It's Time for College Hockey to Leave the NCAA

Re: It's Time for College Hockey to Leave the NCAA

You sure its not Miami of Ohio?? I could have sworn I saw it on wikipedia that way.

Now I finally know why Wikipedia isn't a legitimate source for academic papers!

(I'm totally in a hockey picture on Miami's wiki page /flex)

"could of" It's "Could have" you freakin ijit!

true. I think people are thinking phonetically (sp?) "could've" so they chop off the "h" when they say it. IF THEY ACTUALLY WRITE OUT "could of" I'd say *** are you talking about? ;)

That, of course, is where it starts, but I have read people posting it that way!:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Re: It's Time for College Hockey to Leave the NCAA

From Miami's 2010-11 Media Guide:

Miami University, Please
When referring to Miami, please use Miami University, Miami University (Ohio) or Miami (Ohio). Please do not use Miami of Ohio, University of Miami of Ohio, etc. The latter are not the proper names for our institution. Also in 1997, the University began using its new nickname, the RedHawks. It is one word with a capital H. Thank you.

Only socialist wimps refer to themself as a "Redhawk". A true and proud alumnus will always and proudly refer to themselves as a "REDSKIN". At least that's so for those of us from the older generations who weren't brainwashed.

So ...dried up old bigoted farts long past their significance then?
The ignorance is on your end as you've quite well proven my point. I know MANY distinguished and very successful Miami graduates and I'm simply repeating their often expressed feelings here. Only the young and ignorant express themselves as you have. More than a few Miami alums still wear their Redskin apparel at the games. Have you got the guts to go up and say to them what you've said here? I'd bet not. Brave on the web, coward in real life.

There is no way around it, "redskin" is a racist pejorative. The banning of all American Indian names was knee-jerk stupid, but "redskin" is indefensible. And I'm probably older than you.

You clearly have zero clue about who I am to assume such a thing. I promise you .. had I been standing in a room next to you and you said those words; my retort wouldn't have been as pleasant. I have a long standing internet history in regard to this subject and college hockey.

Apparently you're an old idiot at grammar and syntax too. "Themself" disappeared from the English language about 500 years ago. Try "alumni" for pronoun agreement next time you attempt to describe your cast of pugnacious Q-tips.:D

He's an OSU poster/I would hope grad

The only time I've seen him comment on Miami is regarding the Redskin/RedHawk issue, which is something many older alumni feel very strongly about. So, his point about knowing many Miami grads who still champion that cause is accurate.

That's great, now maybe he could learn English.

Interesting. So as a "rival", he's keen on finding more ways to bash the other fans? nice.

So I should be referring to them as the "Dartmouth of New Hampshire Indians"? Got it.

Re: It's Time for College Hockey to Leave the NCAA

I'm not a marketing person, yet I completely understand the difference between a parenthetical added for clarity and a bastardization of a school's name.

They don't teach you that at Dartmouth of New Hampshire? Really? What do you mean that's not the school's name? I grew up on the NH-Mass border and always added that for clarity, since people never knew if you were referring to Dartmouth of New Hampshire or UMass-Dartmouth. Weird that it would bother people if that caught on.

We get annoyed at people who say Dartmouth University, since that's simply incorrect. Beyond that, if you want to say Dartmouth of New Hampshire, be my guest. A lot of people will look at you like you're an idiot, but that's up to you.

note: I never said I would say Miami of Ohio, I merely found it fairly pedantic that Miami (Ohio) is deemed acceptable while the former was not, when neither is really the name of the school. It'd be like me saying Dartmouth (NH) is ok, but Dartmouth of New Hampshire is not.

Now why don't you go back to your silly hockey east threads talking about that University of Boston that isn't Harvard or Boston College,

What? So you understand the purpose of the parenthetical, but you don't understand why someone would be annoyed when that parenthetical was appended to the verbalization of their name? Really? Do you want to concede now that you thought you'd get away with a quick snide remark, didn't think anyone would call you on it, and now you're stuck? Do you want real world examples of why your feigned ignorance of the difference won't fly?
