Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton
First a few "homer" gripes: Paula Weston completely forgot about ND in her poll pick for this week, yet managed to vote BU in the top 10 even though they have lost to both PC and HC (no offense towards those 2 victors). I know, I know, polls mean squat until the 2nd week of April...
Is it just me, or does anyone else read the CCHA quick team summaries of past weekend games and think ND frequently gets the short end of the kudos stick? Hello? Anders Lee with the hattrick?
And what is with ND's own site not having any video or pics of opening night? While there are pics on ND's facebook page, I would think their own university-run site could manage something.
My posse and I are heading the our first road game of the season this Friday. For the second weekend in a row, ND faces a goalie (Andrew Hammond 4-1-1) with stellar numbers (1.48 GA and .937 save %), and while BG isn't scoring much as a team (2.17 GF), their defense is certainly up to the task (1.67 GA).
ND is managing a powerful 4.2 GF, but they are giving up a scary 3.0 GA. Mike Johnson is 2-1-0 with a GA of 2.33 and a save % of .896. Neither is a number I am comfortable with because that means the offense
has to be super and nearly mistake-free.
BG is a very young team. In fact, 9 of their top 10 scorers are underclassmen. They are led by sophomore Cam Wojtala with 7 points (2 of which are PPG's). Freshmen Ryan Carpenter (their leading G scorer with 3), Dan DeSalvo and Marcus Perrier are next with 6, 5 and 3 points, respectively.
Contrast that with ND's top 10 scorers, only 4 of whom are underclassmen. ND is led by Lee (ND's leading G scorer with 8) and T.J. Tynan, each with 11 points. Riley Sheahan, Billy Maday and Sam Calabrese each have 5 points. Austin Wuthrich and Sean Lorenz each have 4 and Stephen Johns has 3 points.
BG's PP is average at 14.3% while their PK works 86.5% of the time. That puts their special teams' score at 100.8. That works.
ND's PP improved to 18.5% while their PK sits at 81.5%, giving them a special teams' score of 100.
Finally. What I wouldn't give to see that number jump to about 108 this weekend.
Success does not come to you. You must go to it.
