It's Time for College Hockey to Leave the NCAA

Re: It's Time for College Hockey to Leave the NCAA

Wow - and here I thought this thread was going to be a complete train wreck, but you've managed to turn it around into a useful discussion of the incorrect grammar of some popular expressions. Outstanding work, folks!
Agreed, this is wonderful. I may have to change my stance on this one and thank sueinminny for starting this thread.

Re: It's Time for College Hockey to Leave the NCAA

Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

I heard he sang a good song, I heard he had a style
And so I came to see him, to listen for a while
And there he was, this young boy, a stranger to my eyes

A Man goes to a whore house. The Madam is out of women but, since the man is a Sioux fan she thinks she can get away with a blow up doll and he will never know the difference.

The man comes out after being in the room for five minutes. "How was it?", says the Madam. "Not good at all," says the man, "I bit her nipple, she let out this huge fart and then flew out the window!"

Re: It's Time for College Hockey to Leave the NCAA

any others we should knock out?

It's "for all intents and purposes," not "for all intensive purposes." I've yet to have anyone explain what an intensive purpose would be.

also, effect/affect drives me nuts. It's really not that hard. If you're using it as a verb, 99% of the time you want affect ("That fight greatly affected the team"). If you're using it as a noun, then 99% of the time you'll want effect ("That fight had a great effect on the team") unless you're a psychiatrist.

.....and if carrots are so good for your eyes, why do you see so many dead rabbits on the side of the road?

Alot is not a word. However, one can allot a lot.

It is a tough row to hoe. Hoeing a road is **** near impossible.

It is Cracker Jack, not Cracker Jacks. Just like it is popcorn, not popcorns.

It's "for all intents and purposes," not "for all intensive purposes." I've yet to have anyone explain what an intensive purpose would be.

Peruse does not mean to browse. It actually means to read thoroughly or to examine in detail. I suppose that one could say that to peruse is to read with an intensive purpose.

Re: It's Time for College Hockey to Leave the NCAA

"Welp" is not a word. Yes, some people sometimes inexplicably pronounce only the first half of the final sound of "well" when they are exasperated, but that doesn't give you the right to formulate a new word.

"Whelp," however, is a word, but it does not mean "well."

Re: It's Time for College Hockey to Leave the NCAA

I get the general idea of "Blame Canada", but this thread has so many sources of problems.

Blame Canada for the Native American name issue?
Blame Canada for trying to keep British English in North America- more colour?
Blame canada for the college hockey video game?
Blame Canada for the stupid texing shorthand, eh?
Blame Canada of being too nice, which forces USA today to be poorly written.

Just want to focus the brunt of the blame correctly.

You are all still POed that we kicked your butts back in 1812. :p :D

Oh, and it's OFFSIDE, not offsides ;)

excellent addition. I hate it when people misuse or abuse "for all intents and purposes" it's sounds like they're speaking another language altogether!

effect/affect I admit I screw up all the time

Re: It's Time for College Hockey to Leave the NCAA

It grinds my gears when people use the terms "power" and "action" interchangeably when referring to fishing rods.... They aren't the same thing...

Oh wait, this is the English thread... My bad :p

Kicked our butts in 1812? That was mother England I'm afraid. You've only had control of your constitution since 1982 for crying out loud... ;)

"Intensive purposes" is a sort of idiosyncratic non-musical mondegreen very similar to the mystery of morning wood. It's very intense.:D
