January 21st Poll Speculations

Re: January 21st Poll Speculations

I was trying to find any data that might substantiate the results in this poll.
The USCHO poll has inherent flaws that aren't as prevalent in the D3hockey poll.

Nevertheless, the discussions that these polls generate seem to attract wider interest than most threads on this forum.
I am intrigued with what you mean by "inherent flaws." Can you elaborate?

Re: January 21st Poll Speculations

As a wise man once said about DI transfers to DIII "There's a reason why. Either they're not good enough or they're more trouble than they're worth.....or both". That said, Plattsburgh has done OK with DI transfers in recent years. Our current goalie, Paul Kelly (BC), CJ Tozzo (NIagra) were good players for us. Others who came in, not so much.

Woudn't it be fun see submissions/rankings that are being used and who they belong to ?
Imagine the discussions.....

What do you think we'd see ? I suggest you'd see the "inherent flaws" that I refer to.

I think Josh Carey, Webb and maybe Russell were the only pollsters to put their polls out there.

Re: January 21st Poll Speculations

Utica's points (by vote rankings) increased by 27%. Oswego's dropped.

Checking the voting points this week vs last week:

Top 6:
Utica +39
Bowdoin +26
Mass - Boston +19
Neumann +18
Wisconsin - EC +12
MSOE +12

Bottom 6:
Wisoconin - RF -11
St Norbert -12
Williams -14
Manhattanville -21
Wisconsin - Superior -29
Hobart -42

The voters put a lot of value on that Utica win/ Hobart loss.

That's fantastic, it really is. But what did that do for Utica. Nothing.

What will it do for Utica this weekend if we split our home games with Manhattanville and Neumann? Nothing.

Just sayin'

Relax Pio...Utica is going to be in good shape come the first NCAA rankings...the ones that actual matter...should they keep up this success.

...and what would it have done for Utica if they moved up in the poll?

Nothing...

Just sayin'

My point, and what I assume Jerry's point was originally is that that the voters are moving them up. It didn't end up changing Utica's standing in the aggregate poll, but their ranking improved on average 2 places per voter. Like others have said though, in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't mean squat!

It probably boils down to who have they LOST to, not who have they beat

Re: January 21st Poll Speculations

I'm ticked off too, I mean, come on, Elmira has received not a single vote all season, come on, it must be a conspiracy.:D
Oh, wait a minute, Duh!! It's all RIT's fault.

Thank you........it is about fricking time someone said that! :p

That was my point. I just felt explaining it further would be wasted effort to those conspiracy theorists....

I do see that the total points have increased, but how is it that if, on average, each voter moved UC up 2 places, that the end placement remains the same? Just the breaks of the numbers (that is, last week 8 was a generous ranking and this week 8 might not be generous at all)? You understand how one can be a bit baffled by that, right?

Somehow this seems it might be tied to the new payroll witholdings.....Yes, you are making 2% more money with your 2013 new year's raise, but you net stays the same, and you should count your self lucky that it did not go down as it did for many folks.

Adrian and Utica are only 3 points apart, so just two switches and those positions are reversed. Of course, that one voter who left Utica off the ballet because of your posting really messes things up! :p

You are exactly right. It is counter-intuitive for sure, but if you think about it, the poll rankings are just a list of best to worst of average ranking by the voters. If you break down the voting points here is a breakdown of the average ranking from last week to this week:

1.Norwich 2.05-->1.55
2.St. Norbert 1.65-->2.25
3.Bowdoin 4.20-->3.00
4.Oswego 4.90-->5.05
5.Hobart 2.80-->5.40
6.Wisc - EC 6.3-->5.70
7.Adrian 7.25-->6.75
8.Utica 8.85-->6.90
9.Plattsburgh 9.05-->9.40
10.Amherst 9.80-->10.20
11.M'ville 11.50-->12.55
12.Williams 12.75-->13.45
13.Mass-Boston 14.85-->13.90
14.Babson 14.10-->13.95
15.MSOE 15.15-->14.40
15.Neumann 15.30-->14.40

As you can see, Utica actually has an average ranking of 6.9 (up from 8.85 last week) but there are/were 7 teams with a better average ranking both weeks. Very rarely does it work out that a teams average ranking is also their actual ranking like it did with Bowdoin this week.

You will have to excuse the in depth analysis on such a (NCAA wise) meaningless poll, I'm a bit of a poll geek.
