January 14th Poll Speculations

Re: January 14th Poll Speculations

Keep talking like that, mister, and you're not getting a pony, either.

All I'm saying is that the NCAA likely isn't expanding our limits anytime soon.

Yep. And even if the NCAA were cool with it, the ruckus from the NESCAC would likely torpedo any attempt. They only play 24 games as it is.

How is Neumann not ranked in these coaches polls? They're losses are to Elmira (a split in Elmira at the start of the season), a split with Utica and they got swept in Hobart in two 1 goal games (no real shame there). If they finish strong the rest of the season and make it to the ECAC W finals again this season they should be given tourny consideration.

Re: January 14th Poll Speculations

You're right. Utica was beat by Castleton in the 1st round.

So for the past two seasons Plattsburgh has not played a team from the ECAC-W. I get the challenges of working teams into their schedule...but that still seems bizarre to me.

Re: January 14th Poll Speculations

When I said last two seasons I was referencing this season (2012-2013) and last season (2011-2012). I'm not laying blame or saying anyone is doing anything wrong or "ducking" anyone....just seems odd.

The blame belongs to RIT!!!

It's a travel issue, plain and simple. Plattsburgh doesn't want any reciprocating agreements in place with the ECAC-W when their are a bunch of nearer viable opponents in the ECAC-E/NESCAC. This is why Elmira got the boot in favor of Castleton, for example.

Perhaps Utica should have beaten Castleton at the Cardinal Classic last year, then Plattsburgh would have had a team from the W on their regular season schedule last season. ;)

They will have to finish VERY strong. The ECAC West will likely only get one team in and at the very most two. There is no automatic berth to the ECAC West Tournament champion.

Hobart and Utica both look good on paper right now but they still have a lot of tough games left. It's possible both of them could finish with 5 or 6 losses or more.

With one of the at-large bids almost certainly going to the West (either SNC or Eau Claire, barring a real tank job) that only leaves two Pool C bids. If an Oswego or Norwich were to lose in their conference tournament, one of them would likely get into the NCAA's as well.

Once again, this is all barring absolutely tank jobs by some teams down the stretch. A lot of hockey left to be played but in the grand scheme of things, two teams like Curry, Western New England, UMass-Dartmouth, Plymouth State, Wentworth etc. are getting into the tournament with their AQ while multiple teams like Plattsburgh, Amherst, Bowdoin, Babson, Norwich, Oswego, St. Norbert, Eau Claire will be left home.

Re: January 14th Poll Speculations

Plattsburgh averages a round trip of 550 miles (per conference road trip). The most an ECAC W team is around 510 with Neumann and 480 with Manhatanville (using the home rink).

The closest West school to Plattsburgh is Utica at 380 miles and Hobart at 575. The rest are all 600+. Plattsburgh can't afford to travel 600 miles for 1 game when they can travel half of that? You're dealing with a school who needs to cut spending every possible way.

While doing numbers
Morrisville SUNYAC 285
Morrisville ECAC-W 263

Canton ECAC-W 486
Canton SUNYAC (With OSU as Travel Partner and Morr/Cortland) 453
Canton SUNYAC (With OSU as T/P and Morrisville OUT) 446

Re: January 14th Poll Speculations

Will ECAC-W have an auto bid in the next year or two now they are back to 6 teams?
Next year, with the WIAC becoming it's own (sub 7 team) conference, Pool B is back in play. It will be between the ECAC-W and WIAC as to who gets the Pool B bid. It does not have to be the tournament champion, either.

Pool C will be reduced to 2 teams.

Prez - I think the same applies (as of 2:14 PM ET on 1/16/13) to Bowdoin. Right now, they look like a very strong candidate (> Oswego) for Pool C if they don't get the AQ.

Edit: BTW, 2 months to the championship final @ LP!!
