Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

A couple of throwaway sentences in this article caught my attention:

Grant Shaft said:
In addition to the risk of losing affiliation with the Big Sky and potential scheduling and recruitment problems, Shaft said he believes that Notre Dame’s recent decision to affiliate with Hockey East — and not the new National Collegiate Hockey Conference that includes UND — was due in part to UND's being on sanctions because of the ongoing nickname fight.

“To what degree, I don’t know, but I believe it impacted Notre Dame’s decision,” he said.

I'm guessing he is not in any position to know one way or the other and this is simply speculation on his part. I'm doubting it played a part, but then again, was it ever asked by anyone outside of Notre Dame? It matters little now, unless Notre Dame ever eyed Hockey East as some sort of a temporary landing spot, and that has not been the school's MO in the past.

Thanks to Boston Domer at ND Nation (who might post here as well?) for alerting me to this article. I think some of the USCHO ND posters post there as well, but I don't and I'm not sure if all here do.

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

As the 2nd worst week in my life emotionally comes to a close, I find myself grateful for hockey and hockey friends. While I don't think long-time friend Matt or new friend Chuck frequent this site often, I have to thank them (along with Chuck's big bro and Doc dad) for giving me and my posse some much needed laughs.

Kudos also go to the main event players tonight. There were goals by the usual suspects, but it certainly was nice to see that pretty 1st goal by Austin Wuthrich on a nice pass from Richard Ryan. Also sweet was the hard-working Patrick Gaul and his shot from his knees (or was it his backside?) that found the back of the net.

While the Irish needed a 5 X 3 to register a PPG, at least their PK was perfect tonight. Mike Johnson looked shaky to start the game...heck, so did the rest of the team, but once they started to erase the 2-0 deficit, they played their game and wore a physical and hard-working OSU team out. It seemed as if the Buckeyes shot their wad in the first period. They were quite impressive to begin the game, out hustling (especially along the boards) ND. These 2-0 deficits early on have got to go. I would think it would be much easier to play with a lead.

Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted. (Matthew 5:4) Hockey is my comfort.

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

These 2-0 deficits early on have got to go.
Well, that isn't exactly what I had in mind... Spotting a team 2 goals is hard enough to come back from, but four?!

Going only 75% on the PK and 11% on the PP is not the way to get things done either. Especially when the only PPG's you're managing is when you're up 2 guys. Waiting until the 3rd period to connect the dots is also not the way to get it done.

That said, there were some positives I noticed in the game: Riley Sheahan is more of a beast this season than ever before. He was the hardest working player for ND the whole weekend. He earned those 4 points. That can only mean good things as the season moves on. I got the feeling Anders Lee was under the weather the whole weekend as he was not nearly as strong on the puck as he normally is. His presence just was not felt; however, he still managed 5 points on the weekend. T.J. Tynan also registered 5 points in these 2 games. Richard Ryan, Patrick Gaul and Austin Wuthrich (who had 2 goals this weekend) also impressed.

After Mike Johnson came in in relief of Steven Summerhays, I had that deja vu feeling from a few years ago when Jordan Pearce came in for Brad Phillips up in Auburn Hills. That turned out to be a pretty good season, IIRC.

Looking forward to Wednesday night after hearing some of the parents gush over the new digs. Then we can focus on RPI. They'll be out for blood as they've been shut out in 3 of their 4 games thus far.

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

There's something to be said about fighting through adversity, but constant early game deficits are not the recipe for successful hockey.

Transition, freshmen, shooting the puck, the right mix, Jackson touched on all those topics in post game comments and it seems just as clear to me. And all of that has played a part in the 2-0 or 4-0 scores facing the Irish in the last three games. That they're talented enough to overcome deficits is clear, but no team can do it every time it happens.

It looks like the book developing on Notre Dame is that an aggressively deep forecheck will disrupt our transition more often than not. Both UMD and OSU approached the Irish with similar tactics, keeping 3 forwards in our faces even after we gain possession of the puck, and we have been sloppy moving it up the ice. Forcing passes isn't getting the job done. Breakouts and play through the neutral zone need to see some improvement. There are many ways to see that Notre Dame is beating themselves, and the shot opportunities they are missing out on is one. 17 shots total in the first loss, and just 15 shots in the first 43 minutes of the game until Lee tipped home the first goal Saturday on their second 3rd period shot. We began to see some effective transition against that aggressive OSU play, and got them scrambling quite a bit, and then we were able to score 3 goals over just the last 13 shots. Had there been even modest success in moving the puck in the first two periods, I believe that 3rd period effort could have produced a winning result. We saw just that on Friday. Bad first period with just 7 shots, then double that in each of periods 2 and 3, and a win.

The good news is the shortcomings can be coached away. And the positives I've seen on the ice have stemmed from smart play, hard skating, and talent. When you have the upper hand in all three, you'll win most nights.

Maybe the first four games were a bit of an extended exhibition season. Lets just say the real season begins next Friday. It should be the beginning of a wild weekend on campus. Start it out right.

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

Wow nice barn! Can't wait to come up for a game. How many did Joyce seat?

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

I have to say the final piece to the puzzle better be a NC banner. Dump or palace, I want a new trophy and a banner hanging from the rafters.

Tomorrow is the unveiling of said palace for the season ticket holders. Friday is the unveiling of the team. Why unveiling of the team? Because they have to find their identity sometime, right? Now that the future conference is out of the way, everyone is healthy, the JACC is behind them, what more is there to do but play? Consistently.

Really when you think about it, all they have to do is skate harder than the other team, block more shots than the other team and take more shots than the other team. Consistently.

On paper this should happen a majority of the time. Consistently. On paper.

ND is managing 4 GF/game but giving up 3.2 GA/game. Too close for comfort. They are taking 7 penalties/game. Too undisciplined. (although I have to admit, those calls against Riley Sheahan were dog doo) ND's PP is middling at best at 16.7%. That's too low for a team with this much firepower. Any team with Sheahan and Anders Lee on it should have a PP of 20% or better. The PK is more like P. U. 79.2% is embarrassingly low for a Jeff Jackson-coached team.

Now for the good news. ND scores more goals as the game wears on and they give up fewer goals as the game gets later. That's a testament to their conditioning. T.J. Tynan leads the team with 9 points. That ties him for 3rd in the nation in the early goings. Lee (who is 8th in the nation) and Sheahan round out the top 3 with 8 and 4 points, respectively. Mike Johnson likely has solidified himself between the pipes, but still needs to improve his numbers for stellar things to happen. He has a GA of 2.46 and a save % of .900.

As I mentioned in a previous post, RPI will be out for blood for 3 reasons. 1st is being shut out 3 of their 4 games. They want to score. Bad. 2nd is the first game ever to be played in the new home will put them in the annals of ND hockey history. To beat their host would be a nice asterisk. And 3rd is the loss of their top 3 face off guys (one of whom was their top scorer). When I think about how the rest of the team stepped up when captain Erik Condra was injured, I realize anything can happen.

That said, RPI is averaging only 1 GF/game while giving up 2 GA/game. They give up more goals as the game progresses. Their PP is worse than ND's, succeeding only 7.7% of the time. However, their PK is outstanding. They are taking only 5.5 penalties/game and so far they kill at a 95.5% clip. Combine those 2 and you have your requisite 100-and-above special teams score (103.2). ND's score is 95.9.

RPI is currently led by Ryan Haggerty and Joel Malchuk who each have 2 points. Bryce Merriam should be in net for the Engineers and his numbers are stellar. He has a GA of 1.68 and a save % of .944.

Discipline is never an end in itself--only a means to an end.

Mr. JJfP got a sneak-sneak peek at the new digs. {jealous}

This is a view from the students' section:

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

Recently returned from the open house for the new home. Oh. My. God.

Highlights include a gift shop full of hockey goodies. In fact, it was full of only hockey goodies. No football. No basketball. Just hockey stuff.

Views from every seat are super sweet. There is not a clunker in the place. Lots of room to walk. Nice views of the surrounding campus from the second floor.

I was pleasantly surprised at the volume from the crowd when Coach Jackson finished his talk. There likely were not 1000 people there to cheer, yet it was quite loud. I'm looking forward to the volume level when the place is full. I like the imposing dark blue of the ceiling, the gold kick plate around both rinks and some of the decorative touches like the different interlocking ND's used through the years around the rink.

Students are gonna love their seats. The band will be directly under the flags which puts them directly above the students. Sat on the home bench and realized the bench itself sits about 6 inches higher than at the JACC (easier to spring up and over the boards). A few players were on the ice at the end of the evening passing the puck the length of the ice and the puck slid effortlessly all the way down. No bouncing around. No ruts to toss and turn the puck. Even the olympic ice was perfect.

I keep thinking of the line in Saving Private Ryan when Captain Miller is dying and he implores Ryan to "Earn this."

How in the name of Fr. Riehle did he manage that? Hopefully you weren't subsequently bailing him out of jail on trespass charges! :D

Anyhow, I hear tomorrow is supposed to be a pretty big day in the life of the Notre Dame hockey program... :p

I trust everyone is suitably impressed with the CFIA. I know I sure am. The views from every corner of the place are impressive, the balcony, main bowl, O'Brien's the press box, the restrooms... (OK that last one makes me sound creepy, but those who have fought the lines at the Joyce get the enthusiasm). It is difficult to believe the day has finally come when the hockey team has a real home to call home.

There was a lot of fun in the Joyce (or JACC, or ACC) but not a lot of history. The facility was outdated by the time it was 20 years old. The CFIA will probably have a little more staying power. Here's to a successful opening game tomorrow, and a great first season!

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

I also trust everyone got a chance to see the Tribune story on Lefty. Interesting stuff out of Charles, as usual. But I do find it amusing that he thinks the Big Ten is the way to go what with the costs associated with college athletics. Isn't this the same guy who decried the CCHA as a low cost "bus league" back in 1981? Those of us who have no desire to be a part of the B1G need not fear though. His opinion is not shared by many around the place...

Saw it. Had the usual hard time getting by the typical Lesar careless mistakes and oversights. Like the de-emphasis happening in 1987. Wasn't it 4 years earlier and wasn't it actually resulting from those Title IX issues that cost the team a lost year of recruiting even earlier than that, around 1979? Guys who make their living as journalists should not constantly make simple factual errors. If he wrote that Notre Dame's last MNC in football was in 1998 instead of 1988 the howls of protest from the football crowd would be deafening.

The company he works for had to do some minor last minute repair...in the locker room! He took pics of the locker room for me, but was warned by Dave Gilbert that if anyone else saw them, he'd have to kill him! He got to go to the places everyone else did NOT get to tour.

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

Irish are now perfect all-time in the new building. Let's keep that up!

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

Wow. Just wow. The CFIA is everything advertised. I'm still not sure I was actually at a hockey game on the Notre Dame campus. I don't know if I remember my reaction 35 years ago to my first one, but this one was just wow.

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

I'll second that wow. And add that the energy from the players was infectious. Given the nervous energy they must have had, they used it well. Riley Sheahan, Stephen Johns, Patrick Gaul and Austin Wuthrich were the hardest workers out there, but that's like saying Yellowstone is prettier than the Grand Canyon. Of course, Anders Lee chose a nice christening for the new rink with the first hat trick. If this team can duplicate the way they forechecked, backchecked and put pucks on net the rest of the season, I'll be quite happy all the way to Easter morning.

Great crowd. And am I correct in thinking the band grew? Nice. Saw a few blasts from the past. Saw Coach Jackson smile--twice! And...there were green men.

My posse and I kept remarking that this seemed as if we were watching ND in a regionals game, but with a home crowd. The new place will take some getting used to. I won't mind that though at all.

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

I'm a Brown fan who is also a lifelong ND football fan. I'm in South Bend this weekend because I'm going to the football game tomorrow (my first ever, so I'm super excited), and I was able to catch the 3rd period of tonight's game (I flew into Chicago and then spent about 4 hours fighting traffic all the way here, but at least I got to get in to the game for free!).

I just wanted to say that the new arena is absolutely terrific. You guys have a gem. As much as I love rickety old Meehan Auditorium, I'm envious of such a fantastic establishment. I hope ND is able to put a similarly wonderful product on the ice. I'll always cheer, cheer for Old Notre Dame, unless they play Brown. Best wishes to you guys and your new arena!

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

Simply amazing. I agree. I feel like I was watching a pro game in a palace that just so happened to have players with the same names as ND does. The roar after that first goal was insane and is a moment that I will never forget. Besides the concessions being a tad long at the beginning I really didn't see any hitches in the whole performance on the new barn tonight. Its gonna be a little odd for a little bit, and its a shame we have to wait three weeks for our next visit, but its something that I feel I will have no problem enjoying a game in 20 some times a season.

...Oh and the team on the ice was pretty good tonight too. Especially that Anders kid...whoever he is
