen said. “He has been a proven point producer at every level he has played at, and we fully expect that to translate to his college hockey career at Niagara.”

Matt Dineen has the potential to be a rock on the blueline for the Purple Eagles, having spent the last four seasons with the Newmarket Hurricanes (OJHL). The 6-foot-1 captain steadily improved his point total each season, recording 14 goals, 59 assists for 73 points in his four-year stint with the Hurricanes. His 25 points in the 2011 season was tied for second best among defensemen on the club. The Newmarket, Ont. native has been a leader on and off the ice for the team as he was awarded the OJHL Humanitarian of the Year Award which is given to the player who has made the most notable contribution to his community, including, but not limited to charitable work, school visits and extra-curricular off-ice activities.

“Matt is a very simple, smart defenseman that plays with an edge,” Madsen said. “His competitiveness and ability to defend will make him a valuable penalty killer. Matt also brings tremendous character to our program as he was the recipient of his junior league’s Humanitarian of the Year Award last season for his efforts to give back to the community.”

T.J. Sarcona could play a pivotal role on the Purple Eagles special teams. Playing with the Amarillo Bulls (NAHL) the past two years, Sarcona scored 23 goals and added 35 assists for 58 points in 56 games this past season. The West Islip, N.Y. native collected four power play goals and added three more shorthanded. He was plus-36 and totaled 155 shots, helping the Bulls to the 2011 NAHL South Division Title.

“TJ is a very competitive, two-way forward who comes to Niagara after a very successful junior career,” Madsen said. “He is hard to play against and will help our penalty kill unit immensely.”

Matt Chiarantano, the 5-foot-9 defender has scored 18 goals, 80 assists and 98 points in 182 games in the OJHL, split between the Orangeville Crushers, Aurora Tigers and the Georgetown Raiders. He had a career-season in 2011-12 with the Raiders, scoring six goals, 27 assists and 33 points in 43 games. The Bolton, Ont. native was also a member of Canada East’s squad that participated in the World Junior A Challenge in 2010.

“Matt is a smooth, puck-moving defenseman,” Madsen said. “He is junior tested and will bring depth to our defensive core.”

The Purple Eagles have also added two strong transfers this season in Mike Conerman and Nick Cecere.

Rochester, N.Y. native, Mike Conderman, hopes to bring his tenacious offensive play to Dwyer Arena after having spending last year with the University of Massachusetts-Lowell River Hawks. Prior to his stint with the River Hawks, Conderman suited up for 57 games with the Muskegon Lumberjacks (USHL) where he scored 11 goals, 21 assists for 32 points. He tallied 31 goals and added 41 assists for 72 points in 31 games for Cushing Academy in Massachusetts. His efforts landed him on the All-New England Team as an East Team all-star.

“Mike is a competitive, two-way forward who can play in all situations,” Madsen said. “He has the ability to make plays and creates chances for himself and his line-mates through his hard work.”

Nick Cecere, a defenseman from Des Moines, Iowa, played for the Michigan Tech Huskies last season. Cecere played the 2009-10 season with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs (BCHL) where he scored two goals, added assists and picked up 39 penalty minutes before joining the United States Hockey League’s Lincoln Stars the following season.

“Nick is a simple, stay-at-home defenseman that brings experience and character to our program,” Madsen said. “He also brings an element of size and toughness to our defensive core.”

Re: Let's Do This Right -- List YOUR Team's Freshman

http://thebostoncollegehockeyblog.blogspot.com/ has released these comments about BC's recruits:

Forwards:

Frank Vatrano- Many consider the 5'10 forward out of Springfield, MA to be the best forward in this class. Vatrano recorded thirty five points for the US National Development program team last season including an assist in the teams 3-3 tie at Boston University. Vatrano played first line left wing for the team most of last year and is noted for having an NHL type shot and is also tough to knock off the puck. This season, Vatrano will need to get a little bit faster to get accustomed to the guys that he will be playing with/against in Hockey East. If he can do that, he will easily be a top three line guy for the Eagles.

Peter McMullen- The 6'2 forward who played last season for the Vernon Vipers recorded just three goals and four assist last season for the Vipers. McMullen played wing at the start of his high school hockey career for the Delbarton School (NJ) but became a center last year for the Vipers. The problem last year with McMullen is that he only played 22 games for the Vipers (Due to injury I think). While at Delbarton two seasons ago, McMullen recorded a team high forty six points including the game winning OT goal to give his school the state championship. Like Vatrano, McMullen does not have a ton of speed but he can use his body to fight off defenders and can use his big shot to put the puck in the net. I am not sure if I think McMullen will start on opening night or not for the Eagles. I could see him going back to right wing and playing with Mike Sit and maybe a Pat Brown on the fourth line but we will see once hockey starts.

Brendan Silk- The 6'2 forward out of Wakefield, MA is coming off a year for the USNDT in which he played first line right wing (along with Vatrano). Silk didn't have a boatload of points last year but he did have a goal in the teams loss to Maine in November among other ones. Like Peter McMullen, I am not sure if Silk will start when the year kicks off. He, McMullen, or even both guys could be a part of the fourth line next year if they continue to improve their skating and get adjusted to the college game but only time will tell if they do indeed start for the Eagles.

Defense:

Mike Matheson- The 6'1 defenseman out of Point-Clare, Quebec, is one of the more highly touted defensive recruits in recent memory as he was drafted in the first round of the NHL Draft by the Florida Panthers. While playing for the Dubuque Fighting Saints last season, Matheson recorded eleven goals and 16 assist for the Saints which was tops for defenseman on the team. Matheson's strengths are that he is a highly skilled "offensive" defenseman with great speed and nifty puck moving ability in the offensive zone. I think Matheson could really help out on the power play with offensive skill and smart play making. One aspect of his game that must improve this season is his play in his own end. With a small frame at 6'1, Matheson must get stronger as the year goes on to get ready for the big, powerful, forwards that he will face this season.

Colin Sullivan- A former Yale commit, Sullivan is a 6'2 defenseman out of Milford, CT. Last season, Sullivan recorded 17 points for the Avon Old Farms school and was also named to the NESPAC all league team by his fellow coaches. Like Matheson, Sullivan is a strong skater with good balance and is also is good physical condtion according to reports. When he gets to The Heights and starts his career here at BC, he must get quickly adjusted to the speed of the forwards that he will face. It takes a while for every freshman to get adjusted to the speed of the college game but if Sullivan can do it quickly, he could be a good player during his time at BC.

Teddy Doherty- A 5'11 defenseman out of the Dubuque Saints and hockey power Shattuck St Marys (MN), Doherty is another guy that will probably start on opening night for the Eagles. Doherty recorded 16 points last season for the Fighting Saints but had nine of those points on the power play. I think that it will take Doherty a little bit longer to adjust to the college game but with more playing time and some coaching, he could turn out to be a solid defenseman. At 5'11, he is a little undersized so I would expect that he needs some polishing in his own end.

Travis Jeke- A 6'4 defenseman out of the Northwood School (NY), Jeke is a towering walk-on defenseman that may not start at the beginning of the season for the Eagles, but has a chance to crack the lineup as the year goes on. Jeke recorded 27 points (including 16 goals) for the Detroit Little Caesars two season before attending the Northwood School where he had 31 points for the Huskies. If he can improve in a few areas as the season goes on, I think he could play a few games for the Eagles this season.

What no 5'6" speedsters this year?;)

Nope, but just wait for next years recruiting class. Enough talent and speedsters to make you drool.

And will pale in comparison to Minnesota's. Being completely serious here. No recruiting class will match Minnesota's next year. Might end up being the Gopher's best since the late 70's.

I can only guess this invoked a dikkhead remark that would make Hobart Higgins (not sure you will know who that is) blush.

Nope. Just sharing thoughts on recruiting classes. Not at all meant to slight BC's class next year, which looks to be stellar. But Gopher fans won't\shouldn't be envying any other team's recruiting class next year.

My opinion, of course.

From the AIC website

Gandara, a 5-11, 185-pound forward, scored 21 goals with 31 assists fir 52 points while skating for the Chicago Hitmen of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) last season. He finished tied for the team-lead in scoring, led the team in assists and was second in goals.

Henderson a six-foot, 175-pound defenseman, was a member of the Eastern Junior Hockey League's (EJHL) South Shore Kings each of the last two seasons. He scored scoring three goals with 14 assists for 17 points in 45 games last season after three goals with five assists for eight points in 37 games in 2010-11.

Lubin, a six-foot, 185-pound defenseman, played in 58 games as a member of the NAHL's Amarillo Bulls, scoring five goals with 13 assists for 18 points during the regular season before adding three assists in 11 playoff games. I agree Dubbers, with Kloos, Cammarata, Fasching, Guertler, Lettieri, Bischoff and Brodzinski coming in this will be a great Gopher class.

Re: Let's Do This Right -- List YOUR Team's Freshman

SCSU's Freshmen

Forwards

David Morley
A medical redshirt last season, Morley was a top producer for Victoria of the BCHL two seasons before finishing first on his team in points and ninth overall in league points. Morley has been working out and practicing with the team for the past year as he works to overcome concussion symptoms. Morley is from Richmond Hills, British Columbia.

Joey Benik
Benik led the record setting RBC Cup Champion Penticton Vees in scoring last season, good for second place in total league points. Joey will come in with high expectations to produce immediately, but all indications are that he’ll be up to the task. Benik is from Andover, Minnesota.

Jimmy Murray
Yet another team leading scorer, Murray has displayed remarkable growth over the past two seasons transitioning from a USHL cut, to the NAHL, to a USHL leader with Omaha. Like Benik, Murray is not tall but is incredible strong for his stature. He’ll add creative playmaking abilities to the Huskies skill set, evidenced by his 49 USHL assists, which was good for second in the league. Murray is from Darien, Illinois.

Kalle Kossila
Again, another team leading scorer, Kalle can also claim the highest PPG average from Finland’s SM-Liiga. SCSU has attempted to bring in top Finnish players in the past and develop them in the USHL only to see them struggle and head back to Europe. Kossila’s junior numbesr speak to his potential, but it’s a total mystery as to the ultimate impact he’ll have for the Huskies. Kossila was born in France but raised in Helsinki, Finland.

Jonny Brodzinski
Son of D2 era great Mike Brodzinski and brother to Minnesota Gopher recruit Michael Brodzinski, Jonny will attempt to represent his family proudly after a one-year stint with Fargo in the USHL. Known as a shooter and a goal scorer, Brodzinski will fight to earn his playing time the first season, hopefully developing into a solid contributor over the course of his collegiate career. Brodzinski is from Ham Lake, Minnesota.

Defense

Ethan Prow
Prow is a local recruit proudly representing central Minnesota’s D1 hockey program. Prow has represented the USA as part of the World Junior A Challenge and was a solid, dependable contributor for Des Moines of the USHL the past two seasons. Ethan led Des Moines in defensive scoring last season. He’ll fight for a spot on the second or third pairing, as the Huskies have a solid top two that will eat up about 50% of defensive icetime. Prow is from Sauk Rapids, Minnesota.

Goaltending

Joseph Phillippi
Phillippi is a redshirt freshman who spent the season last year practicing and working out with the team. He occasionally dressed for games as an emergency backup for Ryan Faragher, but he’ll start the season as a backup and likely see some playing time after the departure of Mike Lee to the NHL. Three years ago, Phillippi was named the winner of Minnesota high schools’ award for top senior goaltender, named for SCSU legend Frank Brimsek. Phillippi is from Shoreview, Minnesota.

Rasmus Reijola
Another Finnish experiment, Rasmus had underwhelming stats in the premier Finnish junior league. Some have speculated that Reijola will compete with Phillippi for the primary backup role, but whether that’s true or not, there’s no doubt that sophomore Ryan Faragher will get the bulk of the time in net.
